Fanny and Alexander (1982) - 10/10

I absolutely loved the 5-hour edit of Ingmar Bergman's last feature film. I watched it in 4 parts over 3 nights. One of the greatest entertainment experiences of my life. I was so sad to see it end, if only it had lasted another few hours!

Watching Fanny and Alexander every holiday season will be a new tradition in my family.

Wow! Is that an official gunbarrel shot?

Where were you in '77?

Just something somebody put on reddit with all the Bond actors.

“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”

That should have been in the movie. Would have been a nice touch for the 50th.

Dang, that's awesome.

Easy A

Was actually really good. Really smart, and thoroughly enjoyable Emma Stone is fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiineeee.

The film contains loads of references to The Scarlet Letter, the book (which I've read) and two screen adaptations (The 1926 version, which I saw at uni, It's Awesome, and the 1995 version starring Gary Oldman and Demi Moore , which sucks balls,... and not in a good way... as a Brit it was physically painful to hear Demi Moore's "English accent")

Easy A also has references to 80s John Hughes films, of which I have never seen before (I've seen things like Baby's Day out *shudder* and Home Alone) so this movie made me want to seek them out. Needless to say, I was thoroughly entertained by them. I watched them with my lady friend who hasn't seen any John Hughes movies, period.

I could only rent out two DVDs from my uni library because I have a bunch of books that I already have out and I only have a limited amount of stuff to take out.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

A real good sweet, warm-hearted comedy. Maybe it's because I didn't grow up with it, but I sympathised a lot more with the adult characters than maybe I should've done. I also didn't particularly like the Ferris Bueller character very much, I know he was supposed to be cool and 'rad' for skipping school, but having gone through that phase myself in my life it really bothered me.

The Breakfast Club

Damn. Now this is a really really good movie, I can't believe I've never seen this film before (which is odd considering how much I dig 80s movies.). And now I'm all depressed because although I know the ending is uplifting or whatever, I will never be able to write something as good as this.

:(

Spoilers

How come Brian didn't get a girl in the end? The other two guys did. Doesn't seem particularly fair. If the point of the story was to break down stereotypes, then perhaps it would have been better for the geek to hook up with one of the girls, most likely Allison, and for the jock to stay single. And why did Allison need a makeover at the end anyway? I thought she looked better before the makeover.

End of 27 year old spoilers

Does not compute. John Hughes is the 80's.

Complaints about Ferris and Blues in this thread?

Lock it immediately, it serves no valid purpose.

Sairen aka Forbidden Siren (2006).

One of those rarities, a film based on a computer game that isn't utter bobbins.

Yui Ichickawa looks like a Japanese Noomi Rapace.

It has a nice Wicker Man (original not the beemake) feel to the opening sections.

Sadly the ending is a bit weak and the gimmicks of the game (being able to see through the eyes of others, non-linear story telling etc) weren't carried over to the film so it does play out as a rather mild entry to the Asian horror stable despite it's positive aspects.

3 Centispiders.

Salvage (2009).

I'm lucky to not be a soap fan so the purpose built cul-de-sac requisitioned for this Liverpudlian horror film previously home to Brookside didn't jar for me.

Sadly the film didn't really click for me either.

It's an admirable piece in some ways because it's tightly filmed and edited.

It makes it's micro budget stretch quite a distance too.

It just lacks a real purpose.

It was as if the makers wanted to put a showreel of horror/thriller tropes and just flung a War On Terror/Broken Britain blanket over it.

Considering the location it would have made the ideal WTF soap storyline though.

2 Balls.

Evil of Frankenstein (1964)

Messy, but still somehow maintains some of the Hammer dignity. The continuity and events of the first two films are thrown out, the Monster is back with terrible makeup and serves no real purpose, the sets and production are uninspired, the plot is completely uninspired and because a deal had been struck with Universal seems to have been cobbled together from the worst Universal sequels. Even the interesting points or subplots aren't developed in any sense so they are quickly forgotten. Freddie Francis helms this one and like his Dracula Has Risen From the Grave, the visual look is striking, close and rather gritty combined with a grittier and dingier looking setting but with a story that is completely lacking.

The only reason to sit through this is for Cushing, who is as always fantastic. The conviction, weariness and sheer helplessness he puts into the line "Why? Why won't they leave me alone?" is the finest part of the film.
Personally I write this off as a one-off much like the abysmal Scars of Dracula is for the Dracula Hammer cycle.

2.5 balls out of 4 drunken hypnotists with a lust for glory who inadvertently obtain full control over Frankenstein's creation. (and yes, they somehow make even this boring and mundane.)

Not that I was complaining, mind you. I just gave it an unpopular rating.

You would rate Blue Brothers higher had you seen the  sequel, Blues Brothers 2000.

One of the worst movies i have ever seen.  I am surprised it even got theatrically released and not just straight to tv and video.

Come on, it wasn't THAT bad. It had some catchy tunes and some fun dialogue.

It is the second best feature film with the words Blues and Brothers next to each other in the title, starring Dan Aykroyd, yet made.

I did see Blues Brothers 2000, once, back in 2001, and I recall liking it a lot. Suffice it to say, though, that means absolutely nothing since I liked a lot of stuff back then that I don't anymore, and vice-versa.
