Princess Bride - What can I say, this movie is incredible. In a way, it really is a bit like the original Star Wars: a clever and funny tribute to old-fashioned adventure stories that doesn't take itself too seriously but doesn't wink at the camera much either. As a kid, it worked on face value, as an adult, you get that second pastiche layer. "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Dawn of the Dead 2004 - I remember walking into this in 2004 preparing to hate it but was surprised and impressed to find a decent film. While the original is still a classic, this is a watchable and sometimes very entertaining remake. I hadn't seen it since around 2006 and forgot how good it was in places. It's of course very flawed as well, but of all the mainstream zombie movies to come about in the last ten years this is one of the better ones.

Life in a Day - an interesting idea. Sometimes it feels like it is trying too hard to be profound with it's contrast of "life and death" (cattle at a slaughterhouse, babies at a hospital), but it would be a bit hard to avoid that in a concept like this. Worth watching for the novelty. Not great but I enjoyed it.

Gojira (Godzilla) (1954)

Fantastic! Best of all the Godzilla films.  Very well made for the type of film it was.

8 trampled villagers out of 10!

Raymond Burr inserts or no Raymond Burr inserts? ;)

That would be Godzilla King of the Monsters, 1956. :p

I stand corrected.

Pinky and the Brain once did a Godzilla send up, with totally random cutaways to Raymond Burr, that I couldn't properly explain to others why it was so damn funny.

Saw the trailer for that last night - looks kinda in the style of Forrest Gump / Slumdog Millionaire - average person goes on an incredible adventure.

It does looks stunning, though. Might try see it in 3d if available.

Also saw two different trailers for Les Miserables - it looks interesting but I just don't know about Russell Crowe in there..

and after what seemed like an eternity of TV adverts on the bigscreen I finally saw Skyfall. I kept forgetting it was out til some friends dragged me along.

I feel like Casino is always going to be my favourite Bond by a long shot. I just love everything about it - so any other is judged against it.

[I'm also one of the 5 people who enjoyed QOS]

Skyfall felt a bit uneven at the start but they managed to shoehorn in a lot of fun moments. There were a few cliches they could have done without. overall.

3 Balls. I'm tempted to deduct a ball for the theme song, but I guess it's comparable to the other films.

Stargate (1994)

It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. It was quite a lot of fun actually. I did kinda cringe at the whole ancient aliens thing but overall it was pretty good.

I liked David Arnold's score for it too, and I loved that the version of it I saw wasn't DNR'd or imperfections eliminated in any way.

3 balls out of 5.

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

So me and my lady friend watched this after we saw Twilight: Breaking Wind part 2 (The only good bit in that film coming from Michael Sheen's deliciously hammy performance in that film). THIS is a vampire film.

It's interesting that while both Twilight and Interview bear quite a few similarities Interview does things right where Twilight does them wrong. It shows the characters in a real world context, what their existence actually entails, and who these people appear to be both on the outside and who they are inside.. Twilight however does this in a extremely skewed and twisted Romance novel-y type way. In Interview the film knows that Tom Cruise's character is not particularly nice, but in Twilight the film fails to realise that Edward is a complete creep.

3 balls out of 5.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Reaaaaaaaal good. I love the scruffiness of it, the music, the performances and humour.

5 balls out of 5.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003)

Better than I thought it would be. I'm not fond of the melding of CGI and Traditional Animation (or CGI and any other form of animation in general) It not as good as Prince of Egypt or Road to El Dorado but it's still quite good.

3 balls out of 5.

Stargate?

Yes. Specifically, the season 8 finale of Stargate SG-1, a two-part episode entitled "Moebius."

Bah! That's not true Stargate! That a piss-poor piece of afterbirth spawned from the belly of a parody series that turned to shit after its fifth season!

Scrooged (1988)

So I realized today that it had been a while since I sat down to watch a movie. For whatever reason, I picked Scrooged. I'd only seen one scene of the film before and was not prepared at all for that opening. The film was filled with lots of surprises like that, Danny Elfman...Karen Allen... It felt very uneven, including an adaption of A Christmas Carol in the middle of it contributes a lot to that. Definitely not one of Bill Murray's best. It's...passable.

I dare anyone not to laugh at "The Night The Reindeer Died". That should have been a real tv movie. ;)

As far as unusual takes on A Christmas Carol go, it's one of the best. And there have been several of those over the decades.

My fondest memory of seeing this in a theater was the Batman trailer in front of it. There was no title screen, just the stylized Bat logo. As the trailer ended, these two ladies a row or two in front me exclaimed, "What's the name of the movie?" >_<

I feel ... like dancing. On the head of a pin. Before a crowd of reverse vampires.

Witness (1985)

Saw this in a packed house back in the day.

The old drowning in a grain silo had been done before but Harrison and Kelly sizzle in this.

KKvG holds a very special nostalgic place in my heart.  It was shown every thanksgiving during the 1970's in the New York area.  I can't help but love it.

"War of the Gargantuas" (1966)  5/10

Their final fight was quite disturbing.

I always thought vs Kong was one of the best of the sequels. When I was a kid it held a special place with my friends who watched the films with me. I would say it's as good as vs Gigan and vs Ghidorah, and I would consider those among the better films (Gigan uses lots of stock footage, but I consider that more like a 'best of' sort of episode).

I am not looking forward to the next few installments in the Godzilla series. G vs. The Sea Monster, and the films with Baby Godzilla are not on my favorites list. But I will still view them, as I have not seen them in years. Is Godzilla vs. Gigan the one where Godzilla talks?

I should have said that I watched the English versions this time through, and plan to re-watch them all again in their original Japanese versions.  Some of the voice overs in the early films are down right raciest.
