The interior of Leia's ship is really bright, with white walls, white smoke, and white armored stormtroopers. This looks cool, but also lets the blaster bolts really stand out.
... and Darth Vader.
Yeah, you're basically blasted by whiteness the whole scene and then suddenly, pow, Darth Vader strides in as this huge contrasting dark presence with the fanfare and you know exactly who the bad guy is.
"Star Wars" is shot so simply, and yet in no way unsophisticated.
Nowadays this sequence would have had lens flares, and high contrast, over exposed lighting, and 3x as many cuts. There would have been a huge rack-focus shot as Vader came through the door in slo-mo.
Unfortunately, and ironically, Star Wars kinda helped to set that precedent of big effects-laden scenes. People in the industry missed the point, or at least took away the wrong message.
For me, the iconic shots of the OT, and Star Wars especially, will always outshine even the most technically-impressive shots of today.
