The caption for the lead picture here is priceless.

That is indeed priceless. Gee, I don't seem to remember that shot from ROTJ - hmm, maybe it was a new CGI shot made just for the blu-rays. It looks about as realistic.

Even funnier is they have the "screenshot" oriented wrong - it's supposed to be vertical. Just hilarious.

It looks like someone has mucked around with the brightness/contrast/sharpness and colars too.

It is actually an old poster. One of my close friends had it on his wall when we were kids.

I am fully aware that  Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman wrote Startrek 09. How Abrams could go with what they wrote is beyond me.  But on the other hand maybe Abrams is just as stupid as the writers are. I hope you can see where I'm going with this.

Yeah, Abrams is probably stupid, because he directed something you didn't like. But hey, I'm probably just as stupid, because I liked that movie a lot. The only one here who's not stupid is you :)

Now, regarding Ep7, can we possibly hear a Star Wars score by Michael Giacchino? I'm kinda torn on this... on the one hand, I'd love to hear another one by Williams, as that's just "how it's supposed to be". John Williams' Star Wars scores were what got me into film music in the first place, and until now Williams is the most consistence factor in the saga. On the other hand, regardless of Abrams directing (but with George taken out of the writer/director position), the new movies feel like the passing of a torch. So maybe this should be considered for the soundtrack as well?

Funnily enough discussions over at JWfan.com have already named Giacchino as a suitable composer for the new films a while back, and I agree that he is one of the few newer generation composers who might do the franchise justice. The coincidence of Abrams at the wheel now makes this even more probable to happen.

And regarding consistency: I'll never expect a new Star Wars movie to feel like the classic trilogy did in any way. It's just not possible anymore today. The prequels weren't consistent with the OT in any way, so taking the franchise in yet another direction is basically a given. And I'm fine with that, as it can only get better from the PT.

Hey, what's up with the hostility? Half of this thread has been personal attacks against people for having an opinion...

Though every post I've made in this thread has been... mysteriously skipped by discussion :P Maybe I've dodged a bullet there... ;)

Well actually, I don't cruise this site very often. It's only until just recently that I came in and commented on the news, and low and behold when I did, you popped up, and showed how bad you really where. Actually, bad is probably an understatement, maybe you should go and google that, you seem to use it alot. Maybe it will improve your spelling.

Your guess is as good as mine.  All I did was come in and comment on the news, and what did I get, an asinine responce from someone that had no business doing so in the first place.

Yeah, a smart move statistically. My problem with Abrams ( aside from his startrek history ) is that he already stated publically that he wanted nothing to do with the starwars franchise because he was already committed to the startrek franchise. Telling us one thing and doing another makes him a liar and a puppet of a sense. I don't expect these new starwars  films to be what people have been expecting them to be ( including myself ) if lucasfilm going to choose/ con people like this.

riiiiiiight.

Kasdan has a history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith

My favorite part, like an accidental insult.

An Abrams-directed Star Wars movie does.

Watched Star Trek (2009) again this very night.

The film has problems but it's actually rather well directed.

Think back to the movies Lucas watched before selecting Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand. Would you come away from Eyes of Laura Mars or Eye of the Needle saying that's the guy to make the next SW film?

I'm as worried about new Trek and new Wars feeling to similar as the next guy, but I feel you have to look at this from a strictly Episode VII perspective.

Seriously, think about it. By the time it comes out, it will have been 32 years since Return of the Jedi. Would you really want to wait 32 years for the sequel to ROTJ, and have it be bad? With J.J. Abrams, you're assured a good Star Wars film.

So maybe in the context of the current cinematic landscape, this idea might feel stale, by in the context of the Star Wars franchise itself, this is a solid choice.

Anyway, I've begun calling this Star Wars Episode VII: The Best One Since the Eighties.

Also, to anyone mad that Abrams originally refused the job: he's not the first to initially refuse then accept the job of directing a Star Wars sequel. And the other one was not Richard Marquand.

That's just the thing, though - those picks were daring and perhaps unexpected. The Abrams pick is just the opposite. It's a fine pick, but not particularly intriguing.

If they had picked Affleck or Colin Trevorrow, for example, then people would really be talking and buzzing about what they think the film would be. Instead all we have is lens flare jokes and SW/ST mashups.

Finding out Abrams is directing Star Wars is like finding out Roland Emmerich is directing an end of the world movie, or Scorsese is directing a gangster movie. Nothing wrong with it, but just not interesting or daring.

And I think Abrams felt the same two months ago. He knew that having worked on Star Trek meant it would very, very difficult for him to also do SW and keep the franchises as separate and distinct from one another as possible. But apparently Kennedy, Lucas, and Spielberg were able to convince him.

What I was trying to say is there is no way to know what kind of Star Wars film a director is going to make until they actually do so, and we won't get an inkling until at least the teaser trailer.

All we can do is cross our fingers and hope for the best. :)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, while in theory one would not know what kind of SW film a director will do, with JJ Abrams I'm strongly inclined to say I have a decent idea. And again not in a bad way. Regardless of story, I think from ST to Super 8, we have a solid idea of how JJ does sci-fi.

JJ really does embody many aspects of filmmaking from whom I presume are his two idols, Lucas and Spielberg.

ST 09 was the prequel Lucas never made!
