Help on New Hope opening scene Cinematography

Author
Time

Hey guys, I'm a freshman in high school for my film class, and im doing a report on cinematography for the opening scene of a New Hope. So far I've gotten down symbolism and height differences, and characterization, but I need more info, such as lighting. Could you guys please help me with this. Please just give me some extra information from the ship scene to where Leia gets shot down. Thanks guys! It will mean a lot! Stay JEDI!- John

Well, the small plucky ship being overwhelmed by the enormous monolith of the star destroyer pretty much lays out the Rebel/Empire dichotomy.

The white, faceless, inhuman Stormtroopers vs the nervous and human crewmembers, who get closeups to emphasise their humanity.

How far do you define the Opening Scene as going?

The interior of Leia's ship is really bright, with white walls, white smoke, and white armored stormtroopers. This looks cool, but also lets the blaster bolts really stand out.

Will the opening crawl be considered in your assessment of the opening scene?

Oh, and, STAY JEDI! ;)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Thanks guys for the help! Oh and the scene is from the Tantive IV getting chased until Princess Leia gets shot down by the lazer blast

Yeah, you're basically blasted by whiteness the whole scene and then suddenly, pow, Darth Vader strides in as this huge contrasting dark presence with the fanfare and you know exactly who the bad guy is.

"Star Wars" is shot so simply, and yet in no way unsophisticated.

Nowadays this sequence would have had lens flares, and high contrast, over exposed lighting, and 3x as many cuts. There would have been a huge rack-focus shot as Vader came through the door in slo-mo.

Unfortunately, and ironically, Star Wars kinda helped to set that precedent of big effects-laden scenes. People in the industry missed the point, or at least took away the wrong message.

For me, the iconic shots of the OT, and Star Wars especially, will always outshine even the most technically-impressive shots of today.

You can tell that this :

is from the same director as this :

Which was a much more talented director with a much better eye than the director who did this:

People say that Lucas wasn't really responsible for the success of the Star Wars trilogy and it was other people that pulled it through.  I disagree, I think George Lucas was very much behind all of it.  ESB by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan should actually read By George Lucas, revisions by Lawrence Kasdan because Lucas inserted many of the things we love about ESBHe had taste back then.  THX, American Graffit, and Star Wars are all cut from the same cloth and the cloth was called TALENT.

Seeing Jar-Jar in that number makes me think would he have been more acceptable voiced by an old lady?
