The worst prints are release prints. Contrary to popular belief, release prints are crap and have at best the equivalent of 720p in terms of spatial resolution when projected. The chemical process smears the resolution due to uneven gate speeds. Then you got dirt and damage on top of that.

What is this, I don't even...

How did they think a "chemical process" smears the film?? Uneven gate speeds? That would never happen, but if it did, that would lead to jumped frames, not resolution problems. What a moron.

I agree. He most definitely is a moron.

He's almost as bad as those people who claim that GOUT is the best possible preservation due to "70s film limitations".

WTF

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Maybe he's referring to generation loss when creating a theatrical print. I don't know about the chemical process of creating a print but I know that there is negative -> interpositive -> internegative -> theatrical print. Except Mike Verta said the technicolor IB prints of SW were printed straight from the negative itself.

That said, I think comparing a theatrical print to 720p digital resolution is a bit weird. But this guy at least thinks the originals should be preserved.

The other guy you're referring to is obi-rob-kenobi-4 AKA Sifo-Dyas. That guy calls us haters just because we love the originals.

I just can't figure out where these people are coming from. It's like they don't understand how film works - things "pre-digital" aren't automatically junk. Think about huge, 70mm productions like Laurence of Arabia or 2001: A Space Odyssey and how clear they are - wait, I guess those suffered from '60s and '70s film limitations. Nevermind. :)

That's exactly what it's like, because that's what it is :)

How many of these know-it-all-alls have even seen a  movie projector up close, or handled a reel of film?

Never trust anyone who doesn't know how to thread a projector. ;)

Hey people,

Looks like we've been getting some good responses, and most of the issues have been worked out with the blog.

We have a lot of good upcoming posts about audio, comparison clips, and a LOT of information about the screening of the print. This will be very important because we will have an accurate reference of what the scan looks like compared to an actual projection. Yes, it would be nice to have an IB Tech lying around, but even with that as a reference, it's still not as accurate as projecting it, and observing the colors.

We will have a lot more about the differences, contrast and comparisons of them. And of course a lot more previews and sample clips for members.

We hope to have the general admission starting up soon.

In the meantime, if you're a new member at OT, and have only just joined or haven't posted much. You might want to increase your count, and post a message in this thread on some of your star wars background, and why you want to join. Otherwise, we won't know who you are. The people that post more, and have been on this board longer will get the first preference for being admitted.

Thanks again for your support.

Exactly. If you haven't worked in or know anything about a theater, distribution, or exhibition you shouldn't even be in the industry. Never had to lug around big fully loaded shockproof reel cases, or fix sync, or get so bored you swapped a reel of The Lake House with X-Men 3 have you Mr. TFN 720p sir?

Thanks for the update.

Hello everyone,

Get ready for a cool weekend. We've got some major going on's and will have some interesting updates coming soon. Especially about the private screening that was held.

Also our newest member, none, should be getting up to speed, and ready to talk about his experiences.

Finally, we are gearing up for the open invitations. (NOT YET THOUGH!).

I expect the invite to go live around sunday. That's what we're aiming for.

Thanks for your patience, and see you there.

Every time I read one of these project updates, I'm amazed all over again that such significant preservation efforts are actually happening.  I joined this site back in the X0 Project days, but eventually drifted away and figured that the GOUT was the best we were ever going to get.  Projects like this one have brought me back and made me hopeful about Star Wars again.  This project in particular is a real bright spot for fan preservation and something I never thought I'd see.  I can't wait to read and see more of it on your blog if I get an invite, and I will continue to follow the progress here regardless.  I'm just happy knowing that Star Wars is alive again!

Well, I guess I should introduce myself, seeings I am somewhat new to this whole Star Wars preservation thing.

I am an old Star Wars fan from 1977. I saw the movie in a theater in Grand Rapids, MI in June/July of 1977 and immediately loved it. I am also one of those guys who remembers certain aspects of the film, but not everything...like Luke throwing the grappling hook twice.

There are certain things in 'other preservations' that I don't believe are 'correct' and I'd like to be able to offer my theatrical knowledge, to help this project create the proper look that the movie had in the theaters in the summer of '77.

I'm hoping to be able to join in with the discussion here pretty soon, so I can give my input and or advice.

Best to you all,

dlvh

Hi everyone,

And hello to the new people here. If you a recent member to OT in the last couple of months. A post like the one above is all it takes to for us to notice you.

It would help your cause if you haven't posted much otherwise we won't know who you are.

Preference will be given to those that are involved in projects, those that have contributed material, made commentary, and have been trying to be involved in this board.

Only half the people that were on the blog last time have responded, and even some people that have joined up now haven't made a comment yet. So if you are just wanting to lurk, and wait for the final product you will be able to keep up with details in this thread.

If you want to participate, and get a lot more details and information and join up. Then let us know who you are.

Would definitely love to check the blog out, I've been a member for a year or so and have been checking in on this project in the 35mm crazy proposal thread. Very exciting times for Star Wars fans, lots of good projects in the works!  Keep it up team, your efforts are very much appreciated!

I sent a reply to your email, BTW, re: username. I've just been being patient though and assuming you'll get to it in time (sounds like tomorrow?) and that it did not get lost in cyberspace.

Back when the unaltered Movies were shown, I wasn't born yet. However, I still grew up with the originals on VHS-Tapes. (It's not that I hate the special editions, but there are still many changes which I disagree with.) My brothers used to watch the unaltered Star Wars movies with me many times and they used to play X-Wing and TIE Fighter with me. (I still play them nowadays) We love Star Wars.

Since the originals are part of my childhood, too and since I disagree with many of the changes and the refusal to officially restore and release the originals, I strongly support this project.

I don't have much experience with movie preservation yet (except digitizing VHS-Tapes on PCs) but I'm willing to learn new things.

And since there are Star Wars fans in many different countries and even ones who are hard of hearing or deaf, it would be nice to have different language audiotracks and subtitles. So I'm willing to contribute the german audiotrack and the subtitles from my GOUT-DVD once it is decided to include them in this project, too. (I've done some research on how to extract subtitles and audiotracks from DVDs)
