reality: everyones got to boycott

Striped down to basic harsh terms, both signing the petition and buying the new releases is a contradiction of aims.
If your buying the dvd your a part of the problem this forum has where nothing will get done to help the cause. And you should'nt hope that the OT will ever be released because nothing nothing nothing elce will make George notice in the only place left that counts, $$$$ figures.
if you've ordered it - cancel it.
if your gona buy it - change your mind to help this petition reach its aims.

*Or*... pre-order, then cancel upon the official announcment on Sept 8th.

I think cancelled pre-orders once they've announced it's the SE crap will be more effective.

My stance on revising fan edits.

A boycott is probably our best shot, but unfortunately I don't think it will work, especially when you consider how well the DVDs have been selling. Hopefully, though, there'll be lots of cancelled pre-orders after the announcement on September 8th is made.

Hal you put the old Jabba in the montoge. You forget that for these DVDs use a much better model will be used. Also how the fuck can anyone complain about the new Wampa. Thats my favorite change. I never liked the hidden monster thing. Its just badly done originally. The arguement that it was more suspensful is just stupid. This isn't Alien this is Star Wars. At least in those suspense movies we do see the monster at the end. Here we never see it. I want to see the fucking thing. Also the new Wampa was definutly originally intended. We even see some of the old test wampa footage that didn't work in the 1979 trailer. Why the hell in Gods hell would anyone want the sarlacc to be a hole in the ground. It looks now like a living creature and more dangerous and threatning. Another change I love. You liked the old Mos Eislay. It didn't fit in with the future world of Star Wars. It was bland and boring. Its so much more majestice then before and more full of life. Greedo shooting first I agree with you on. I don't like that. However it looks alot better then it did in 1997. Plus all the whinning for two seconds of cinema.

That two seconds completely destory's Han's character. It's rather crucial, actually.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Jimbo, again, just because you think it was a good change doesn't make it fact. I'm indifferent to the wampa scene. I did hate the shuttle scene and most of the other changes. If I wanted to be like you, I should just say, "Who the hell wants poorly done CGI". Unlike you, I know that some wouldn't agree with that statement. The new Sarlaac looks like a Venus fly trap ala Little Shop of Horrors. Mos Eisley made more sense to me in the original. Tatooine is a backwater planet, no one goes there except to hide. Having Mos Eisley as a bustling spaceport make about as much sense as building New York City in the middle of the Sahara. What does it matter if they updated Jabba and Greedo. A slightly better looking piece of crap(IMO) is still a piece of crap. You like them Jimbo, go watch them. We have nothing against this. But your whole, "Why the hell would anyone want to watch the original versions" attitude has got to stop.

Yeah, that's what I thought when I first see it too! The sarlacc looks like Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors indeed!

I don't want that crap!

You do realize that most of these changes were the good ones, right? The only changes that bother me are Greedo shooting first, which takes less than two seconds, and the new Sy Snoodles song. To add insult to injury, the VHS of the SE had "Jedi Rocks" twice.

Which is why I am looking forward to DVDs. Instantly skip Jedi Rocks and RotJ becomes better!

I see you updated the pic, Hal. Wow, that balcony shot looks worse than I remember. I agree with you whole heartedly. I don't want these discs. I'm in the process of getting some, "5-inch Laserdiscs".

Again, saying "most of these changes were the good ones" is an opinion, as is calling them "crap". I personally can't stand most of "the good ones". That's my opinion.

What? What is wrong with the balcony shot. It is one of the few changes that isnt obvious.
Again, why get so bent out of shape over FIVE SECONDS of footage? Why does it matter?

I don't know about anyone else, but personally, for me it's not quantity, but quality that matters when it comes to these changes. It doesn't matter to me whether a change is five seconds or five minutes, just how bad it is. If a change is very bad, awful, ridiculous and completely unnecessary, even if it's just half a second it can still ruin the entire scene, especially if it takes place at a crucial point in the scene. A very good example of this is Greedo shooting first. It's just half a second, but still ruins the entire scene for me because of how bad it is.

I can't speak for anyone else in this matter, but I'm pretty sure others feel the same way as I do.

