I have both Moth3r's and LeeThorogood's copy of that set, You_Too. I can post those images from them tonight...

Lee did the French Coffret set of the SE.  He did 2 versions....I have both.

He also, as a side-project, did the French 1995 THX (non-SE) set.

I'd forgotten as there wasn't a torrent made for them.  Lee sent me discs personally of the 2 SE sets he did.  I'd bet the THX sets he did looked nice too.  I'm gonna have to learn the newsgroups...not having some sets only available there blows.  :)

Sorry, the Collector's Edition (the one with the white box set, to be clear, 1995) is clearly NOT smear-free... and also full of DVNR artifacts, like DC and "faces"... so LDDB was wrong... the inner sleeves are similar to the european THX, with the same cover art, but I presume the master used is the same of DC and "faces"...

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

I'm referring to the Japanese Special Collection from 1986.

SF148-1196
SF148-1242
SF148-1343

This smear-free set was used for the V8, X9, and Dark/Sega preservations.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

This project is on hold, as my wife decided to wrap the laserdiscs for Christmas.

Thats not 100% correct.

For the 97SE I used the UK PAL 97 SE box set, I did two versions the 1st of which wasn't a public release.

For the non SE I used the French 1995 THX Coffret box set. The only difference between the Coffret box set and the French 1995 THX individual releases used by Moth3r is that the Coffret has English audio and French subtitles throughout in the lower black border, where as the individual releases have French audio and only have French subtitles in the lower black border for Greedo's & Jabba's lines if I recall correctly.

Just thought I would clear this up. :)

Nice to hear that you got a copy of your own, that went fast. :) Looking forward to see what quality you can get out of it, and if it suffers from the crosstalk seen on my copy.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Yes, it most certainly did.

I just e-mailed every SWE seller on Amazon and eBay to ask them for the mint marks and waited to see Technidisc's format :-)

I think most of the crosstalk will be eliminated by the comb filter in my Panasonic DMR-ES10, but we'll have to wait until Christmastime to know...

The kind of crosstalk I'm referring to in this case is what appears to be a mastering defect, see here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/STAR-WARS-Special-Widescreen-Edition-Technidisc/post/582702/#TopicPost582702

Thank you for clearing it up.  I'd rather be aware of what I have then somewhat clueless because I thought differently.....LOL.

I still watch these.....a very special treat for sure.

I just purchased a Panasonic LX-900U, a very highly-rated LD player known for its noise-free picture and lack of CLV smearing.

In fact, the ultra-rare high-end Runco LJR I/II is just a clone of this model with some added features!

I got a good deal, too.

sweet! are you planning to do a straight or a tweaked preservation so you can compare&contrast with myscamore's versions. Also are you still going to be preservaing your 92 vhs collectors tape - I'm interested to see how that stacks up against the technidisc, if theres any undiscovered differences

I plan to do a straight preservation of it. I'll be using TooT (better than MedianOfThree for laserdiscs), so I plan to take three captures of each side. (That's 27 in total!)

I'll keep it at 29.970, but will do a second release at 23.976 if a certain OT member is willing to help me with the manual IVTC'ing.

And, yes, I have many pending preservation projects. All will get done, in time... :-)

Also, I'll be using the following for the final results: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Moth3rs-guide-to-LD-capture-colour-correction-using-AviSynth-emphasis-on-correction/topic/14582/

I received the Panasonic LX-900U yesterday in excellent condition. It works very well and provides a nearly-noise-free picture (without NR turned on!).

Holy crap, this is what I've done for months with no luck. I was beginning to think there was no Technidisc ESB or ROTJ. Can't remember if it's been covered elsewhere, but were these ever confirmed to be smear-free as well?

A really high-end capture would be spectacular. I've just been wanting a copy of my own to watch on the CRT because as much work has gone into Harmy's de-specialized I can't shake my preference for this look.

Damn, I'm going to start sending those mint marks to sellers again...

That would be really weird if they weren't smear-free, since they're pre-THX and all...

The real question is if they're worth preserving, or if they're just the same transfer as the SWE and/or JSC. I think someone already said they were, but I can't really remember for certain.

I agree. I seriously doubt that there's any smear.

With that being said, I definitely think they're worth preserving, especially when you consider OTcom's interest in msycamore's Technidisc SWE ANH preservation...

Yeah, but ANH was a unique transfer. I'm not sure about the other two...but I guess we'll find out, one way or the other.

Yes, the SWE LD's are all free from DVNR. Like Asaki said, the Technidisc pressing of the first film happened to be from a different print than the other ones, that's what made it so unique. That isn't the case with the ESB and ROTJ SWE discs. But that doesn't make your project uninteresting in my book, I'm especially interested to see what quality you can get out of ANH though, as my capture was done using the combfilter of the LD player, the combfilter in the DVD recorder introduced motion smearing, that's why I avoided it.

Even if there's bigger and better things on the way, I don't think we should stop preserving old LD-transfers if there's improvements to be made.

Agreed.

Personally, I'm just interested in the best possible DVNR-free alternative to GOUT.

I hope so, too.

My Panasonic LX-900U won't be able to compete with a Pioneer HLD-X0 or X9, but the PQ is excellent and smear-free.

Also, "Mode 1" noise-reduction eliminates most drop-outs, but doesn't harm the picture at all, from what I'm told.

Look here: http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?p=26194#p26194

The 900 EXCELLS at reproducing shades of color that NTSC hates, like saturated lavenders and crimsons - and without streaking or flicker - I always leave my 900 set with the digital noise reduction in Mode 1 because it cleans up all discs without harming the picture on good discs in any way - with resolution charts and such, you can't even see that it's operating other than the lack of chroma or luma noise. Mode 2 of the DFNR gives a substantial amount of video NR, but damages diagonal resolution - on an interlaced set, you'd never see it - but on a progressive scan set, angled edges and such take on a stair stepped quanitized look due to the field correlation NR processing.
