Excellent work, Harmy!

I'm looking forward to seeing more of v2.1!

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Just so you understand, the screenshots aren't indicators of any overall change - they are specific shot that were fixed. Here's a brief explanation of those chages:

1) Changed the color of the letters very slightly to be less green.

2) Improved the blown out whites and god rid of the pink tint that somehow got into that shot. There is one more very brief shot from the same angle, which got fixed as well.

3) In v2.0 the whole window is put in from GOUT. In v2.1, I superimposed the module in from the HD SE footage, while keeping it's original placement, in order to gain some extra detail (you can see this quite clearly when you view the picture at full resolution)

4) I toned down the green in the shadows, because it was a bit too much in v2.0.

In other news, I was working on reel 2 and I set out to darken the Luke meets Obi-Wan scene but having compared it to the IB Print scan again, I decided to keep it the way it is in v2.0, because darkening it a bit just made it look worse (and less faithfull to the IB Print) and I don't want to rework the colors from scratch and give the scene a totally different look, because I want to keep the look it has on the IB Print.

And I'm still confident I can get v2.1 done before Christmas.

I for one am glad you are keeping this scene the way it was in 2.0, although it a bright scene and i know some people wanted it changed to how they remember it with colours, but i have the same opinion that you should not change the look from the IB print shots you have been working from.

Great work with the changes so far :)

Hi Harmy,

I wanted to first echo the post from a couple of pages back congratulating you on the fantastic job you're doing (and have already done) here. I finally watched the trilogy for the first time in a long time without cringing at all the changes that have been made and I was finally able to share these movies with my wife. With a child on the way, I expect that your versions will be the ones that I share with him when he's old enough as well.

Now for some minor feedback:

- If at all possible, PLEASE keep future releases as .mkv formats. The .m2ts files in the ACVHD package caused me no end of trouble because I needed to play them with subtitles and VLC doesn't like putting subs up when .m2ts files are playing. I know, it's my fault for getting a mac... I ended up watching both ESB and RotJ on a six-year-old laptop running Windows XP.

- Your cleanups of the special effects are tremendous. My wife noticed nothing, my friend noticed nothing, only by paying careful attention was I able to spot elements that felt "not quite right". I'm sure you've already got your hands full with your plans for continuing improvements, but if I could suggest the following scenes as deserving of extra attention...

[Edited as per suggestion below]

Sorry for posting about RotJ in a thread about SW.

Again, awesome work, Harmy. Thank you for all your hard work!

angryboy: Harmy typically prefers "bug" reports to be done via PM, as reading them may destroy the magic for future viewers.

With that being said, is what you listed for SW (ANH) for v1.0 or v2.0? I compared the v2.0 Dewback shot in question to both PS78 and GOUT and I didn't notice any difference between them.

There is a CGI-looking (but, really, not CGI!) Dewback just outside of the Mos Eisley Cantina in the OOT.

Thanks for the tip. I've edited my comment to remove the things I was talking about.

To be honest, I was merely pointing out the (very few) instances where I felt the recompositing stood out enough to jar me out of my movie-watching trance. I watched the movies a lot when I was younger but have certainly not watched them often since the special editions made their debuts and wasn't really questioning the "authenticity" of the shots because I don't have the knowledge (any longer) to make me an authority. Nonetheless, I noticed a couple of places (in Jedi in particular) where Harmy must have made choices that while not reverting to the originals were simply "a good choice" in terms of making the picture look good while getting rid of as much of the special edition crap as possible and I'm in favor of that in general.

The version of SW I watched was version 2.0. It was truly magical.

2.1 is looking good!  In the 2nd screenshot you can see more details on the escape pod since it's not blown out now.  In addition to the reduced green, the 4th screenshot looks more natural without that digital harshness.  I'm hoping this new render gets rid of the compression artifacts by the stormtrooper's head when Vader enters the Tantive IV and some of the shots in the droid sale scene.  Can't wait for the new version.

I haven't visited these forums in a long time. First, when I heard about the blu ray changes coming, I discovered this place, and found the dark_jedi v3 DVD info out there. At the time, this seemed like my best option for a simple transfer for ease of playback etc. but I didn't find any simple HD options (I may not have looked hard enough).

This looks fantastic. Been examining lots of the screenshots, which describe some immense amounts of work on all this. Incredible. Unbelievable. Awesome.

Currently getting v2, and the "AVCHD" versions of ESB/ROTJ.

Maybe I missed this, but is there any other version out there? The first one is a much larger mkv (v2), and the rest are in AVCHD format? I would think all three would have same release format, at least for consistency, but perhaps not? Just looking for any clarification on the available renditions to be sure to get the best ones.

My original 2006 DVDs are nice to have, but I am immensely thankful for projects which have taken things to the next level and made these films so much more enjoyable on modern equipment. Thank you all for the incredible work in making this possible. When I first saw the list of sources for this "despecialized" version, I was in disbelief. Truly a massive undertaking. Please don't rush 2.1, I'm sure it'll be well worth the wait!

