My sister is a stupid drunk with an attitude problem and awful taste in EVERYTHING. Honestly, every time she opens her stupid mouth and makes one of her usual stupid, inane comments I feel like garrotting her.

I quite like inviting them in when I have the time.

They usually leave quite energised.

Every time they bark they shoot bees at you.

TheBoost said some time ago:

A School Board in Virginia voted a couple weeks back to remove the first Sherlock Holmes novel, "A Study In Scarlett" from the 6th grade reading list, because the book contains much that is anti-Mormon.

  1. Every single article I've found refers to the book as "banned." This is a lie. It is not in any way prohibited, not removed from the library, and in fact is still on the 8th grade reading list.
  2. Most articles make the dismissive claim that someone "decided" the book was "allegedly" offensive to Mormons. This is funny to me that anyone who defends literature doesn't even bother to read the book, which gives the Mormon's a supernatural-powered secret police that enforces child rape on pain of death. You can approve, disaprove, apoligize for, or explain away, but there's no denying that the novel is intentionally and clearly anti-Mormon.

I was thinking about this old discussion, because apparently Belgium courts decided that TinTin in the Congo is not racist, despite seeming pretty racist. Admittedly, I haven't read it.  I wasn't aware courts made those decisions, but what do I know about Belgies.

What got me thinking was that "TinTin in the Congo" and "A Study In Scarlet" are both early works of what would later be highly respected series, and in both cases the authors later regretted the works later in their careers.

I'm not for banning anything, but I'm curious; do you think the changing opinions of the work's creators are relevant in any way in the discussions of that work's merits or flaws?

Bingo's been changing his avatar rather frequently as of late, which means I have to change mine frequently as well.

How do you know that Dr. Bing Owings isn't simply altering your visual input, georgec?

An evil mastermind, he is.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

Well, the time is at hand. I don't even engage in most personal activities on this computer anymore because I still have a virus. I will not do anything money related and I altered all my passwords on clean computers. I thought I'd completely gotten everything, but clearly I have not, as Avast! keeps catching various .exe files trying to access a malware site out of the blue. Several scanners had caught nothing, but finally Sophos identified a new rootkit that it successfully removed to some extent, but not completely. I manually deleted the files, but I'm just tired of all this crap. I'm going to reinstall Windows and make a recovery disc right away. I have a lot of stuff I hope I can backup, but I worry about backing up the viruses as well. What a nightmare!

sounds like you need better virus protection software.

for all I know, they will get counseling.   I could be wrong, but I think the boy is already in counseling.    Both my sister-in-law and her sister are social workers.   They both are responsible and love both those kids and their mother.   If something needs to be done, I trust they'd do it.    I am also willing to be both can't stand the husband.   Maybe the mother isn't filing the restraining order for the right reasons,  but she is filing it, and talking about divorce and getting sole custody of the kids.    I think the mother, unlike the father, has been sincere about getting her act together.     I think she thought the father was sincere as well.   Hopefully, she realizes that father wasn't and never will be.   I believe the mother loves her children, she may not always make the wisest or most responsible decisions, but I think she loves those kids.  I think as long as she does, in fact file the restraining order, divorce the husband and file for sole custody of the kids, I see no reason to interfere.   I am pretty sure if someone did need to be called,  my sister-in-law's sister would do it before I could.   She knows more about what is going on than I do.  When the kids were taking away before, she stepped up to the plate and got temporary custody of the kids and took great care of them.   She is caring and responsible.  So right now,  I will not interfere.   But if I feel I must, I will call DYFS.

well, I have an update, the mother, it seems, spent Christmas day with her husband.   Somehow, he got out of jail.   I don't know how.  According to my mom who read it on the mother's  facebook page,  She has forgiven her husband.   I don't know what is going to happen.   What is it going to take for that woman to realize her is husband is no good.    I have no idea what this means as far as the kids.  I do not know he will be allowed to see them or not.   I hope not.

Hardee har har, you sickos ;)  In reality, I have a feeling I got it on my quest to find rare digital Star Wars antiquities in less reputable places.  I had Avira antivirus, which was supposed to be the best of the freebies.  Never had a problem before.  Now I'm trying Avast!  While it has a slightly lower detection rate on some review sites, it seems (only in personal experience) to be better at active protection and catching/blocking viruses in the act.  So far I'm pleased.  But Sophos found something the others didn't.  It appears I've had some very stealthy stuff on the computer, so even now I don't trust it to allow me to do anything really important like banking.  That's why I'm going to reinstall Windows when I get the chance.

I used to have Norton.  It was such a pain to be honest.  If I were to go the paying route, I think I'd avoid anything from Symantec.  I've had some crummy times with that company.

Hmm...I've had Norton for two years and zero problems.  Had CA before that and it sucked.

Norton used to slow my old PC to a crawl before I removed it. (It was a real resource hog.) Been using AVG on my laptops ever since with few if any issues.

NoScript is also a handy broswer plug in to have if you go to dodgy suspicous websites often. It's a little paranoid until it you teach it which sites are kosher though.

Where were you in '77?

Indeed.  I had the same problem.  And when I tried to remove it, I experience the Great Computer Crash of Aught-Five.  Since then I've looked to various free resources to protect myself.

Never buy Norton. Frink is dead wrong with that. Norton is practically malware itself and won't ever do anything but take your money and slow your computer down; it's considered one of the bigger jokes in the PC world.

This is what any sane person uses.

If you have bigger problems than day-to-day care, MalWareBytes is where you go.

Flavia's Bones, I was around my cousin's wife's house over Christmas and her computer was moving at 0.48fps thanks to Norton and Internet Exploder.

Sadly I had already given out my Christmas Ubuntu startup disc and downloading another on her strangled connection was too much for me to do in one visit.

Maybe I'll sort it out around Easter.

Getting her onto Firefox was a step in the right direction though.

I've had no problems with MSE, yet somehow they failed AV testing and lost certification.
