Fantasia 1982 Soundmix — Page 3

The Super 8's I've seen previously listed were individual segments of the film. The Sorcerer's Apprentice seems to be the most common one.

Is it for certain the Pastoral was censored outside the U.S. after the 1960's?

Where were you in '77?

Can't say... But apparently, yes. If it wasn't, people would have found some copies years ago.

Not necessarily definitive, but some interesting notes here:

Wikipedia - Fantasia (film) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasia_(film)

1969, 1977, 1982, 1985 and 1990 runs
Fantasia began to make a profit from its $2.28 million budget after its return to theaters on December 17, 1969. The film was promoted with a psychedelic-styled advertising campaign .... The release is also noted for the controversial removal of four scenes from The Pastoral Symphony over racial stereotyping. Fantasia was issued on a regular basis, typically for exhibition in art houses in college towns, until the mid-1970s.

Home media - Audio
Disney considered releasing a multi-disc 78-rpm record album of Fantasia's soundtrack in conjunction with the film's 1940 roadshow release, but this idea was not realized. The soundtrack was ultimately released as a three record LP set in sixteen countries by Disneyland Records in 1957 under the catalog number WDX-101. ... The Fantasia soundtrack album contains all of the musical selections but none of the commentary from the film. After stereo LP's became possible, Buena Vista Records released a stereo version of the soundtrack album.

I was able to get a copy of the 1982 Kostal recording of Fantasia, and would like to mix it back into the video from the new Blu-ray. ... If anyone has Deems Taylor recordings, that would be great as well.

This showed up on eBay and I was expecting someone to mention it ... so I guess that'd be me:

FANTASIA - DISNEY - 16MM - EXCELLENT+ FUJI ORIGINAL!! MYLAR!!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FANTASIA-DISNEY-16MM-EXCELLENT-FUJI-ORIGINAL-MYLAR-/150969697438
* I started collecting film in 1973. Out of the 4 Fantasia prints I have owned, this one is by far the best.
* This 1977 FUJI print clocks in at around 116 min. In all these years, I have never seen a 125 min. roadshow print in 16mm (extra commentary by Deems Taylor). I have been told that the roadshow version was never printed in 16mm.
* Original Deems Taylor narration. This print includes Deems Taylor's own voice instead of overdubbing by another actor as later versions do.

It's $500 starting bid may not be worth it for this preservation, but there it is.

Does it include the Pastoral in its complete form ? If yes, it might be interesting enough ?

Being struck 10 years after the scene was censored...prolly not.

Ooh, a Mylar print. That would be a great thing to preserve, especially the audio...

Btw, for film noobs, Mylar never gets VS.

There was a little bidding action on that auction. The guy who won it showed a distinct interest in other movie & film auctions, where he had pending bids.

Wikipedia's entry Fantasia (film) indicates this 1977 print maybe one of the more complete releases of the full Taylor narration & Stokowski orchestration. You presently have most of the narration? Perhaps contacting that auction winner, for an audio recording from his new film, might help in your project ...

How do you see who won? I thought that was confidential...

(Oops, this isn't a THX 1138 thread. I'm mixing my metaphors.)

Privacy at eBay is a myth.
(There ... that's more in keeping with Fantasia.)

The eBay auction's Bid History shows the bidders (obfuscated by periodically changed anagrams). The links from the bidders shows their Bid History Details with a 30 Day Bid History. That's where you extrapolate their interest based on their submitted/pending bid-categories.

eBay's feedbacks are listed with user handles in the clear. Once the exchange has been made between seller and buyer, feedback left/received will reveal the user's actual handle. From there, you may be able to send an eBay message to that handle through eBay's Advanced Search of a buyer/seller. (I've never had occasion to go that far, but that's the procedure.)

Just thought of this project today while doing a cover for Fantasia. Any updates?

I for one would appreciate any release, even it if wasn't perfect.

I know. I'm working on getting it all finished up. I hate to be "one of those people" who starts a project, has a quick spurt of production and then gets caught up with other things, but believe me, this will see the light of day.

At this point, it's probably looking like a mid-late summer release, but it will be this year, once the school year winds down and I get some more free time to work on it.

