We all owe to George lucas the love of Star wars he IS the maker, he changes cinema for ever, he will be always "the Chosen one" who makes us dream, some of us (many) don't like what become to star wars..but it's his creation after all..George lucas is and always be a genius.

kevin smith, ben affleck, edgar wright, Duncan jones, one of these gentlemen should direct the next Star wars.

I don't want to stir up any debate but I'll throw myself onto some train tracks if Kevin Smith directs the next star wars.  What about Spielberg?  Ever since I was a kid in the 80's there've been rumors of him directing one.

Not a Kevin Smith fan? :-D

Not at all, though a lot of my friends are.  I haven't seen all of his movies, though I have seen most, but I guess I shouldn't rush to judgement.  Has he ever directed a movie that he hasn't written?  I guess you never know, I remember hearing that Peter Jackson was doing lord of the rings and thinking "Wha??  The meet the feebles guy?!"

Despite his many misses I think Spielberg would do a fine job, he seems to understand the sense of wonder that a star wars film needs.

I've seen many of his movies, but I'm not sure if he's ever directed one that he didn't write.

With that bring said, I think people are bringing him up because he's a big SW fan, like us. He understands what we, the fans (himself included), want from a SW movie.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

He was unknown in that he hadn't done any blockbusters but he was a respected and critically acclaimed director

I remember Carrie starting her diet and saying she wasn't sure if she would but she'd like to be able to wear the bikini again.  Kinda makes me think they have thought of bringing back cast members and this has been under wraps and moving forward for longer than we think.  Besides I've seen more of Mark Hamill this past year than I have since the last time the OT was released in theaters.

I dont think he hates the fans who desire to have the Original's back, it's the fact that if the Original films were to be re-scanned at the quality that restorers use now usually 4K (Recently Raiders of the Lost Ark) or 8K (Wizard of Oz), they would be incredibly superior to the scans that he made in the 90's that he has been using right up to now for the BD release, which were roughly 2K.

All the CG additions from the 97SE, the 2004DVD & the Horrific BD versions were all tooled at 2K to suit the canvas they were working on.....all this work would be very hard to reintegrate into a higher scan....it would mean starting again.

If it was me.....I'd probably do the same.....right I'm out of here,....Disney, good luck with that!

Just the money spent on the latest bunch of digital changes for blu-ray probably could have covered a good part of a proper and full restoration of the original untouched films. Many have stepped up to bat to offer their professional services. Certainly with the money they have spent since the SE first hit they could have surely done a proper new restoration. And since we are really only interested in the original untouched version, he wouldn't have to re-create all the SE CGI effects again, like what Start Trek: The Motion Picture is facing.

In the months before Disney announced it would acquire "Star Wars" studio Lucasfilm, several different screenwriters paid visits to Lucasfilm's Northern California compound to pitch George Lucas and his co-chair Kathleen Kennedy their ideas for the new live-action installment, the series' seventh, according to a person familiar with the talks who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about them. The screenwriters were pitching ideas for a new story, not ones adapted from existing "Star Wars" books.

The person did not reveal the identities of the people who had met with Lucas and Kennedy but said they were well-known screenwriters with experience creating big-budget Hollywood films. A spokeswoman for Lucasfilm on Wednesday did not return a call seeking comment.

Gawker's Magary compared his love for the franchise to "rooting for a sports team that never wins anything (or more accurately, a sports team that won three titles 30 years ago and hasn't won a game since)."

I'm 100% certain that any new films will be new stories, not from any existing books. People can just get that idea of their minds - they have already made this pretty obvious.

Yes but he wants his SE version to be the preferred version, he couldn't release a higher quality unaltered version, that would make his true vision of the movie redundant......I would say if there were plans to rescan the films again and release them unaltered he would want to redo the SE's first and give us the unaltered as a bonus disc. Thats his real reason for not giving us the originals.

Now with his grip loosening......who knows

I have been a longtime member here and have fought for years with you guys to get the OOT on DVD and eventually on BluRay. I still say that Disney acquiring the Star Wars franchise can be nothing but good news, as I believe we will see the OOT someday on BluRay.

As for Episode 7, I may suprise many here being a longtime PT basher, but I'm actually looking forward to the ST, and I'm going to try to enjoy it and STAY AWAY FROM THE INTERNET! I don't know if the movies will be good or bad, but I'm not going to go through another 3 movies battling people on our opinions of them. OT.com serves its purpose as it tries to get the OOT out on BluRay, but other SW boards are just toxic, IMO. I saw the battles on the internet usually disinegrate into childish fighting whether it be about SW, Batman, Spiderman or any Summer Blockbuster.

Even as a kid I never wanted the Prequels, but I always wanted the Sequel Trilogy. SW is what it is these days, so either a fan can embrace it with a grain of salt or ignore it.

