I hope you're not knocking Supershadow. Without him, I'd have one less source to steal ideas from.

Amazing that supershadow is still around.  His site used to have a disclaimer that it was all "made up for fun" because Lucasfilm finally went after him.  But I don't see the disclaimer up there now.

I read today that Lucas was auditioning writers and plotlines during that July to August development period for ep. 7.  So he wasn't even going off his old treatments.  He had no clue what ep. 7 was going to be or should be.

For some reason that makes me feel abit better, the idea of him stashing the plots for 30 years and lying about their existence really sucked.

I wonder if this deal with Disney actually includes "Star Wars" in its original form as apposed to "A new hope", you never know GL says that Star Wars was an unfinished film in which case may not actually be part of the Lucasfilm catalogue.

So first Pixar is sold to Disney, then Marvel and now Lucasfilm.

For a maverick filmmaker outside the studio system to sell his company to the studio system is like Luke joining the dark side.

This may signal the end of my being a general star wars fan and make me totally a oot purist.

I also suppose that it also means Indiana Jones V will also happen and Lucas is writing three star wars sequels, or at least writing the treatments.

God i don't have internet or power for like three days and after hurricane sandy, and Lucas goes nuts for real this time and sells star wars and Lucasfilm itself.

I feel like i have slipped through some portal into an alternate universe or the twilight zone.

And what the Hell happened to that live action tv series set between episodes 3 and 4 and there being no more star wars films.  I guess 4 billion is the price to change some ones mind.

I also suppose that means we will have like 14 seasons of the clone wars cartoon, because they want to make money of this thing.

Zahn interview and some EU background for the unwashed.  I'm glad Zahn's name is out in front of this.  Might help with some Thrawn\Mara\Karrde action.

I wish that the Zahn books would be adapted Anchorhead i really do but Lucas does not understand good drama.  He said in the empire 30th doc that nothing happens in that film and that they just stand around.

Kersh got star wars. He understood it was a fairy tale not science fiction.  And he understood the human element.  It does not surprise me that to this day Lucas still does not understand the impact of empire strikes back.

And since initially Jedi made more money Lucas thinks his instincts were right.

Make these movies cheaply and just good enough, they are like the old serials cop out became his manifesto.

Ultimately Lucas doesn't have to understand good drama.

If you take the basic themes character strikes and motifs of the PT you could still have made an exciting trilogy of films that fed into (not just parasitic on) the OT.

It needed a better writer, a better director and a better editor.

Without Lucas writing, editing and directing whatever he has in his treatment could still be manipulated into a great trilogy of Star Wars films.

If the new people are as bad as Lucas the ST will add no more pain to an already mangled series.

I don't see Zahn's books working as a film trilogy.

It's too long, the actors are too old and they shouldn't be changed and I've read it.

I want something new with Mark and Carrie playing the same characters only older.

If they are smart the writers will write the piece so it doesn't tread on the toes of EU fans but personally I don't mind if they do that much as long as the story is good.

I wouldn't want a new SW film to be an adaptation of an EU book.

And I must say, if Mark Hamill is back my emthusiasm for this project will skyrocket. (and I'm sure Disney knows this)

I know.  We were all in shock.

Star Wars is such a big part of what made me who I am, and my whole life I thought it was Episodes 1-6.  So this was really disorienting- my whole frame of reference is gone.

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

i'm not worried or shocked at all.

i was sad after episode 6 ended.

now with the news about 7, and 8 and 9 too.

it's the best that could happen to star wars for me.

i always wanted more to come out, and this is

perfect for that reason.

ratpack1961: It doesn't necessarily mean he didn't have treatments, but all those details have to be filled in now and a full script written. And if they want to have Episode VII ready for 2015, they have no time for delays, so getting a writer involved to help makes sense.

As to the live action tv series, I'm rather annoyed. Haven't they been working on that for like 2 years at least? Don't they have at least a few episodes filmed and ready by now? There were so many possibilities with the story during this time period, plus getting to see more of Vader and Boba Fett and maybe Obi-Wan and so on, and now we get nothing?

As far as the Clone Wars cartoon series, it's been surprisingly good, and so if they have an extra couple seasons, I don't mind. And more of Count Dooku is always a good thing. :)

negative1: I was hoping for more at the time, as well. I just wish Lucas had done it back then, a few years after Return of the Jedi. Now we're liable to get some modern hollywood contaminated version. But I guess we'll see, I'm trying to remain positive, but am concerned how it will turn out.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Everybody is so pessimistic here! I'm actually quite suprised I didn't find a feast here celebrating the good news that George Lucas is - finally! - out of the picture, so some good Star Wars movies may come. Ever since I've seen all the prequels and found them an utterly constrained and disgusting patchwork, I've thought that some of the fans - the most intelligent layer of the fans - could pull together better screenplays, better ideas, better everything, and if someone in power would let them work on it, there could be hundred times better movies than the prequels were.

Up to this point, it seemed impossible to happen. I thought Lucas won't do sequels and even if he would, they would be just as bad as the prequels, and he won't ever allow anybody else to do a Star Wars movie. But now that he sold the rights, there's a chance that the new movie would be made by people who are actually fans of the original trilogy and see every problems with the prequels and smart enough to avoid them. Actually I'm worried that Lucas is still hired as creative consultant. Cleary he told all his original ideas with the first three movies.

