thanks a ton for sharing!

mp3 cap of 20 year old LD 2 VHS cap is still better than what most of us beggars have had till now: nothing, nada, nil.  Hard to say if a better cap will even surface, as some people I know have been looking for this for years more than my few years at it.  I won't go holding my breath for a better cap, I can say that.

I've got an ancient xvid here I can try synching it to until I can find better.  Ancient as I've prolly had it for close to a decade.

Thanks a lot for the MP3.

You have made a lot of people very happy, now I just need to sync this with the bluray :D

Signed up just to thank you in person. You have made my day.

It's my pleasure to share something I have enjoyed for so many years. To be honest, I jjoined the forum just to share it, so touce' LOL. By the way, I have something else rare, the copy is very old and it would be a lot of work to sync it, but if anyone is dedicated enough I have the JAL Lupin III Mystery of Mamo in English. Have a great day all.

Wow, thank you very much.

Yet another old dub that got rescued.

I have a really terrible mp3 copy of the JAL Mamo dub, and some improperly-made mkv with all 4 dubs, but half of them don't work w/o transcoding through eac3to. Both copies of the JAL dub I have are multi-generation and show signs of VHS speed fluctuation and lots of noise, etc.

Tbh, I am waiting on DiskoTek to release their DVD, and just use their copy of the JAL dub (it will have all 4 dubs) to add to the BD. I already have the other 3 dubs on retail DVDs, but I want to see how they retimed and cleaned up the JAL dub. Not knocking them, but I imagine that it will still require some more cutting in snips and syncing, judging by some of their sloppy dub syncing in the past. Still they have better audio software to cleanup the sound (as long as they don't go overboard and remove Vital parts in the audio like Criterion does in some of their audio "clean-up" -- see their DVD of the Red Balloon for example, having removed the air escaping from the Balloon, for example). I have enough on my plate to keep me busy w/o mucking around in the JAL Mamo dub till DT release their DVD.

If anyone wants the JAL dub, all the same, before DT release their DVD, iirc, I got the 4th generation+ mp3 VHS cap at lupinencyclopedia.com
yeah here we go:
http://lupinencyclopedia.com/anime/film/secret_of_mamo
look for the blue url link that says "mp3 version."

the one in the mkv that has all 4 dubs is improperly made. It requires reencoding the JAL and Streamline dubs, and resampling to 48k for DVD, since they are 44.1 even though encoded to AC3. They have bad header data or smth, so that basically they can't be played like they are. If anyone wants that conversion I made of the JAL dub, I can post it, but I think it is even more generations of lossy transcodes and VHS copy generations than the low-fi mp3 above.

While every single one of the old dubs is available on japan dvd except for kiki, including the old dub for castle of cagliostro.  None have been carried over to the blu ray.

The Japan blu ray for cagliostro has no dub or subtitle.  The Europe releases are all the new dub and probably the dubtitles.

I wish i could watch the blu rays with the older dubs but that is not going to happen.

The so called JAL mamo dub apparently was an in house dub by TOHO, the same people who did the godzilla dubs that are not currently available right?

I don't know about Godzilla dubs, but iirc, they (Toho) were responsible for that awful Macross Do You Remember Love dub (no, not Clash of the Bionoids hacked version, also by Toho, but the whole film has a dub, last available on LD, from my understanding, other than fan discs which added it to the DVDs and BDs); the awful dub which featured Hong Kong natives as part of an English as a second language learning practice mixed with some Aussies for good measure. Only for watching out of curiosity, imo. Or to get drunk to, and similar fun.

that said, I kind of like the JAL/Toho Mamo dub. I only wish that there were better versions available. The only full length versions are fan capped VHS tapes from decades ago, many Nth generation. The dub was released on Italian DVDs, but an edited version missing about (iirc) 30 minutes. I have the ITA disc and the edits are pretty bad and make the movie kind of a disaster. Now I have been reminded that the Discotek version of the JAL dub is coming from a fan who is sourcing the base from the ITA DVD, and the remaining ~30 minutes from the best-known fan preservation.

