Can anyone who saw episodes 1-3 first please fill out this survey?

Thank you for agreeing to take this survey for my research paper. All of the questions in this survey require more than a yes/no answer; however, it is up to you how in depth you would like to go. If you feel more strongly about a certain question than another, you can certainly spend less time on the question you are less interested in. The longer the answers, the better, so don't feel like you have to shorten anything you are passionate about.
This is a 20 question survey. I'm letting you know beforehand because it is somewhat longer than other surveys; however, you DO NOT have to go into much depth if you do not want to. Simply answering the questions will work if you are pressed for time.
Please note that your name will not appear anywhere in my research paper. Thank you very much for participating in this survey. Also, this survey is specifically for the Star Wars FILMS ONLY. Anyone who has read books, comics, etc: please try not to be biased by other sources than the movies as I am only researching the movie for this particular research paper. Thank you once again!

I agree, the thread title is pretty limiting.  To fit this requirement, you'd mostly be dealing with people born in 1994 or later, meaning... 19 and under.  Oh Good God I'm old.  Thanks a lot.  And I was looking forward to explaining why Lando is my favorite character in a totally non-ironic way.

Sorry. I realize I am limiting my audience. I myself didn't watch them in that order. I originally was asking everyone, but so few people were answering that they watched the prequels first that I did not have enough information on that side. I'd definitely be interested in hearing your answers, though.

1. In one sentence, what is your description of a villain?

The bad guy, who is working against the hero of a story, whose actions are unjustified morally.

2. Do you consider yourself a Star Wars fan? On a scale of 1-10, 1 being not a fan at all and 10 being a “super fan”, what would you consider yourself?

Yes, an 8.5

3. In what order did you first watch the Star Wars films?

A. Episodes 6, 4-5 first, then Episodes 1-3 (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith in that order.)

I will add to this, however, that I was 9 years old when The Phantom Menace came out, still remember being awed and amazed when Yoda first used his lightsaber in AotC, and was only really judgemental of the PT with Revenge of the Sith when I was 15. Either way, I think I probably fit more into your “saw the PT first” category, because in my mind they are all the single “Star Wars” story. Oddly enough though, I still prefer my faces VHS of the OT to my blus J

4. Who is your favorite character from the films?

Anakin

5. Who is your favorite villain from the films?

Palpatine

6. What is the first thing you think of when you think of your favorite villain from the film?

Force lightning

8. If your favorite villain was not Darth Vader, what is the first thing you think of when you think of Darth Vader?

James Earl Jones :P… probably Luke cutting off his hand in Jedi

9. What is Senator Palpatine’s motivation for becoming the Emperor?

Palpatine is motivated by a lust for power. His “sith revenge” reasoning is flimsy at best, even to himself.

10. What is Anakin Skywalker’s motivation for becoming Darth Vader?

Anakin want’s to save Padme’s life and believes the Emperor knows how.

11. Do you feel sympathy for the Emperor?

No I do not.

12. Why or why not?

His character isn’t developed enough to know what kind of person he really is, or how he turned to the dark side.

13. Do you feel sympathy for Darth Vader?

Yes

14. Why or why not?

Honestly, Anakin never should have been told he was the chosen one, or told how amazing of a swordsman he was etc. I think the Jedi fueled his arrogance. It also was stupid that the council never returned to free his mother, instead leaving him with the guilt of ditching his mother as a slave. By setting him up for failure, the council never prepared him for loss, and when he did lose his mother they did not adequately help him mourn (believing you should not mourn). All of these things contributed to his fall to the dark side. I feel this way having seen the films many times. The first time I saw RotS, I just couldn’t believe that he fell that easily, and started killing kids instantly… so I have only grown to sympathize with analysis.

15. When the Emperor died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

Yes!

16. When Darth Vader died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

Sorry for Luke, but triumphant, happy.

17. Do you think the Emperor fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Yes

18. Why or why not?

He had only self serving, immoral reasons for the choices he made.

19. Do you think Darth Vader fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Yes, but only at certain points.

20. Why or why not?

Vader was manipulated into the role that played in the Empire. He did many bad things, and was a villain for many years, since his actions were born out of cold heartlessness. Following ANH, I truly believe that his actions were altered to less of a villain than someone confused and intent upon a goal. His children were the light in the dark he had needed. I think a true villain lacks the complexity to be redeemed. Though murdering younglings still chills my blood and I have a hard time accepting it, despite it’s appearance on the screen, because it is too abrupt and illogical.

