Current evidence suggests otherwise.
Uh, yes, sure, uh-huh.
CASINO ROYALE didn't knock my socks off, though seeing DC in the role was fun.
QOS (serious and prosaic) and MOONRAKER (silly and far-out) were at the opposite ends of the spectrum. Some great sequences.
SKYFALL went off the spectrum on it's own tangent. From Bond to Bourne to IPCRESS FILES. I liked it alot. Everyone did a great job.
Was gonna see Skyfall tonight, but plans changed. Lame.

I never really got the Bond series. They are okay movies, I like some of them and have seen almost all of them, but I would put them in the same category as Michael Bay films, some of which I also enjoy in the same sort of dumb, comic-book sort of way. I just never got why people go ga-ga over Bond while condemning similarly stupid films to hell. Half the Bond films aren't worth watching, and of the other half that are, only half of that are really good, so that's like.....6 out of 22? Casino Royale looked like a really good film but when I finally saw it I found it to be only better-than-average. I dunno, Bond has just never excited me. Decent films, worth watching, just nothing special. I look forward to seeing Skyfall since it's supposed to be great, but I'm really only expecting something above-average, and I will definitely be waiting for home video. I only see one or two films a month, including repertoire cinemas, and my money has better places to go.
End unpopular Bond rant.

I think as with Star Wars in 1977, you simply had to be there. Bond was daring and new in the 60's. It pushed boundaries for sex and violence in an era when movie censors still often ruled with an iron fist.
Decades of imitators and spoofs have eroded the cultural impact of the early films a little. Lots of people would laugh at a sinister villain like Blofeld because of Austin Powers today.
I first saw Dr. No on tv circa 1976, and as a little kid it was really exciting. It was all shiny new stuff to me. I fear seeing Ursula Andress coming out of the water triggered early puberty though. ;)
Where were you in '77?
When I think of Bond there's only one thing that comes to mind.
That stupid Klobb.

Skyfall (2012) 9.5/10 - Saw this a couple weeks ago and have been letting it marinate in my mind. This is a great film, one of Bond's best. There's not much to say that's not already been said. Great characters/performances, story, locations, score - every thing you want in a Bond film. And the cinematography - gorgeous. There's a lot to love here. I personally think the last third is nearly perfect. The SPOILER choice to kill M was I, think, a good one. I'm glad they've been building up M's maternal relationship to Bond in the two previous films. I think it makes this the most emotional Bond film. END SPOILERS So, yeah, it was great. It had quite a few plot holes, but, who cares really?
The Descendants (2011) 9.5/10 - Quality film. Great performances. Quite downbeat, but that's okay.
50/50 (2011) 9/10 - Most of the same sentiments as above. Except this one's rather funny. And a bit uplifting. I would highly recommend it.
My Left Foot (1989) 8.5/10 - I wanted to see Daniel Day-Lewis' first Best Actor winning performance. It didn't disappoint. Pretty good film too. Little disjointed, but still good.
Lincoln (2012) 10/10 - Saw this last night. Very impressed. Spielberg has proved yet again that he is still one of the greatest directors working today. And DDL proves that he IS the greatest actor working today. His performance is absolutely outstanding. He IS the 16th President. The rest of the (all star) cast gives great performances as well, most notably Tommy Lee Jones. The film is quite wordy, and does not move at a fast pace, but that's okay. It's interesting, informative, funny, and most of all entertaining. The script is brilliant to. It only really follows Lincoln for two different months in his life (Jan. and April 1865), but you really get to see every aspect of his character. Honestly, an exceptional film. Hope to see it up for a lot of awards this Oscar season. It deserves them. Highly recommended.

The fictional spy is our modern day equivalent of the escapist adventurer, or at least Bond is that way. The films and novels broke taboos when originally released, but over time the films began to simply want to create credible plotboilers that were credibly made. This really started when the Broccoli-Saltzman partnership broke up in 1974/75 and reared its head first fully on For Your Eyes Only. Compound this with the loss over time of the essential original crew members.
There are 10 to 15 great films with some being merely good, 1 interesting compromised experiment (LTK), the troubled Brosnans, the Craig abominations, and the two unoffcials.
But they are always intelligent and well crafted ('till 2006), which is why I think the Michael Bay comparison is absolutely unjustified.
To each their own, but I am the guy who's thesis was on 007. Not obsessed...;)

Yeah, but the difference is I'm sure you've met other people who don't care for Bond.

I thought that was a movie about twooffour/Easterhay.
Suspiria (1977) - 5/10
Body Bags (1993) - 6/10
House of the Long Shadows (1983) - 4.9/10
The Vault of Horror (1973) - 5.5/10
Not everybody "gets" or likes Star Wars either, and that's okay...
...except when it's someone in your family of course. ;)

I'm not sure I've seen DuracellEnergizer give a film above a 6/10 rating in this thread.
I'd love to see a list of films Duracell would give a 9 or 10. :)
Heaven's Gate
Can't figure out what I thought of it. Certainly a good movie, but I'm not sure if it's great. I can see where criticisms came from when it was released, but I like how the film takes the conventions of Western films, as well as common notions about the American frontier, and flips them on their head. The film has some underlying themes that are just as relevant today.
What do others think of this film?

I liked the 19th century rollerderby music scene. :p
The rest of the movie had great scenes, great sets, actors and locations, but terrible pacing and ran too long, even when it was two and a half hours. It was just too unfocused, whether in the short or long version.
That's kind of how I feel. Great scenes, good acting (other than the main female lead, she was awful and all her lines were monotone), and beautiful cinematography.
But the script just feels like it should have been sharpened more. I understand Cimino wrote it himself, and maybe he pulled a Lucas by not going through enough revisions.
I wouldn't say it's a beautiful mess. It's more a beautiful, underwritten script.