If I ever can get some HDD space (or better yet, a new HDD) I will be adding these old dubs from many of these to BDs and DVDs. I have access to using Scenarist SD and Scenarist BD, so they will certainly be compliant-spec discs. The HDD space is a killer, tho :/

Cagliostro BD with both Eng dubs/subs (maybe other dubs, subs), and Mamo BD (all 4 English, maybe other dubs +subs, depending on bitrate) are definitely among those custom projects on my backburner (waiting for a HDD), along with Totoro. Kiki I do not yet have the BD... and the splicing/timestretching/pitch correction needed for the only cap we have for the Streamline dub is daunting (though I think timetrtching will fix many timing issues).

Right now I am working on an easier sub/dub BD project, since I already have the subs timed for 23.976, dub is synced for the R2J custom I did (R2J has same master as BD, and I rechecked in Vegas and the sync is perfect). I just have to re-style subs and do more fancy effects for the BD, and then render them. But this is hardly some older VHS/LD dub, so kind of more OT than I need to get in to here.

I have created my custom BD with the Streamline dub, 10 other audio tracks, and 4 fansub scripts (since retail subs are all dubsubs), authored with Scenarist BD. Those of you familiar with asiandvdclub can find it there soon.

btw, anyone else wanting to work with the Streamline dub mp3, you'll find that you need to splice the audio at the place where the tape had a stretch in it and some squaking feedback. Otherwise it loses sync. It is at the farewell party for Kiki, as she is about to leave home, the local girls are expressing their jealousy. split it there and remove some delay (and fade out the feedback).
best bet is to sync the beginning part to video, then sync the remainder after the stretch in the tape, figure out the ms diff between the 2 syncs, and splice and remove that amount in delay at the split.
also some noise reduction can be helpful, since the noise floor really goes up at around 1hr14.5 min, and you can also hear in some quiet section background chatter from previous VHS recordings below Kiki from somewhere in the vhs generation chain. I widened the stereo imaging a bit, too.

By the way, I had someone in my anime club rip 4 dvd's for me to my hard drive. I don't know what exactly he did and I don't know how to utilize them but I could look them up and see if I could somehow share them.

They were:

My Neighbor Totoro (2002 dvd with older Macek dub)

The Jungle Book (first dvd in original 4:3 aspect ratio)

The Aristocats (2002 dvd again in original 4:3 aspect ratio) think the picture quality is outstanding.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1999 dvd without the opening sequence blue tinted, good transfer but print is somewhat scratched and damaged)

I don't know if anybody else noticed this but Laputa and Kiki are both cropped in their 2010 dvd editions compared to the previous region one versions. I noticed in Laputa right away when the first wide shot we see of Laputa after they've landed, cuts off the top and bottom of the castle in the new dvd. I'm pretty sure this was not intended to be cropped that way by the animation, why would you use a really wide panaramic shot and then clip part of the main object?

Anyways, it's not clipped in the 2003 dvd. I've been meaning to take basic screencaps along with that and the color timing of Blade Runner from the documentaries compared to the archival versions. Same with Truman Show, the older dvd is less cropped.

But I've been meaning to take comparison shots since 2010 and never gotten around to it.

Not to be too much off topic, but that release is accidentally cut by a few lines.

Hey guys! I wanted to ask if someone could re-upload the mp3 track? I had been hunting for this dub for awhile and just now stumbled on this forum, but the rapidshare link no longer works.

In the Region 1 NTSC dvd?

Anyways, I looked up the specs of the dvd's I had my friend rip. I don't know much about the file format or how they can be opened so you guys will have to tell me if they would be of any help.

They are ISO image files, which apparently opens with roxio creator

My Neighbor Totoro- Fox dvd 4:3 P&S Macek dub
TOTORO.iso 3.42 GB

Aristocats- Gold Collection 4:3
ARISCATS.iso   4.27 GB

Jungle Book- Limited Edition 4:3
JUNGLE.iso    4.29 GB

On Her Majesty's Secret Service- special edition
ONHERMAJ.iso 4.28 GB

I suspect the ripping program he used automatically shrank the file size to be under 4.3 GB so that it could be easily burned to a single layer dvd. I think all of them were dual layer encoded discs.