He got demoted 'to lame' in the PT.

15. When the Emperor died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

I thought these were 1-3 questions?  Originally I thought... damn, that was cool!  Now I am like... Did Vader just yell "Nooo.."?

16. When Darth Vader died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

I thought these were 1-3 questions?  Before I was like... At least Vader turned out to to be a pretty nice guy.  Now I think of Hayden in that suit, and I feel happy.

17. Do you think the Emperor fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Not the PT version

18. Why or why not?

I could not get past his "Yeah!" he pulled off durring the duel in 3.

Galatians 2: 20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

1. In one sentence, what is your description of a villain?

Ambitious, mendacious but flawed.

2. Do you consider yourself a Star Wars fan? On a scale of 1-10, 1 being not a fan at all and 10 being a “super fan”, what would you consider yourself?

In terms of the series as it currently stands I would say about a five but before 1997 I would put myself at an 8.

3. In what order did you first watch the Star Wars films?A. Episodes 4-6 first, then Episodes 1-3 (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith in that order.) B. Episodes 1-3 first, then Episodes 4-6 (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi in that order.)

 A

4. Who is your favorite character from the films?

R2-D2

5. Who is your favorite villain from the films?

Princess Leia

6. What is the first thing you think of when you think of your favorite villain from the film?

That awful scene where Lando is trying save his friend, after being forced to betray him to save his city and it's people, is cruelly choked by Chewbecca at the bidding of the twisted Princess. He wants to speak but his life is being choked out of him.

7. If your favorite villain was not the Emperor, what is the first thing you think of when you think of the Emperor?

His heart was in the right place and his plans might have worked if it wasn't for his almost comedic flare for the theatrical. I've suffered from this sort of thing in the past and the future myself.

8. If your favorite villain was not Darth Vader, what is the first thing you think of when you think of Darth Vader?

How does he pee?

Does his bits and pieces slide out of the revolving door thing in his codpiece or is that just where they empty his bag/cannister?

9. What is Senator Palpatine’s motivation for becoming the Emperor?

To strengthen the weak and failing chaos of Galactic Government and to sensibly nationalise commerce.

10. What is Anakin Skywalker’s motivation for becoming Darth Vader?

To break through the glass ceiling that the Jedi council have placed over ex-slaves. To change a galactic government that allows slavery in the outer-rim territories in the first place. To learn the means to save his wife and children from the same fate that befell his mother thanks to the Galactic government and the Jedi leadership. He's a nice guy.

11. Do you feel sympathy for the Emperor?

Of course I do.

12. Why or why not?

He almost unifies the galaxy under a strong leadership and almost leaves it with the legacy of an unassailable defense policy. Ultimately he paid the price for trust. Never trust an underling to die on cue, they always get up at the last minute and shoot you or push you into vortex or throw you down an inexplicably not covered pit of death. With me it's usually girls or insects... insect girls frequently.

13. Do you feel sympathy for Darth Vader?

I did.

14. Why or why not?

Ultimately he ruined it for everyone by getting all dewy eyed and sentimental (you find this with a lot of strong enforcer types as they get older). Snappy dresser though.

15. When the Emperor died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

Hubris... You have an ambitious second in command, you interview his replacement (who just happens to be his son) in the same room as him and a pit of doom.

The writing was on the wall there.

I think he wanted to fail.

All very tragic really but so real. Been there, done that.

16. When Darth Vader died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

Silly old fart!

All that death and destruction for what?

If you are going to torture and kill the populations of entire planets (not to mention kill your friends, choke your wife and chop your kid's hand off) at least become ruler of the galaxy or something.

Bring a bit of peace to the universe to balance out all that upset.

Don't just die on the floor of a disintegrating superweapon like some chump.

17. Do you think the Emperor fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Hands up it fits me too but yes.

18. Why or why not?

He is ambitious and he isn't beyond telling a fib or two or employing a bit of disguise to get the job done but DEATH PIT! HELLO!

19. Do you think Darth Vader fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Yeah.

20. Why or why not?

He is ambitious and isn't beyond telling a fib or two or employing a bit of disguise to get the job done but the Death Star could have deployed plenty of ships to fill the trench from end to end with obstacles but no Vader had to 'have the leader'.

