I think collaborating on any project is just a plain stupid idea!
PS see my signature ;)
I’m quite busy nowadays, but I was inspired to start this thread after DJ/You_Too suspended their clean-up effort(s).
I think it would be a good idea to start a massive collaboration preservation project. The goal? Produce something better (and cleaner!) than GOUT.
There are 2,227 shots in GOUT ANH. Many of them can be replaced with better unmodified shots from, e.g., 97SE G’Kar. Some can be replaced with better shots from LD captures (e.g., intact starfields from Moth3r’s PAL THX set). Some can remain, basking in their wonderful GOUTiness.
Consistency can be painstakingly retained via adding grain, sharpening, softening, etc.
Quality Control can be implemented by having a few people at the top who are responsible for making the final decision.
I think this approach can yield excellent (and fast!) results, especially if there are perks for contributors.
What do YOU think?

What's the difference between this and Harmy's work? You need to differentiate yourself from the "competition".

Oh, the difference is significant.
1. No despecializing. Shots from, e.g., 97SE G'Kar won't be used if they require image editing in something like Photoshop to become "original". That is, we'd only include unmodified SE shots from pre-2004 sources.
2. No HD. The goal is to produce something better than GOUT, so it'd be above LD quality, but below DVD quality.
Basically, this would yield a better/cleaner GOUT from original sources.
This would not compete with Harmy's work at all.

Seriously, however, I think this could work very well.
If anyone's interested in participating, please (at least!) post something stating you are!

Ya know.....I mentioned something similar in another thread and it apparently wasn't appealing to people ..... probably because of the "idea" of competition without the word ever being sad.
The "competition" stigma is going to have to be thwarted before a project like this ever gets off the ground.
That being said....I don't know anything about color correction and clean up but I DO have some LD captures of the SE that might help yield something towards the cause. Also, with the teamwork of others, the DTS cinema audio is out there to be shared for ANY project that needs it.
That is all ....... :)
I tell it to you this way - I started myself a project VERY similar to this (using different sources for different shots). Then I started it again. And again. And again. And again .....
However if a reasonable amount of people is in, I would like to try it

I believe it! What the heck, could be fun, so count me in for whatever I can do to help.

Well, the collaboration thing will probably never work out.
However, I almost have IP reel #1 done of the GOUT + 97SE (TB) mix using all original (unaltered) shots, including wipes. Basically, I'm using GOUT to replace any shots not marked as V0 or V8 in this spreadsheet.
GOUT and 97SE (TB) are similar enough in quality for this to work. The benefit, of course, is that 97SE (TB) doesn't have the problems that GOUT has, such as DVNR-smear and "jaggies".
I really need a partner. Help?

AF, just sent you a PM on what I can do (if anything) to help. I agree with you about the jaggies, but the TB has even worse DVNR problems than the GOUT.

I know it's been degrained to hell, but does it actually have smearing resulting from temporal DVNR?

In some scenes it's worse than the GOUT and in some not. Check these comparisons, GOUT on top, TB on bottom:
Stars leaving trails:
Look at the detail on R2:
This one's self-explanatory!
Look at the wall lines in the background:
Another thing I noticed when doing this was that the 97 SE is more cropped than the GOUT on all sides except the bottom.
So, You_Too, do you think this project would be worthwhile?

I'd wait and see what negative1's team will bring us first. (And Disney if they're smart and want to make some money on us OT-fans!)
Though of course it's your decision since this was your idea. A nice idea.
I haven't compared ESB and ROTJ from the TB version with the GOUT though, but I can tell you that ROTJ has less resolution intact than the GOUT. It's blurred, horizontally or vertically, I don't remember.

This would only be for SW and TESB.
GOUT ROTJ is great!

Thanks. :)
I noticed the one with Han in the cantina when I worked on color correcting Mos Eisley in the TB version, but at that time I didn't realize it was worse than in the GOUT. Now that I saw you guys' posts here I thought such a comparison would be interesting and it did prove you right, at least in some scenes!
When it comes to motion smear, ESB '97 is generally much better than GOUT-ESB but everything is really.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Damn! This brings us back to square one!
I guess the question is: Is it worth it? Would anyone actually be interested in the result(s)?
