Why did the rebels destroy the AT-At walker on Hoth in episode 5???

This is a cool idea. I like that a lot.

One of the few memories I have of my first viewing of Empire was seeing those Rebels rush out of the trench and assuming they were going to try to capture the AT-AT, as it made no sense for them to leave a defensive position otherwise. Then it cuts to the speeders destroying it and I thought, "Oh. Well, I guess it's weak in the neck!" (by which I meant the corrugated passage between head and shoulders).
