Quick question for owners of the anamorphic version of the original trilogy. Does your ROTJ not display the THX trailer and the time/chapter info on the front of your dvd player while the movie is playing? I just got this set (thanks digitalfreaknyc) and the first two movies show this info, but ROTJ doesnt? Thanks.
So yours does that too? Thought it might've been a problem with my burn but I'd already deleted the torrent and didn't want to re-download it. Must be a problem with the torrent. And the timecode problem doesn't occur on some DVD players I've noticed, but it does on I believe all Toshibas that I've tried. It's not that much of a problem really, you can still skip chapters, the only problem is you don't know how long the movie's been going on. Hmm.

@ MBJ -

That was just a color-correction of the shot you posted here. I'm thinking about getting a Mac since they're supposed to be better with video editing, for my "home" movies (I've made a couple indie movies myself with an 8mm camcorder and have never been very happy with the way they captured and turned out), and if and when I do I'll start my own coversion project, but for now I'm happy with the anamorphic set.

"Have you done a compare of the footage through your card vs through your camcorder just out of interest?"

Not really. I can already see the differences just in the codec alone.

"If you like I will send you a bootleg DVD for nuffin so you can compare your results to what is already out there."

Well, I still want to send you mine, so you can hear the 5.1 and see how I incorporated the commentaries. I've just been holding off until I made a better version. We'll trade.

"It does look a little light compared to the LD"

Like I said, MPEG makes it darker, and I like the background details. Once I've finished this full compile (12 out of 24 hours so far), we'll see what improvements can be made at the next step.

BTW, just a little thing here. I found out that "null transform" will let me crop my AVI's, so I wanted to make two different sets. One set would be cropped 24fps, which turned out fine. The second set was supposed to be a cropped copy of the originals (still at 30 fps), but with the extra "false start" minutes edited out.

Using VirtualDubMod, on the "Frame Rate" tab, I clicked "No Change", but there's no apparent way to keep from taking off the "Progressive" tab. Now, the resulting 30 fps files, cropped and with several minutes of extra footage cut out, are 1/10 bigger , and are labelled "Progressive Order" in Vegas, rather than "Lower Field First" like my masters. What gives?

BTW, my 24fps cropped versions look perfect, but Vegas says they are 19 fps and progressive. Is this right?

Thanks, good to know that it's not a bad burn or anything. Does anyone have a version of Jedi that doesnt have this issue? It isn't a big deal, but was curious.

With the right colour correction tools you can get the sky black without loosing the other shadow detail (You correct only the area of the image in question, not the whole frame), its easy on my inferno, not so sure on the PC, although something like Discreet combustion should do the trick.
I know nothing of Vegas, and whether it is getting the frame rates right. PM me your details, and I'll send a disc off to you to compare.

To the guy with the 8mm camcorder, the problem is tour camcorder really. You really have to go DV, otherwise a MAC, a PC, an SGI workstation isn't really going to help. DV makes it sooo easy, and no qualtiy loss.

If you are into making short films, go get a basic DV camera with a decent lens, and an external mike option (all the other features are useless really) and yeah, grab a mac, an e-mac or ibook is a great deal and comes with everything you need to do pretty good edits right out of the box, and it just works every time..

Mebejedi, PM me, maybe I can set you up with a better set of tools?

Well, that would be a nice trick. Guess I'll have to poke around some more....ChainsawAsh, are you using something like Photoshop? What would you recommend to use on an AVI?

I use Combustion 3 on the Mac platform and its a superb bit of software highly recommend it.

If your thinking about doing alot of this sort of work try to budget for a powermac tower (dual cpu if possible) rather than the consumer imac or emacs.

If you need any advice or help with software let me know.

Well, I finished my initial compilation. With bitrates at 8/6, I got an MPEG of 5.6 GB's. That's fantastic! I could just drop the average, and probably get an MPEG under 4 GB's.

hey folks,

i dont know if i fully understand the anamorphic dvd player issue but heres my shot:

when you play an amorphic dvd on a normal tv set, the picture you see is actually "compressed" to fit the screen, so some of the resolution of the dvd is lost by the black lines showing at the top and bottom the screen, the black lines take up available lines of resolution. when you watch an anamorphic dvd an a widescreen set, the picture isnt compressed or tweaked in any way, it fits the screen using all the resolution that is encoded on the dvd, the picture is being displayed in its native format.

a dvd player playing a non anamorphic dvd without the black bars is actually scaling the image to fit right. this is the equivalent of say taking a 200 dpi image in photoshop and increasing the image to 300 dpi, the resolution "is" technically increased and may or may not look better depending on the situation, but this increase in resolution is artificial...

hows that, am i going in the right direction?

looks like the droids and ewoks animated cartoon series as well as the 2 live action ewoks movies are coming out on official DVD.

From the digitalbits.com:

We've got a short (but mostly sweet) post for you fans of Star Trek and Star Wars today.

First up, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox have officially announced that they'll be releasing a trio of much anticipated "double feature" DVDs on 11/23. Star Wars: Animated Adventures - Droids will include select episodes of the original 1985 Droids animated series edited into two feature-length films - The Pirates and the Princess and Treasures of the Hidden Planet (both 86 minutes). Star Wars: Animated Adventures - Ewoks will also include select episodes of the original 1985-87 Ewoks animated series edited into two feature films - The Haunted Village (88 minutes) and Tales from the Endor Woods (89 minutes). Also on 11/23, you'll get Star Wars: Ewok Adventures, which includes both live-action films from the 1980s - The Caravan of Courage and The Battle for Endor (both 95 minutes). All three of these DVDs will carry an SRP of $14.98. Unfortunately, I suspect MOST of you were hoping for the Droids and Ewoks animated series to be released complete with all the original episodes, but such is not to be (at least not this go-round). Here's a look at the cover art for all three titles...

The glowing reds (like R2's eye) seem WAY lower resolution than the rest of the image and the last parts of SW and ROTJ refuse to play. On my home theater system however, they play just fine (no resolution issues and no playback errors). It seems like a codec issue, but I thought there was only one MPEG-2 codec. I thought that was the whole point of MPEG--consistency. Anybody have any ideas?

there are DEFINITELY different mpeg2 codecs. also, if you have too many codecs installed, that can foul things up as well. i would remove all codecs, and then add only the ones you need, testing them all one at a time as you add them (to check compatibility w/already installed ones). i'm using powerdvd software; it comes with its own codec, and that plays the discs fine on my system.

That's odd ... I tried reinstalling everything (from a clean format of my harddrive) and I started with Cyberlink PowerDVD first, just to see. Did not work
