I recommend getting some GUI for mplayer or even just good ol' VLC.

Admittedly, VLC isn't the best thing in town, but it certainly is a huge

improvement over friggin' QuickTime Player. I was gonna recommend

CCCP and MPCHC (which comes with CCCP), but it seems you use Mac OS X.

So anyway, that might fix your problem.
