Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983) 7.5/10 - I like to consider myself almost a Monty Python fanatic. That means I think they're the funniest thing ever, but I've only seen Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and a handful of Flying Circus episodes. It's a problem. I tried to alleviate that by watching this. I was a little disappointed. It's still outrageously funny, but its clear their best jokes were behind them. To top it off, many of the sketches ran a little too long. Still great fun, though.

I think if you go into it cold, not expecting a return to the sketch format of the show, it can throw you off a bit. (It was also horribly censored when it ran on cable tv.) The Mr. Creosote scene was ahead of it's time, and outraged a lot of people. Even though it may feel like the comedy equivalent of the Beatles' final concert, there's still many bits of brilliance.

I cherish my HD DVD copy, and hope we get a Blu Ray before the grim reaper crashes my dinner party. Or chased off a cliff by topless women.

"Christmas in Heaven" ought to be a holiday standard, dammit! And who knew Graham Chapman could sing like that?

"And Now For Something Completely Different", their very first film consisting of tv sketches redone for the big screen, is also worth seeking out.

Scream, Scream 2, Scream 3, Scream 4.

1st one was entertaining but the sequels just got worse and worse.

I'll never understand how that movie got three sequels. The original was fine for what it was, but it didn't warrant any sequels, especially sequels following the same damn character over-and-over again.

If I remember, the third one was okay if you looked at it as a dark comedy instead of a horror film.

I watched the Keanu Reeves-produced and narrated documentary Side By Side last night. It was fantastic. Plenty of interviews with directors, cinematographers, and other industry figures on the merits of digital vs film, and where the future lies. Compelling arguments by both sides.

You can imagine who one of the biggest proponents of digital was (rhyme with Ducas). And he had good points, about being able to review footage immediately instead of waiting for dailies to find out something ruined the shot, not having to handle all the film strips, etc. On the flip side others contended that the emphasis on the image on set meant less attention to performances.

There was one very telling comment from James Cameron, who said something along the lines of: "After the success of Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, and How to Train Your Dragon, we showed there was a market for 3D." I found this to be interesting because he didn't really mention storytelling opportunities (or perhaps he did and it wasn't included). But it kind of went along with how many feel that things like 3D are just empty marketing gimmicks.

I think it's great that some directors can choose to use film and others can use digital. Soderbergh talked about how during filming Che, they didn't have to carry so much heavy film equipment through the hot, dense jungles. Just their hand helds and a few other things.

The documentary seemed to be making a small plea to not let film die completely. I'm not sure what's projected for the future, but I hope both forms of filmmaking can coexist.

Highly recommended. I think many people on here would enjoy it.

Hehe, I remember seeing it broadcast on NBC in the '70's. It was hosted by John Belushi in a Godzilla costume! Doubt anyone could get away with that today, without incurring the wrath of Toho's trigger happy legal department.

The MST3K version is essential viewing.

Most sequels at least try to change things up a bit by changing the leads, focusing on new characters, etc. The Scream franchise, as far as I know, does none of these things (haven't seen Scream 4, so I can't comment on that one).

Wait.... actually, what sequels are you watching?  Manon de la Source?
