Hmm... That doesnt seem to make sense, given that in alien resurrection, which takes place 200 years AFTER Alien 3, they had to clone Ripley 7 times before they even got it right. As for him being a descendant, he looks too much like the character in AVP to be one. All that aside, I think it's fair to say that AVP completely fucked up the continuity of the Alien series.

The reason why they had to clone Ripley 7 times in order to get it right (and I believe this is explained in the film) was the combination of alien and human DNA involved. As for descendants not being the spitting image of their forefathers, I've seen several examples of children and grandchildren who look just like their parents or grandparents.