The balcony shot was painfully obvious that it had been recolored. If you can't figure out how much 5 seconds can change a film, then we can't tell you fully. Look at the difference between directors cuts. The Extended LOTR trilogy has a completely different feel to it as it focuses more on character building. Granted those scenes are longer than five seconds, but the length isn't as important. In the SE, it's different. While the addittions aren't long, they're more than a simple longer scene. They're complete reworkings. They change the centre of a scene. Instead of seeing Leia, Lando and Chewie running to stop Boba Fett, I see a balcony that wasn't there before. I know it wasn't there, so it's hard to ignore. Even if I could, the look and feel is changed. When I saw Star Wars on the bigscreen in 97, I didn't go to see the changes. I wasn't looking for them, I just wanted to see one of my favorite films on the big screen. The first showing however, the changes were so noticable and blatent, that I lost track of what was happening. My eye was drawn to the changes, forcing me to acknowledge them.

What he's done has changed the look, focus, and feel of these movies. Instead of the character and story driven films of the OT, the SE feels like a special effects film. Chalk it up to just not liking change, but the SE isn't Star Wars to me. That's my opinion.

Well, I must say I'm *still* contemplating whether to buy the new DVD set or not.

I for one don't really mind some added CG sfx, but some things are just too much to swallow (Greedo shooting first, and RotJ has a new music scene or something?) ...

I think I'll borrow the set from a friend or something and have a look, it would make me feel *very* bad to pay for something as terrible as this new set *could* be, so I don't want to rush out to the shop and buy it the day it becomes available.

From GL's point of view, I kinda understand the changes, though - he's bringing the old trilogy to a new generation on DVD (and wants to spice up the films nearer to the 21st century's standards level), but I seriously think he should have stopped adding sfx and changes already. The SE set already had lots of changes, I haven't read any reviews about this new set but I'm really fearing the worst... Yes, I know - the "new generation set" was the SE set, but you know Mr. Lucas, he's never turned down a good opportunity to squeeze cash out of his favourite film concept... I guess the fact that he (at this point) doesn't want to distribute the old, original editions is that he quite honestly feels that those weren't the versions he intended to make in the first place (for some reason). What I would like, though, is an official, original edition set on DVD. No added stuff, even if the picture quality is not superb. Period.

Anyway, I'm happy to notice that people aren't flaming each other on this forum, everyone seems to appreciate the fact that people's opinions differ. I like that, seems most of us aren't teenagers here

Bottom line: I really wish I have the balls to boycott this new set, *if* it is so bad that I need to.

The SE is not the DVD.

In ANH, the Greedo scene has been tightened. From leaked footage, Greedo now shoots exactly 2 FRAMES before Han does. That's less than 1/10th of a second at 24 frames per second. Also, in both the SE and the DVD Han shoots Greedo TWICE. Also, the DVD restores Han's, "Yes, I bet you have," as it sounded pre-SE.

Jabba's appearance in ANH has been redone from scratch and screenshots from the SE are no more representative of the DVD than pictures of the Irish actor who was on the set. Jabba looks a LOT better on the DVD, better than his appearance in Episode I.

Also, the DVD of ESB removes the scream added when Luke jumps after the duel, and actually FIXES flaws in the original like in the shot on the Executor bridge that is obviously flipped backwards, the officers uniforms have been digitally corrected so they appear to be turned around correctly. That is an indisputable improvement.

Finally, the incredible work done restoring the sharpness and detail of the film and recompositing original effects will make the blending of digital effects into the movie appear far more seamless. When you actually watch the films you will feel the story being told more intensely than before simply because you can see so much more detail and it seems so much more real.

Experience the films as they are now. Hear the story in your mind based on what you see and hear, not on what you remember. Feel, don't think.

Not only does Jabba look better but his facial expressions and hand gesters have been changed. He seems more real in so many ways. For example when Han steps on his tail he now gives a look after of being seriously pissed off then gives a big smile when Han offers him more money. I never had to much of a problem with the way Jabba looked before but in comparision with this much better model he looked bad.

Magic_Al: Good post, thanks for the info.

As said, I will have to watch those movies before buying. I'll have the TR47 original editions in the shelf anyway, so I might just go and buy the new set, too, if the films aren't too badly spoiled with changes and sfx
