Why is it that whenever someone has something rare and doesn't instantly make it available to everyone for free, they're pilloried as greedy hoarders? It'd be a shame if this degenerates into another flame thread, so I think this should be nipped in the bud right now.

I don't think they are holding it back for reasons of profit. If I had to guess, perhaps they and their source are worried about possible legal repercussions from Lucasfilm if they release it. The copyright notice at the end is to LFL. Knowing about how they've repossessed "stolen" film prints, it's probably wiser not to take chances.

I don't think anyone is getting out the torches, we're just trying to figure out why this particular doc is being held so close to the vest.

The other four were readily available as 16mm library prints over the years, and some of these have been openly sold by collectors. Confiscating such prints is no more on Lucasfilm's "to do" list than wiping out every copy of the Holiday Special is.

Why didn't we think of that before? That's GENIUS!

If nothing else, I would try and track down the people who are shown in those credits. It's entirely possible that one of them would have a copy of the special.

What is this "google" he speaks of?

It sounds strange...and dangerous. I must know before I proceed.

You can look it up on Bing. lol

Other than the short sidebar mention in Rinzler's book this will remain forgotten.

But the Blu Ray did not include new transfers of the 4 making of specials that were released and  only 3 were included and from star wars to jedi has since been buried.

If Lucas cannot even bother scanning existing prints, much less the negatives for the other making of specials and restoring them what is the chance of releasing a once only aired in Europe special for TV?

Just to put things into perspective other than the previous unreleased and not restored deleted scenes the blu ray did not include the original versions of the films but also no new scans of the negative for the 2011 special edition, they dumped an existing stuck at 1080P transfer done on antiquated 2004 tech on the blu ray.  This is unacceptable for a billionaire who has the cash for a proper presentation of these films.

At least some of the deleted scenes are now released in a higher resolution than the actual films... oh, the irony. Personally, I can't see why these documentaries are included on that blu-ray set at all other than to lure in old fans into buying something they don't really want. I remember them being very cheesy documentaries mostly explaining the optical effects work, wouldn't it make more sense to have making of documentaries of the digital work that happens to be what's actually on that set.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

The only info I can find is here: "... Jim'll Fix It that showed another kiddie being taken onto the Dagobah set and meeting Mark Hamill & R2D2. We can only vaguely remember this from when it was broadcast and even though the passage of time (or maybe a conscious effort) has erased much of it, the mere mention of this "unique" piece of televisual history still sends a shudder up the spine. Still the most staggeringly awful delivery of the terrible line "Hello R2D2, let's go and see Luke Skywalker..." could have stunned a charging rhino."

It makes for creepy watching now with the Sir Jim's ghost on the cultural naughty step.

DVD Savant linked to it as well yesterday. Funny how this is "going viral" after being up for four years.

Whats the little clip at the end of that second video showing Boba Fett, Luke, and a Bespin guard on a tv show? Presumably part of the same documentary?

Geek Tyrant linked to it as well.

Now, if we could just get the OT preservation as much attention maybe things wouldn't always be some complicated....LOL

Hi all!

Last week I posted some clips that Darth Neo (of StarwarsArchives) had given me a while ago for my updated Miami Film Festival version of Building Empire (which you can see on Vimeo.com).

He contacted me and was up happy that I had done so. But after a bit of chat, we sorted it out and got full credit for him on an article on movies.com. He has since said that he will upload the first 15 minutes of the documentary in better quality if he gets some good support on his Facebook group. I think he just wants to share it with as many people as possible. So make sure you "like" the group next time you're there.

I hope everyone is doing well. Despite not visiting here much recently, I still have a huge affection for this site and what all you guys and girls are doing! Keep up the great work!

P.S - I am continuing to work on Inside Jaws and should be done in a matter of months.

It seems like some of the audio and music segments of this elusive documentary is what also appeared in the BBC documentary Star Wars - Music by John Williams.

Would this version be "complete" or somewhere near "complete?"

This was aired in Canada, perhaps someone up there still has a VHS kicking around.

It includes new material in better quality from the Dutch Broadcast and the clips I released in 2007 all in the correct order. I have added the main and end titles to make a coherent whole. It totals 26 minutes. The whole documentary is 56 minutes.

It's great being able to see more of this.

Do you have any plans to release the entire thing?