Yes, just the OHMSS unless it's the Ultimate Edition. I'm not talking about any of the Anime DVDs.

Totoro (the R1 FOX/Lorber DVD Edition with Macek dub, cropped to 4:3) was natively a DVD5.  It is not compressed, but quite a bad DVD.  The R2J also features this same dub, fwiw.

Aristocats and Jungle Book are definitely compressed from DVD9, likely using DVDShrink :/

regarding ISO, you can either install a tool like Virtual Clone Drive (free through AnyDVD) and use it to mount DVD ISOs to make virtual DVD drives on your PC, then play in any software DVD player, or you can burn them using ImgBurn or Nero.  You can also see the files inside the ISO using a tool like 7zip or winrar.

Hey, djmasturbeat, can you reupload the movie to sendspace or a non-sendspace site on which the file is not dropped when timed out.

I didn't see mentioned that the Disney's Kiki dub was revised in 2010.  If you were looking to collect all tracks, you'd need the '98 and '10 releases.

Now, the English presentation on this 2010 DVD differs from the original 1998 one that was found on the 2003 DVD. The new DVD retains the movie's previously dropped original Japanese title logo screen. Here, it replaces the opening English cast voice credits screen. The most noticeable difference in the soundtracks is that the English title and closing credits songs have been edited back to the Japanese song selections performed by Yumi Arai. Before this, the English cut had provided "Soaring" and "I'm Gonna Fly" as performed by Sydney Forest, the end credits singer for the short-lived WB high school drama "Popular."

Another change involves something of a spoiler (skip to the next paragraph, if you wish), for it deals with a short but significant moment from the film's final minutes. Previously in the English dub, following the climax, Jiji asks Kiki if she can hear him talk (since we can once again, our answer is an implied yes). This was added for the English cut, restoring order as Miyazaki apparently never intended (but must have approved). The line is now gone, sadly implying that Kiki has grown out of being able to hear her cat talk.

Upon doing a synched-up comparison, I noticed that the edits go far beyond that one line of dialogue. The 2010 DVD drops a considerable amount of character dubbing. Most affected is Jiji, for whom Hartman had provided a number of witty ad-libs. Here, unless a character is explicitly shown to be speaking, they're silent. The silence goes even further in few scenes that had score apparently added for the English dub; these now appear without music. Other noticeable losses include Kiki and Jiji's in-flight and in-rain banter (particularly the latter, upon arriving in their new town), some of Tombo's lines, and a radio report. Furthermore, some minor changes occur in the credited titles of certain filmmakers.

I didn't know there were alternate English dubs of some of these movies. Too bad they're only for a few of them =/ I always hear about how good his films are, but I saw Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa, and Disney's "voice acting" is so bad, they left me with very little encouragement to watch the rest =(

Kiki, Laputa, Totoro and Porco Rosso, right?

Only one of those I haven't seen (in any form) is Porco Rosso. And I've heard the pre-Rat dubs for the other 3.

The Disney one is Michael Keaton on Porco Rosso.  The laserdisc i have is some other actor.

But i also believe like all the older dub's except for Kiki it was released on DVD prior to being excluded on the blu ray.

Note i only mentioned Kiki because Warriors of the Wind is a cut version of Nausicaa and only available on vhs.  And never in Japan.

The English script for Princess Mononoke is quite good, its Neil Gaiman.  But most people cannot agree they either love the voice acting or hate it.

I do remember people being incensed that Dana Scully's voice was in the movie.  Gillian's an actress.  Your stuck on her playing a single role too bad.

Anyway that is what i said to one of my friends who hated that she was in the movie.  Watch the DVD with the Japanese dialogue track with subtitles then.

Or were they dubtitles.  I cannot exactly remember been ages since i saw the DVD.
