Mostly, yes, sometimes I change the resizing method based on the type and quality of video I'm watching. I use MadVR mainly because its full-screen exclusive mode is the only way to avoid tearing on my computer without using the very inconvenient D3D full-screen function offered by the other renderers.
Wait a minute, 720p, did I miss something? The work you're doing is amazing, unbelievably meticulous, so I don't understand why you'd do it on anything but the highest resolution source available. Given the amount of effort, it's not like you'd ever want to redo it. I'm sure there's a good reason for it, I just can't guess what it would be. Sorry if this is rehashing an old topic, it's a long thread. ;)
He went with 720p because a) his PC isn't powerful enough to edit 1080p footage properly and b) so that the gap in quality between the Blu-ray material and any SD material used isn't as jarring.
That, plus there isn't that much more resolution on the 1080p BD to begin with; here's a screenshot from the BD, showing a cut-out at the original 1080p resolution and next to it is an image that has been scaled down to 720p and then upscaled to 1080p:

Think in terms of the lowest common denominator. 1080p would make the GOUT-sourced bits, among other things, more noticeable. 720p turns out to be a better end product because it blends together better.

Right, because the Lowry restoration wasn't actually supposed to be used for an HD release (but lazy Lucasfilm did it anyway).

Gotcha. Well, I would have run a donation drive to get you a new system if I'd known that was a factor. I do see that there is likely minimal difference, and the real problem is that the source material from Lucasfilm is crappy (daaaaamn you George Lucas!), but I frankly feel like the reasoning of "SD material blended in would look worse" doesn't really hold up. You're basically saying we want the whole movie to look crappier so that the crappiest looking bits look better by comparison, which is kind of ridiculous in the first place, but then it also clashes with the example above showing there *isn't* that much difference.
Anyway, it is what it is, and more importantly there would not be a dramatic difference in detail anyway. I could probably get a 1080p native equivalent result by just running a good sharpening post filter.

Well, that's only true to a certain degree, since if that was indeed the case, then it should logically follow that a complete GOUT upscale, like DJ and You_Too's Project Blu, is the best version to watch - and for many it may well be but not for me. Adywan actually gave the same reason to refuse to do his ESB Theatrical Reconstruction in HD back in the day. My main reason for doing 720p was always my computer not being up to the task and the quality of elements matching better was more of an advantage of the decision that was already made for other reasons - at one point I was actually considering trying to do v2.0 at 1080p but seeing what is shown in the pictures above, I decided that there wasn't much point to it, especially since it would mean super slow work and horribly long rendering times.
Just got a chance to watch 2.0 last night. I watched it twice it was so enjoyable. Great work all around! Thanks Harmy! Can't wait to see what happens with 2.1 as well as Empire and Jedi.

Harmy when you do version 2.1 and 2.0 for the other two I think it would be pretty cool if you included some interactive menus and maybe even a little documentary, but that might be a little too much menus would be cool though
Is anyone working on a bonus DVD for this release? You know, a non-anamorphic, washed-out, shaky, dirty, smeared version of the Special Edition? Maybe the 97 version but with the 2011 soundtrack? So people could see what the Special Edition really was like, for objective comparison.

Or simply in black & white, just like in the theaters. :)
Or better yet, the forced 3D nonsense in theaters next year. But then again, that would be contributing money to the wrong cause.

Harmy, just watched your DeSpecialized Episode 4, brought back so many memories. I have the Laserdiscs, but my laserdisc player has long since died.
The original VHS of Episode 4 was the first VHS my family got back in the day when we got our first VHS player. Was amazing to me back then.
So amazing that thanks to your efforts, I will be able to share the same magic with my young Nephew in a few years when he's old enough :)

Harmy, I would just like to take a moment to say thank you. I own the original trilogy on VHS and I remembering the dismay I felt at popping the first DVD release of a A New Hope into my player and finding there was no option to play the theatrical release. You're doing fantastic work to a dedicated community. Can't thank you enough.
I have the first Despecialized Edition of A New Hope and just got The Remastered Version (2.0, whatever people like to call it) via TehParadox.

The 640Kbps 5.1 track has some bad compression issues.
The 77 Stereo and mono may have been affected as well.
Replacement tracks are available from tehparadox and usenet.
I was able, via TehParadox, to find Star Wars Despecialized Remastered on Usenet which was fantastic but I was unable to find any of the fixed audio tracks. The fixed Spanish and German tracks are on Usenet but not the English. Does anyone know if the English fixed audio remains available via Usenet?

The current version of Star Wars Despecialized Edition Remastered on Usenet is named Fixed_DeEdv2.0. Does anyone know if this applies to the audio issues listed above or does this release need the updated audio tracks swapped in?
