...What is even worse is that it will spread to your other films - you can't store VS films anywhere near non-VS films...

That is so crazy.  How is that even possible??

I think it has to do with the fact that VS is a problem caused by developing solutions left on the film - I think it "spreads" to the other films by the gas of the developing solutions from the VS film spreading to the non-VS films...

Would a reel container which can suck out the air and make a better vacuum seal help?

There are a number of companies that make film cans that are vented to allow the films to off-gas the acetic acid instead of keeping it stored in the can thereby creating a hyperacidic environment. But if you use these types of cans they need to be stored in a clean space so particulates do not enter the cans.

Just as important as separating the prints with vinegar syndrome is keeping your films in a cool and dry environment.

Removing the film from metal reels & cans helps somewhat. Last year I had 2 B&W 16mm films of TV shows from the 1950s transferred to DVD, and the owner of the shop told me that ideally the film should be on a plastic reel, but he told me I should at the very least take the metal film reel w/film out of the metal can and put it in a plastic bag. I use the kind with a drawstring, and allow it to vent at the top. One of the films has VS, the other one doesn't (different stocks, I guess) so I keep the one with VS in a different room. :-/

I've had good results in delaying the VS for smelly films using a plasticiser made in Queensland.

Nothing else I have tried helps.

Yes, poita, there is a plasticizer that claims to stop it, but it does just delay it. Similarly, FilmRenew will slow the process - basically you just soak the print in this stuff and it temporarily slows the VS, but in the end, all VS films will eventually turn to salad dressing.

Delaying it would still give you more time to scan it.

Well, yes and no. Delaying it still means the VS is present, and let me tell you that VS symptoms are not pretty. Film pretty much starts curling immediately, leading to focus problems and more. What's more, is that the VS can transfer from print to print by going through the same film gate, so there's always that danger, too...

A system crash wiped out all my browser cookies, and when I try to log back in, it says "Login failed". When I try to recover my password, it says my e-mail address doesn't exist in the system. What's going on? How do I get back into the blog?

The blog won't even load for me. It hasn't been working for a few days now. Anyone else have that problem?

Works for me, oddly.

It's the same for me. I thought about posting here, but I figured I'd give it a few more days. It just won't load on my end.

May the Force be with you.

It works fine for me.

Cool! Would you (or anyone) post a few of the Star Wars caps (if available), with info on it's condition (sticky, warp/curl, etc.)?

It's just to sell "soap" to them. Something to get your attention to sell their soap (and so the nickname of day-time TV dramas). When ratings (or ticket sales) drop off, make another drama (or movie) ... to sell the soap.

Short work for a laser scanner ... anybody got one?

An interview with a transfer technician, working on the Star Trek TV series remaster, mentioned that their scan was so precise, it could focus exclusively on the emulsion layer, thereby bypassing all the wear and damage on the film base:

and more how the pros work; you can, too (if you've got the money):

I can't login to the blog, I get always a timeout message when I try to even load the page. It doesn't work for at least a week. -1, where are you when we need you ? :-)

Wait, I thought the blog was disabled because -1 decided it had gone as far as it could?  Now I check the URL and voila, new content!

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

The site is still up and has been all week. New content posts have slowed down a little recently, but it should pick up again soon. My goal is to have something new on the site at least every three days, but I don't always have something new to post.

If you still can't get to the site, try flushing your DNS entries. On Windows, open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter.

Alright, the good thing is I can log in today. The bad thing is that after logging it (which takes MUCH longer than usually) all content on the page is in (I think) Japanese. Are you guys experimenting with the server configuration or something ?