Ultimately his tactics back fired.

When the surprise counter attack came, it came from behind.

If he is old enough to learn this tactic and use it himself he should have prepared for it to be used against himself.

This is why he never became Emperor, it's not enough to have a plan 9 in outer space, you need a plan A through to Z and familiarise yourself with plans 1 to infinity and beyond.

1. In one sentence, what is your description of a villain?

Usualy it's an antagonist: a person who oppose the protagonist(s); a "villain" is not always a "bad guy" at heart, but his actions are worthy to fight against.

2. Do you consider yourself a Star Wars fan? On a scale of 1-10, 1 being not a fan at all and 10 being a “super fan”, what would you consider yourself?

If we speak about the OT: 9,

if we speak about the PT and clone wars: 6 (extra point for Clone Wars series),

Not counting the EU.

3. In what order did you first watch the Star Wars films?

A. Episodes 4-6 first, then Episodes 1-3

4. Who is your favorite character from the films?

I'd like to say Han Solo because he's the one everyone would like to be... but if I really want to say the truth, the more interesting and meaningful character of the saga is Luke Skywalker.

5. Who is your favorite villain from the films?

The Emperor.

6. What is the first thing you think of when you think of your favorite villain from the film?

His laugh.

7. If your favorite villain was not the Emperor, what is the first thing you think of when you think of the Emperor?

___

8. If your favorite villain was not Darth Vader, what is the first thing you think of when you think of Darth Vader?

Hi first appearence in episode 4 in the corridor.

9. What is Senator Palpatine’s motivation for becoming the Emperor?

Search for more power (hidden behind a false quest for revenge/peace).

10. What is Anakin Skywalker’s motivation for becoming Darth Vader?

His need to control everything.

11. Do you feel sympathy for the Emperor?

No.

12. Why or why not?

Because he's an antagonist of the heroes, and Star Wars (at least the OT) is written good enough to make me want the heroes to win over the antagonist. There is no redeeming side to his personality.

13. Do you feel sympathy for Darth Vader?

Yes and no.

14. Why or why not?

I feel sympathy for Vader (or should I say Anakin) only by the end of ROTJ.

And mostly because of Mark Hamill's and Sebastian Shaw scene.

During the PT he is not a likeable character enough for me to root for him. Sorry George, fail.

15. When the Emperor died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

I feel good for Vader/Anakin.

16. When Darth Vader died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

I feel sad for Luke.

17. Do you think the Emperor fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Yes.

18. Why or why not?

Because he's the main antagonist through all movies (even if not seen in the first 77' movie). and his actions are worthy to fight against.

19. Do you think Darth Vader fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Yes.

20. Why or why not?

Because even if he's not the "mastermind" antagonist of the whole saga, he is the main villain figure of the saga, and even the PT can't undo that fact. It's not because you understand why someone is doing bad thing that suddenly he is not a villain anymore. Almost every villains in superheroes comics have good reason to do bad things from their point of view. They are still villains.

Sorry, I didn't read the OP very well. I didn't see the PT first, so I guess my answers are invalid.

Author

 (Edited)

Thanks for taking more answers from the older set.  I was feeling like this forum was more likely to be able to talk about our favorite characters from Barney Miller than the PT.

    1. In one sentence, what is your description of a villain?

A villain is someone who intentionally thwarts the aspirations of other well-intended characters in the story.

    2. Do you consider yourself a Star Wars fan? On a scale of 1-10, 1 being not a fan at all and 10 being a “super fan”, what would you consider yourself?

I'd say 6.  I probably would have rated myself higher before I ran into this forum, but then I adjusted where the top of my scale was.

    3. In what order did you first watch the Star Wars films?

A. Just to be a bit pedantic, I saw them in this order: 0,5,6,1,2,3.  There was no episode number on the first Star Wars movie I saw.  And, in fact, I remember being excited about Empire being Episode V because that meant that there would be three more movies about what happened in the time between Star Wars and Empire, since Star Wars was implicitly Episode I in my mind.

