Boycott the 2004 OT SE DVD release - c'mon, you can do it

Hi,

You know, when consumers are unhappy with a companies choices, the strongest way to make their unhappiness known is to vote with their dollars. Petitions are great but if you have already gone out and pre-ordered the special edition DVD set, you are not doing anything to encourage Lucasfilm or Fox to release the original versions that we all obviously want to see. Don’t buy the DVD’s until they have the original releases on them. Write to Fox and Lucasfilm and let them know that you are not going to buy Star Wars DVD’s until the original, award winning, box office record setting versions are released. Unless you withhold your money from them, all the petition signing and letter writing we do will not get their attention. We are the Star Wars customer base and have some commercial power to wield if we show some solidarity. I have e-mailed this suggestion to every Star Wars geek I know and suggest you do the same to reach those that haven’t found this site.

I know you want all that extra geek stuff on the other discs, but you can get them from netflix to hold you over until the originals are released.

I look forward to seeing you all in line the day the original DVD set is released.

A boycott won't work. It can't work. The majority of people don't care. Me for example already have the DVDs preordered. Id give that only 5% of the people who would buy the DVDs would boycott them as a result of the lack of the original versions. Even thats an optimistic estimate.

How did you come across it?

You're quite right. I was thinking of buying a set 'cause you just know you're going to be able to scalp it after the release anyway.... but I couldn't bring myself to do it - because as you said it's throwing money in the wrong direction.

Part of me wants to know how you came upon this information. The other part wants to figure out if it's of any use to me. As for the boycott, both YourHums and Jimbo are correct. A boycott is the best way to show our disapproval. After all, whether Jimbo likes it or not, the SE wasn't supposed to be released on video, period. Wave after wave of SW fans, eager to see the films on the big screen in whatever form, gave Lucas the idea to release them in the first place. It was puplic ignorence then and it's puplic ignorence now. There are basically three camps.

Special Editionests - Prefer the Se. While some also like the O-OT, other dispise it as "inferior" and take perverse pleasure in tellin O-OTers that "it's dead".

O-OTers - the exact opposite. Believes that the untainted versions are the only true versions, though most don't mind the SE and would buy both.

The Ignorent Masses - The largest group. thousands of times in sze to the other two combined, their usual response to all of this is "There are TWO versions????????". People like my father couldn't tell which version they were watching anyway. And even if they can, they don't care.

That's it in a nutshell. In the end, the fate of SW is decided by people who see it as just another film. End of story.

LOLOLOL
WAS not commonly known. LOL!

Oh, that cracked me up!

I'm not sure that sending mail to Lucas' home address is appropriate, however funny and satisfying it might be. Business matters should be sent to his place of business. Sending them to his home is could be misconstrued as harrassment and therefore likely to be counterproductive.

I just pointed out in the other forum that if everyone who signed this petition refused to buy the DVD's, at about US$70 that comes to a loss in gross sales of over $4,200,000. That seems like a statistically significant amount of money. If everyone of us wrote a letter to Lucasfilm and sent an e-mail to Fox video, maybe they would do the math themselves. In fact, there are people on staff who's only job is to do the math. And even if they don't, we aren't any worse off than we were before. What do you have to loose?

Defeatist thinking leads only to defeat.

Id say that Special Editionists outnumber Originaltrilogyists by a very tiny margin. I agree that ignorant masses are probably 90% of all Star Wars fans.

So cancel that pre-order. I don't have any numbers to back this one up, but a 5% loss in sales is big money. A quick search just told me that Phantom Menace sold over 2.2 million copies its first week on the shelves. If the Special Edition boxed set does as well, and everyone who signed the petition, including you and me, doesn't buy it, that's a loss of about $7,700,000 in expected sales. If you let the folks whos job it is to get our money know that, if they do something different, they can have that seven million, they might do something to try and get it. If not, then wait untill the price has dropped or it shows up at Costco and buy it at a discount and you still win. If we win, you win. If we loose, you still win. You can't loose.

Don't preach to Jimbo, YourHums. He's a Special Editionest of nearly the worst kind(at least he's admited the value of releasing the O-OT). ^_^ It is too late for him. Still, a boycott is the most logical course of action, but the people who don't care anyway would pretty much render it pointless. I'm not buying the set, for what it's worth. I'll spend my 40 on KotOR II when it comes out. Then I'll be getting decent Star Wars.

George's personal mailing address....

I'd write a pleasant fan letter, telling how much joy he's given to me.
Then briefly mention the DVDs and how the originals aren't there.

Y'know, just stick it in along with a pleasant letter.

Hold off until the Trilogy comes out, though, Hal, and it'll sound more than innocent enough. It's a great idea, actually. I might join you in that.

I'm thinking of doing that as well, Luke, because the covers appear to say '1977,' '1980,' and '1983' on them. Just taking a look at the CG and Hayden Christensen in the movies would give enough proof that these clearly were not made nearly thirty years ago.

I'm thinking of submitting a question to the Jedi Council on the official site. What do you guys think of the question, and who should I direct the question to?

How does George Lucas rationalize making changes to his movies while speaking out against alterations of other pieces of film heritage?

I can give you an answer right now...

What he was specifically speaking about was the colorization of the Three Stooges. They were shot in black and white, always meant to be seen in black and white, and the changes that are being done are not being done by the original director.

With Star Wars, he had always considered the originals rough cuts and always wanted to make them bigger, but had neither the time, technology nor money. Plus, they are his creations.

A better question would be asking why Lucas is ignoring a large amount of fans by not putting out the originals, or something of that nature.

I really would not bother submitting any. The last question they have answered is from March, and if they were to answer a question now, it would probably not be something of this nature.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

I know they wouldn't answer it, but I've just considered submitting a question anyway. I also noticed that it had been since March when they answered the last question. Kind of strange, since that was around the same time it was announced that only the SEs (or a hybrid thereof) were to released on DVD...coincidence?

I think the entire company is under the spell of Lucas, kind of like Rohan in the Two Towers.

LOL!!! You might go to jail, but it's going to be so funny...

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

i do see how we could go to jail over that?
we're just making him a backup copy... we're not profitting by it in any sort of way....

I think a better idea is one posted in the general discussion forum. Buying a few sheets of avery labels and making stickers saying Don't Buy Star Wars DVDs - Not The Original Trilogy or some such message and put them up near the local video store. Don't put them up ON the local video store or IN the local video store. That can really get you busted for vandalism.

Anyone that thinks a boycott can't work, put your money where your mouth is and boycott. Just to prove me wrong.

Remember that the point is to let people know that don't already.

If I didn't know crap about versions of Star Wars, and say someone protesting saying "Star Wars DVDs Not Original" I'd probably think they are talking about Star Wars being a rip off of a different movie.
Be clear in what you're saying on these buttons or stickers.
