It's a shame.  If I were in charge of the new Star Wars movies, one of my objectives would be to make them look like the old movies.  Make them look like they came from that era.  Like, literally, do everything possible to get the same "vibe" from IV.  The graininess, the colors, models and real sets, pacing.  Future generations would think VII-IX were made right after IV-VI.

I'm not sure if it's nostalgia (I didn't see SW til the late 80s), or that the late-70s look and "feel" just perfectly suits the movies.

I think it's mostly the latter. That is, the look-and-feel really does best suit the movies.

With that being said, I think Disney would lose a big demographic if they were to go this route: preteens and teens, as this is the group that gets off the most on big, intrusive, ugly CGI spectacles.