    4. Who is your favorite character from the films?

Lando.  Seriously.  I'm a sucker for characters with ambiguous allegiances and realistic motivations.  He's a powerful guy who's suddenly put in a tough spot, and he tries to play it both ways to the best of his abilities (sacrificing his friends' opinion of him and a guy he doesn't know in order to save both his friends and his city).  When it's clear this strategy won't work and he's not likely to save his friends or his city, he switches tactics adeptly without tipping his hand to anyone.  And a nice cape too.

    5. Who is your favorite villain from the films?

Boba Fett (yeah, I'm one of those).

    6. What is the first thing you think of when you think of your favorite villain from the film?

I think of how shockingly competent he is compared to those around him.  This helps with my villain definition--it's not really quite enough to just TRY to thwart the heroes and fail repeatedly, you have to actually succeed every now and then.

    7. If your favorite villain was not the Emperor, what is the first thing you think of when you think of the Emperor?

The surprise I felt about the lightning.  I just did not see that coming at all, and it certainly bumped him up on the villain scale for me.  Scared the bejeezus out of me the first time.

    8. If your favorite villain was not Darth Vader, what is the first thing you think of when you think of Darth Vader?

His voice.  Without James Earl Jones, Vader would have been a much emptier suit.

    9. What is Senator Palpatine’s motivation for becoming the Emperor?

    10. What is Anakin Skywalker’s motivation for becoming Darth Vader?

I'm going to have to pass on those.  They weren't adequately explained in the OT, and I was too busy with self-injurious behavior during the PT to notice.

    11. Do you feel sympathy for the Emperor?

No.

    12. Why or why not?

He was presented exclusively as a villain, and the only development was in revealing his various deceits.  I was impressed by his machinations, but that's not quite the same thing as sympathy.

    13. Do you feel sympathy for Darth Vader?

No.

    14. Why or why not?

While he was certainly redeemed at the end, I think it took so long for him to come around to it that I'm not sure I could relate to his motivations for doing anything.

    15. When the Emperor died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

Relief.  There was lightning coming out of his hands fer crying out loud!

    16. When Darth Vader died in Episode VI, what emotions did you feel, if any?

A little boredom, honestly.  I was never the biggest Jedi fan, and this was one of those Soap Opera moments that just dragged for me.  Maybe it would have been different if I'd felt sympathy for him, but either the filmmakers or my cold, cold heart prevented that from happening.

    17. Do you think the Emperor fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Yes.

    18. Why or why not?

Lightning.  Hands.  But seriously, his goal was to crush the rebellion, which was pretty much everyone you cared about in the movie up to that point.  That's serious thwarting.

    19. Do you think Darth Vader fits into your description of a villain from question one?

Yes.

    20. Why or why not?

He spent almost all of his time chasing down and otherwise making life difficult for the rest of the characters.  A little redemption at the end doesn't mean the character is not a villain in general.

Before 1999, an 8. Now, a 1.

9. What is Senator Palpatine’s motivation for becoming the Emperor?

Control

10. What is Anakin Skywalker’s motivation for becoming Darth Vader?

Being ridiculously insecure, apparently. As we see in ROTS.

11. Do you feel sympathy for the Emperor?

Yes, the character starts off being portrayed as pretty slick all the way through TPM, then he suddenly becomes overly ridiculous and his motives just seem stupid and sad.

13. Do you feel sympathy for Darth Vader?

Absolutely not.

14. Why or why not?

George made him a character that is really hard to sympathize with. Ironically, back when he was just a villain I did sympathize with him and imagined him to have once been this really great hero. Now that we've all gotten to see him before he turned bad, I think he was a pretty horrible person from the get go. I think he was probably a better human being as a villain. In two out of three of the movies he is in as a good guy, he violently murders a group of children.

Me too.  Although Firefly has made me retroactively appreciate Harris a bit more.

Going to be kind of hard to find someone on ORIGINALTrilogy.com who saw the prequels first.

I agree with the above. Perhaps though, you would be better off searching for people who were children when they saw the PT. It matters little what order you saw the films in if you saw all of them for the first time as a child, and they were able to merge inside your memory. I mean, seeing the PT films at 9, 12, and 15 (and the OT at 5), I definitely am able to separate them to a certain degree. But when you mention a Jedi, I'm more likely to envision someone from the PT as opposed to Ben, Luke, or old Yoda. When you mention a ship from Star Wars, I'm more likely to give an OT example, though with a few PT examples in reserve... just a though, if you're having a hard time finding contrasting opinions.