It would be cool to see those flashy OT Imperial ships falling to bits and covered in in dings.

In a way it's a shame the Death Star was destroyed as it would look interesting covered in craters and battle scars.

I could see the Alliance using a lot of left over Imperial hardware with a new paint job. A star destroyer with a Rebel insignia painted on the hull perhaps?

That would instantly communicate how things have changed since ROTJ.

Im happy for Disney making the purchase in the hopes that we'll finally get a beautifully restored OOT on bluray.  Im not sure about the beginnings of an ST in 2015.  What the heck would it be about? I sure hope its in the hands of a competant, hard working, caring imaginitive director unlike the slug that gave the world jarjar binks and "yippee!"

Okay, take this one with a grain of salt.

Supposedly, some guy with a source that called the 3D theatrical re-release has some more information about the upcoming films. This point in particular caught my eye:

The movies from what I understand will adopt the Harry Potter model, and will be aggressively brought to the forefront of popular entertainment once again with consistent installments. This is just for starters though, especially for those who hold the original trilogy in high regard, they should be happy. You can expect lovingly restored prints of the original trilogy to surface in the near future. That's a no brainer. I along with the rest of the world want those movies in their original glory. Disney are all over that, believe me.

I *really* hope it's true, but until I hear it from Lucasfilm or at least a well-respected professional in this field or major review site or something, I'm going to try and not put much stock in it.

But if it is true, get Robert Harris on the project and make sure it's done to the very highest standards technically possible, with plenty of time given to allow for the most accurate and precise restoration of the film prints that can be done. No rush job, please. Then scan everything at 4k, or maybe 6k just to be sure, hehe. :) Oh, and lay off the DVNR (digital video noise reduction, for those few here that don't know) when the restored Star Wars trilogy DVD and Blu-ray sets come out. Leave the natural grain and fine detail intact. :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Just when it starts getting quiet around here.... ;-)

With Disney at the helm, I guess things won't be any WORSE than they currently are.

If Disney somehow manages to release the OOT, GL can maintain his distance from the idea & claim his hands are clean of the project.

Someone's getting a lot of website hits for posting that info from a "source".

Their claim of credibility is that they predicted 3D conversions of the saga and financing of a new movie trilogy 3 years ago. I've thought the same things for years, that eventually Lucas would finance a new set of movies but hand off the writing and directing primarily to other people.

It could all very well be true, but at this point it's just unconfirmed rumors.

Lucas is a strange one. On the one hand he is clearly a very generous man. He is a very intelligent businessman. I like his stance on the importance of education and his desire to help it improve any way he can. And he also has demonstrated in the past his desire to protect films so that future generations can enjoy them.

Yet then look at what he has done to the fans regarding the original trilogy.  You can't even catch the originals on tv anymore for crying out loud, since he won't allow it. Why does he have such hate for us all? Granted we have thrown a lot of hate his way over recent years. But much of that is because he's denying us the one thing we've been asking for since the dawn of DVD. Many of us were bitter, or have become bitter over the years, about the quality of the prequels. That cannot be undone. But I think we can all agree that if he had released this recent blu-ray collection with the original trilogy intact, as originally released, all would have been forgiven. Instead he's given us another reason to feel like he hates us.

Yeah, I was reflecting on the Duality of George Lucas tonight, myself.

It's really interesting, and I don't think I can name another person who is so universally loved and a cause of frustration for so many people at the same time.

I don't think most of us would say we hate the man (perhaps in a fit of rage over the latest change in the latest boxed set for the latest year), or that we wish him ill, especially in light of his charitable work and other such; in fact, from my time here and other, similar places, I feel like we all think he's a good man, and we are all grateful for creating something that is such a big part of our lives and film history, and it's because of those reasons that places like this, and things like the petition and all the fan vitriol exist.

But at the same time, I don't (personally) know a single person who is not also ridiculously frustrated by his insistent, admitted intentional suppression of the original versions of his films and apparent lack of concern about the quality of the prequels and therefore the "health" of his intellectual property. I don't know a single person who doesn't feel some sense of betrayal and anger and alienation at the whole fiasco, that an entire portion of their childhood is being destroyed and some feel it so deeply that they can't handle it and just renounce the entire franchise.

And, again at the same time, I don't know a single person who doesn't want to be able to go back to loving Lucas, patch things up, and hand him their hard-earned money for a copy of the unaltered original films and just be done with it all.

It really is an incredibly fascinating dichotomy.

Listen, I'm certainly bitter about Lucas' treatment of the OOT (and THX, which is also never coming out again), but the fact of the matter is, that's fiction. Giving that much money to charity is a very real thing, and he deserves full congratulations for giving to a good cause and those in need. I give him full credit for, and my hat is off.

I didn't mean anything inflammatory, I just find the relationship we all have with the man very interesting.

I believe he certainly deserves praise for all the good he's done with his money.