...itching to see these soon... cannot wait to settle in to a "movie night" with these new renditions. Can't say thank you enough - thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

Harmy isn't done with v2.0 of the two sequels, so you're probably getting v2.0 of SW and v1.0 of TESB and ROTJ.

That's kind of what I gathered, but wasn't quite sure, as I've been reading through things and trying to catch up with all of it.

Thank you for the info - this will still most definitely be quite a feat to experience even the "1.0" versions of these.

Extremely exciting to see all the work done here. I can't wait to see it all in motion :D

Hey Harmy,

On the new Yavin IV takeoff shot you posted, the colors of the sky look a little "uneven", like it was pasted together from different pieces.

Otherwise, keep up the great work!

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Harmy,

You know I'm a big fan, and I also think you are a very reasonable person. I would like to request that you reconsider your position of limiting criticism of your work in PMs only. I realize that you would like to keep the magic alive for those that don't notice the very few small problems that exist, but to ask that we don't discuss it at all is a form of censorship that goes against what everyone here strives for. Ultimately it keeps us from the goal of attaining a truely high-quality version of the movies we all love and remember by artifically creating the sense that we are already there. (IMHO, you have put us really darn close).

Maybe a second thread could be created for suggestions for improvements? Or, just make this a free-for-all. 99% of the people that comment are still going to be in pure admiration of your work as a whole. And, you don't have to respond to each criticism if you don't want to.

Again, this is just one person's suggestion, and ultimately I will respect your wishes.

Keep up the GREAT work! Those last screenshots are great improvements!

Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm sorry. Feel free to criticize openly, guys. I promise not to shout you down. I was a bit on edge around the time of the release, because of my exams, so I overreacted sometimes and thinking back, I feel like an ass.

Author

No need to apologize, Harmy. But I think it makes sense to let this be a free-for-all. After all, the average person is not going to read through this whole thread, so will miss any specific 'criticisms'. And the die-hards that do read this whole thread will probably have their own opinions about the choices you've made in terms of color and source material, so any version will appear to be a compromise to them.

Author

 (Edited)

Well, the thing is that it wasn't so much about issues where it is a matter of opinion, like color or which particular source looks better, but issues that are indisputable imperfections which I'm unable to fix but most people won't notice them until they are told about them. And then you get into a situation, where I can't fix it anyway, so the criticism didn't have any positive effect on the project, but it did have a negative effect on the viewing experience of dozens of people.

But g-force's arguments convinced me that that isn't a sound enough reason to censor what people discuss in this thread.

Author

On the other hand it's hard to unsee something, most of the times I don't notice the little imperfections that others do.  Not that it would detract from my overall enjoyment of the movie, even 1.0 is so much better than the Blu in my opinion!

I really can't wait to get home and check these out. Not going to lie, I'm probably going to have to give a small review, but will wait for any full critique until the 2.1 is final.

Couple questions - First, I've been skimming this thread a lot, trying to catch up, and it's just been incredible to read all the bits and pieces. Can't wait for "2.1" to be finalized! Incredible to see some of the differences even between 1.0 and 2.0. Excellent that you have done all of this Harmy, just excellent work all around! I'm sure that "just watching it" will totally blow me away... I'm also really hopeful to show this to my girlfriend, who claims not to have seen Star Wars in ages. THIS would be the version to view, IMO.

Ok, questions - first, I got an edition that is "Fixed_DeEdv2.0" - do I still need to mess with audio? I'm familiar with mkvmerge, so no problem if audio needs to be re-muxed.

Second - regarding avchd... I hate to ask, but if someone would be so kind as to pm a spleen invite my direction, it'd be very appreciated.. would LOVE to be able to watch this at a friend's house who has a nice setup, but for which MKV might be troublesome.
- - - - Edit - - - nevermind... found my way to "teh" other place and got all that sorted.. wouldn't mind an invite I guess, but no rush ;)

Currently found what I did on n e w s groups, which, THANK YOU to whoever put what they did on there! Just can't seem to find that darn AVCHD version (for SW 2.0 anyway).

Regarding the pictures for 2.1

I'm very happy you're adressing the green-tint in some of the shots, since the green really became quite distracting in 2.0!

Keep up the good work!

Yes.
The uploader (not me) simply renamed the files, adding the word "Fixed" in front,
in order to fool his news-posting software which had aborted on the first upload attempt.
To make the software start fresh, he renamed everything.
They're exactly the same RAR files he got from tehP, just renamed.
At that time the audio error hadn't been reported yet.

At my favorite binsearch engine I typed "AVCHD" in a.b.starwars and it popped up #1 search result.
Says it require password. Is it same as tehP? I'm not sure.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…
