Star Wars - Episode VII - FACTS IN TOP POST — Page 3

I'd like to see the Tales of the Jedi comics adapted for the screen, but only if they stay faithful to the comics, ie. no prequelisms, no "lightening up" the subject matter for the PG-or-lower crowd, etc. Knowing Disney, though, it'd be pointless to give my hopes up. Plus they'd go as cookie-cutter as possible and shoot it with a scrubbed digital look; TOTJ can only work properly if shot on film - preferably in an '80s style - with grain present.

As details continue to flood in regarding the just-announced Star Wars: Episode VII, EW managed to catch up with Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, who reveals that he was made aware of plans for a third trilogy last August.

"[George Lucas] asked Carrie [Fisher] and I to have lunch with him and we did," Hamill says, "I thought he was going to talk about either his retirement or the 'Star Wars' TV series that I’ve heard about — which I don’t think we were going to be involved in anyway, because that takes place between the prequels and the ones we were in and, if Luke were in them, he’d be anywhere from a toddler to a teenager so they’d get an age-appropriate actor — or the 3-D releases. So when he said, 'We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,” I was just gobsmacked. “What? Are you nuts?!” [Laughs]"

Although Hamill learned of the plans for more films, he was as surprised as anyone at the announcement of Lucasfilm being bought by Disney when he read about it online yesterday. He also doesn't know what involvement - if any - he'll have in future Star Wars films, but he remains optimistic as a fan.

"I can see both sides of it," he says. "Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and that’s the way it should be — and it’s great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material. It’s one of those things: people either just don’t care for it or are passionate about it. I guess that defines what cult movies are all about."

Hamill reiterates that Kathleen Kennedy will be handling a lot of the work on the new films, leaving Lucas to his newfound retirement and plans for a charitable educational foundation funded by the multi-billion dollar sale.

“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”

Wasn't it already said that Lucas was looking to get someone else to play Luke? I'd love to see Mark Hamill reprise the role, but if the rumors are true about the characters being in their 30's 40's tops it'd take some serious Tron-level effects to make it work. What's weird is that it's only been said about Mark Hamill specifically, and not the other two.

But more importantly, good for George for starting an education charity. I knew he'd pledged to give away half his fortune, but that particularly raises him up a bit in my book. He may lie about his legacy, but I'd never call him a bad person.

40 year old Luke.

Hmmm...

How about Shia Lebeouf in makeup?

Why would he have lunch with Carrie and Mark about the new movies if they have no involvement?  Just to give them a 'heads up'?

Carrie has done some script writing for George in the past.

Probably to gauge their interest.

Not to mention George probably relished seeing the look on their faces when he told them. :)

Has Carrie said anything publicly yet?

They have both been very quiet on their Twitter accounts.

I wouldn't mind a performance capture film that raises the bar in terms of realistic looks. That way even younger Ford/Hamill/Fisher/Williams would work... Billy Dee that is, not John :D

honestly I think their best option is to only have loose ties to the previous movies..... some brief cameos by the original cast scattered throughout (with their actual ages... set it 25 years later or so) .... but ultimately I think they should be primarily focusing on a new storyline and a new group of heroes.... progress things forward so they could expand with new stories in the future.. (and obviously they could always go backwards before the PT as well if they wanted to)

if they absolutely need a recurring character link to the other movies toss in R2 and 3PO as sidekicks on the new adventure.

Luke would make a good sith now that he is older.

Here's a better picture of Mark Hamill as a Sith:

I hope this isn't the new line up:

I think Luke, now basically grown into Obi-Wan, coming out of his quiet Yoda-like retirement, to help a band of heroes on some sort of andventure is the perfect hook.

That's definitely the way I'd go with it.

Even better if it was a HBO Band of Brothers style mini-series, so you can really develop the characters and what's happened in the years since ROTJ.

War does not make one great.

Remember when Obi-Wan altered the signal in RotS to warn any remaining Jedi to stay away from Coruscant?  Maybe an older Luke (having ensured stability in the New Republic) could embark on an adventure to find any Jedi that remain in hiding, with the ultimate aim of establishing a New Jedi Order.

I have a feeling that most of those Jedis would be fairly old by now.  Obi-Wan was relatively young when that happened.  Still sounds like a great premise for the movie though.

True.  But not all the Jedi are human.  Yoda, for example, was over 900 years old when he died.

Yea, that's true, and I guess they only need a few elders at first to start searching for new Jedi to train.

Throw in the remnants of the Imperial fleet as the main threat, and maybe even the Kyber crystal as a mcguffin, and I think you have a pretty good premise for a new trilogy.

Not to mention the conflicts within the Jedi once they find out they are trying to be recruited by a Skywalker!

Nice.

I think the ultimate aim of the new trilogy should be to bring the story full-circle and end with the Republic and Jedi Order in firm control of the galaxy once again.

It might be more interesting to see how winning a war isn't the happy ever after of myth.

The Old Republic has already been shown to be not the Utopia old Ben made it out to be so it would be interesting if the future the Rebels fought for didn't turn out to be so rosy either.

It's almost as if Ben's nostalgia and Luke's optimism in ANH are two rose tinted lenses pointing in opposite directions in time.

I would definitely prefer to see Leia go bad than Luke.

We need a strong female villain in the films and for it to be such an iconic character as Leia would carry (ahem) weight.

Carrie would love it too.

That was my favourite part of re-reading Zahn a couple of years ago.  It's perhaps more in the subtext, but I think the massive all controlling form of Government that the Empire was would be really hard to replace with something more "free" without total chaos coming in the wake.  Now, it's certainly less sexy than a rebellion, but it takes better men (and women and aliens) to remake the new government and satisfy the needs of the recently oppressed without somehow repeating the sins of the Empire.

However, I'm not sure it makes for good movie making.  :(

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!