I'm not worried at all that the reputation of Star Wars will be degraded further; the new movies will be better than George's uninspired patchwork. This is GOOD NEWS guys! :)

(As for releasing the OT, I don't think we can expect anything good, I guess George made sure in the contract that he doesn't want it to be released.)

for most people,

it's better to have very low expectations,

and that way you can be pleasantly surprised

if they're good, or say 'i told you so' if they're not,

but not be too disappointed either.

i prefer to be neutral, leaning slightly towards

optimistic.

but i'm not like a lot of the fortune tellers here

that can predict the future, and know what's going

to happen before something actually come out.

i avoided ALL spoilers for the ALL the prequels

and was fine.  i'll do the same for the new postquels

(if that's a word?)... and avoid any major spoilers

as much as possible for these too.

But this is Disney right.  They did not exactly handle Edgar Rice Burroughs or CS Lewis works in a good way.

They did not mess up the Avengers, but i count that a minor miracle and mostly because of Whedon.

But with their real franchise being Marvel projects like Avengers 2 where does star wars fit in?

Disney are also known for revision and rewriting history and altering their films. In some cases for good reasons like removing racism, in others just idiocy and political correctness.

On the other hand they give Pixar a lot of creative leeway, and respect the films of studio ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki.  They did not get in the way of Whedon on Avengers or  Stanton on John Carter.  But they probably should have on John Carter.

Maybe Lucas has a contract with them that allows him to choose a director or writer, or have ultimate say in things. If not why sell Lucasfilm.  As far as i know they were not in financial trouble like after Lucas divorce or Howard the Duck which is probably why those star wars prequels were made.

More star wars films really is not a concern unless it further buries the oot.

As it is i only watch star wars, empire and Jedi.  And the Indiana Jones trilogy there is no new star wars trilogy or Indy 4.

So even if these 3 new movies are utter shit i still have six good movies in the indiana jones and star wars trilogies  Six good movies and seven ones that are shit is not a bad ratio.

If Lucasfilm was hurting financially after Howard, it doesn't seem to have affected Willow getting made. Plus, you're talking a over a decade before Episode One even went into production.

Only if it was to force a title change to something like John Carter and a Princess of Mars. It had a bad title but the film was great. Mostly the film suffered from a criminally poor publicity campaign.

I found John Carter mediocre, both as a film generally and as an adaptation of the books.

At times it was as flimsy as the PT

Well I will say I didn't care for how they changed the Therns. But the overall feel of Mars, the character designs, the pace and action were excellent. Certainly better than sitting around in a space senate hearing.

It's too bad Brian Daley is no longer with us. He had a good grasp on the SW universe.

Alan Dean Foster is still around.

Good points.

Game: bring in Larry Kasdan

Set: re-open the ILM garage/parking lot

Match: See if SW fan named Mr. Scott is available. Now there's some possibilities.

I dunno about everybody.

I feel like the general consensus has gone from initial shock, surprise, and maybe a little dismay to one of very cautious optimism; don't forget we've been burned several times before with the special edition, one bad prequel after another, the special edition becoming the regular edition, more special editions, the disappointment of the failed GOUT, and finally a Blu-Ray that seemed to forgo fixing all the old errors in favour of adding in more changes.

Every time in the past we collectively got our hopes up, only to have them dashed. The GOUT was the last straw, so with the Blu-Ray we learned to regard everything with a very wary eye, and we were proven correct that time. This time I would say the overall feeling is to go in expecting nothing, but hoping for the best.

As for the Live Action TV Show, I feel like this Disney/Lucasfilm deal has been in the works for a long time now and might have something to do with the postponing of the show. If budget concerns were the only problem, I don't know if there's a company with more money and more TV experience than Disney (considering they own ABC especially), so it's entirely possible that Disney will be taking the reins there and moving ahead with Star Wars TV.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

END OF LINE

I didn't forget. That's what George did to you, single-handedly. And now he's gone. That's why I don't understand your initial reaction. Mine was pleasure. There was no hope for anything Star Wars-related while George was in charge. From this point on, things only can get better.

BTW, for a few things that has already been mentioned. I thought the new Star Trek was great. After I watched I immediately thought that the Star Wars prequels should've been at least as good as this.

Indiana Jones 4: it wasn't really good, but wasn't as bad as most hardcore fan says. While the SW prequels seemed just made-for-money and such, they really tried to make IJ4 right. They brought back the original characters, they've made the script rewritten a hundred times and took ten years to finish, they've tried to repeat and rethink everything that was good in the Last Crusade, they've tried to top the Holy Grail-theme etc. They "just" didn't succeed, but you can tell they've tried everything. The sad thing is, it was the creative decisions where it went wrong. Because Lucas and Spielberg are so giant they're not walking on Earth anymore, don't take advices from anyone, don't trust anyone and probably noone even dare to tell them they're doing something wrong. No wonder none of them made good movies in the last 10 years.