One of the things that is bogging it down is my work on Song of the South, which you may or may not be interested in, Video Collector. Also, if you don't mind sharing your cover, that would be amazing!

Ah, good to know this isn't another orphaned project. I have watched Fantasia to death over the last 20 years and seeing it with the Kostal score will give it a new lease of life for me. I appreciate your efforts immensely.

The Fantasia cover is part of a vintage-inspired series of covers I'm doing for a client. Nothing very elaborate.

ww12345, in your fantasia project, did you manage to find a good quality source other than the BR ? If so that would be interesting to find a source that have the Pastoral uncut/unedited and the whole film with the right colors even thought that it wont probably fit with the I. Kostal score.

By the way, any update on your SOTS project ?

Thanks to answer

Ooh, that cover art is nice. Would you mind posting a link to it when you are finished? I'm working on one, too, that is reminiscent of the old '82 poster - when I'm finished I'd be happy to post it here...

Also, you should check out the Song of the South preservation thread that is here. At the moment, my 16mm print is being prepped for scanning and I should have the first test pictures very soon.

As to the colors of Fantasia, no, I have not found an alternate-BD source. Is there something really wrong with the colors of the BD? To me they seemed OK, but Fantasia is not as much of my forte as some other movies might be.

I think there's every reason to keep the BD as the main source for this project. Though the colours are different to what I'm used to from my laserdisc from the 90s, there's no denying the superior detail and clarity of the Blu-ray transfer.

While an uncensored version of the Beethoven segment would be ideal, I wouldn't want it to trip up or delay the project.

Regarding my cover, my client is undecided about whether he wants the final series shared or not. He's usually good about these things, so he probably will.

Here's a few updates. The pastoral is now 3/5 of the way completed. The other 2/5 is the trickiest part. The following are the good, 3/5 portion, and are finished. This means the 1982 audio in full stereo.

The next part I will upload is the 2/5 portion, with the '41 mix in the L channel and the '82 mix in the R channel, so people can see where I am.

Here's parts 2-3 of the Pastoral. It's kind of a mess. I don't know whether they cut the film further at the spots where the '82 mix drops out, or if that was editing to fit it onto the soundtrack record... Either way, it is not going to be fun. I'm having the same issues with Night on Bald Mountain...

Also, my thoughts on a "Sunflower" scene are this: since they wouldn't have been present in the '82 version, I think I would even have cut it had it been present on the BR.

Keep up the good work. If it was easy, someone else would have done it by now :-)

That's actually the same CD I have. The reason I thought that it might have been edited for the record is because I assume that when they pressed the CD, it was so much of an afterthought that the record set run-time probably took priority.

I'll keep fiddling with it, and see if I can have another video up tonight. Meanwhile, any suggestions as to what to do with the middle Pastorale segments?

Author
Time

OK, here's the Bald Mountain/Ave Maria bit. At this point, I'm pretty happy with the Bald Mountain segment except for a few places. The first place is the cymbal crashes as the skeletons change from negative to positive images as they ride through the sky to Chernabog. I feel like the crashes are a hair off - which may have been authentic to the '82 release; I remember some people saying that certain parts the Kostal score was right on, other times it was way off, and this could have been one of those times. In any case, I will probably move it so that the crashes line up better with the flashes.

The other part I'm not too thrilled with is the section after the tubular bells. The bells line up OK, but everything after that is a nightmare to deal with. I've already got it spliced in about 100 sections after that, and stuff still isn't lined up right. I'll keep working on it, but I'm definitely open to suggestions as to how to line things up/improve things.

Here's the video: https://vimeo.com/65872660

I just took a look and listen, and I think this is as good as it needs to be. I noticed the minute difference in the cymbal crashes that you noted, but the Kostal recording is so different who's to say it wasn't always so.

Looking through all of your uploaded videos, I remain impressed with what you've accomplished, and it goes a long way in explaining why Disney didn't include this recording as an alternate track. The 1982 edit must have been quite different to the one we are used to seeing, and it's too bad we don't have a bootleg of it to reference.

Instead of filling in the gaps in the 1982 CD, perhaps you're better off just taking the missing parts out of the video entirely. Would that be too jarring, storywise I mean?
