One of my major gripes with the current releases is the lightsaber replacement. The originals are beautiful. I certainly hope they do nothing with them except reinstate the originals.

That said, I'm not fundamentally opposed to improving the film if it actually *improves* the film rather than simply changing or even degrading it for no reason. There are a lot of the original effects that just don't fly. The original mos eisley escape being a notable one. That's one of the few CGI scenes from the special edition I really enjoy.
The new mos eisley reveal shot also is quite beautiful, and is another of my special edition favorites. It's clearer and much more realistic than the original muddy image.

If those were the only kind of "improvements" made to the film, I wouldn't mind. Although the unaltered versions should of course be an option no matter what.
