That's like saying "with all the money they make at the box office ($billion+) why bother making toys?"

The OOT is a niche as it is, the BR sales of the SEs prove it enough. They have no reason to go back to the OOT.

Yeah, they are definitely in no hurry to get them out there that's for sure, the updated versions has repeatedly proven to be a huge success, it worked in '97 and it worked in 2004 and it also worked last year. Even on this site where the majority is supposed to be mostly interested in the original trilogy, I'm sure about 90% bought the recent release. There's a market and a demand for the originals, yes, but it's nothing that's on a priority list especially when its creator doesn't want it to happen.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

One thing I've been wondering about is what this means to other in house Disney productions. Are they going to bother with a Tron Legacy sequel or that Black Hole remake now that they have Star Wars?

I have not read the NJO except for Vector Prime, and concur that it's a terrible idea, after thinking about it a bit more. Better for the EU to become a parallel universe or something. I like Joss but I don't think he's an appropriate choice at all. Hopefully they don't give it to Abrams, either. (I mean the 2009 'Star Trek' was pretty good and actually pretty 'Star Wars'-y but...I dunno. Something just doesn't seem right about that prospect. The tone? I dunno.)

JJ Abrams is committed to Star Trek though as not just the director of the new movies but also the person who gets to approve what is and isn't official Trek. So if they do offer the new Star Wars films to him he'd have to choose between control over the Star Trek franchise to do with what he pleases or just being a director on a film or three of something that he's been a fan of for a long time. Who knows maybe the amount of control he currently has over Star Trek may be enough for him to refuse directing the new Star Wars movies.

listening to George talk about his beloved franchise in purely monetary terms, revenues streams etc and about his retirement /handing over the reigns etc  maybe he has almost relaxed to the point where a restored GOUT would be seen as just another product or revenue stream that sat alongside the current incarnations of the 2 trilogies. its gotta be a more viable idea than 3d versions of the films.

on a side note there has been no mention of the Clone Wars series in the deal and what will happen with Lucasfilm's Animation Division, I hope Filoni and his crew are somehow involved in the new trilogy as IMHO their attention to detail has really brought the series into line with the ideals of the original STAR WARS than what they originally were given to work with.

I hope Disney does not dumb down the new episode and make it "childish" to cater for a potentially younger audience. The results could be something like the Holiday Special just with lots of gee whiz special effects. And if only one princess breaks into song then I'll be walking outa the cinema and demanding a refund!!!

it's really that good? beats the now-buried Tartakovsky version?

I can't get enough of it. Sure there are lame episodes and some questionable canon decisions, but by far and away it is a fantastic show that is everything the prequels should have been and more.

Yes, but when the suits and accountants get involved, it may boil down to which franchise will make the bigger pile of money and sell the most toys? ;)

I definitely don't think they would shelf Tron 3 because of acquiring Star Wars. They've already have enough invested into their Tron revival of sorts they did for Tron Legacy. It'd simply be bad business to let that investment stagnate and die before they got all the profit they could from it. I'd be more worried for remakes of things/new projects that are currently in the works. Those are the things that are likely to get delayed so that they could focus their funds into their newly acquired franchise.

Well of course Disney will want to make some home video money, but what will stop them from just re-releasing the SE's? The Blu-ray sold well and has proven that the overwhelming majority will not care if they get the originals or not. There really isn't much demand for the originals and it would cost more money to clean them up and restore them than it would to just reissue the SE's which are already ready. It's not like theres tons of extra money to be made by releasing the originals like some people seem to think. They could make just as much money by re-releasing the SE's, maybe more b/c they won't have to have the originals restored, so it seems very unlikely that this improves our chances of getting an official OUT release.

I disagree. Tons of people bought the blu-ray set. Why would they possibly want to purchase them again if not for something really special? Would anybody in here actually buy another blu-ray set just for maybe a couple new extras or different packaging?

Yet how many just on this site would buy the originals on blu-ray on day one? And not just this site. While probably the majority of people are mostly unaware that there have been so many drastic changes over the years to the films, a very large number of people are both aware and bitter about it, which is obvious from reading this news all over the web. That's a lot of people, all who would likely buy the originals if they were made available.

I agree with oldfan. On all the other sites where I've seen the news, the prevailing question at the end, and also in the comments, is: does this mean we'll finally get the original trilogy?

R.I.P Lucasfilm 1971-2012 :(

that's what happened to my Jorg Sacul action figures, when i heard the news...Today will be a day long remembered. It has seen the death of Lucasfilms, and will soon see the end of SW fan's childhood ...Sad...sad.

and all the expand universe stuff is not interesting at all, to see in films..seriously if there's some disney's good films from franchise (Avangers for exeeeeeeemple) they are all forgettable..and i'm pretty sur that the episodes 1,2,3 will be masterpieces compared to every new SW disney movie to come.

no more fox fanfare, no more lucafilm logo, no more darkness, more ewoks, more jar jar ear Mickey, and more princess leia SWHS songs...

lightning my lightsaber, cut my head off !!!! oh shitt i'm still waking

Btw : from what Simon pegg's movie is that ?

It is from a British TV series called "Spaced", which was directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, etc.) and co-stars Nick Frost.  The funniest thing about this scene to me is that, as far as I can figure, the first season may have been in production before Star Wars Episode 1 came out, during that time they were very positive about Star Wars but didn't use any actual sounds, music, or paraphernalia of Star Wars, but come season 2 (produced well after SW Episode 1) it seemed almost as if they got permission from Lucasfilm to reference and use Star Wars stuff more based on how positive the first season was toward Star Wars, but, of course, they were now jaded.  (How was that for a lengthy sentence?)  So, when the season starts, one of the characters has come back from a trip and asks what Simon Pegg's character has been up to, he says he had a few things to work through... with George Lucas, and they cut to the bonfire that you asked about (complete with Return of the Jedi music).  Here's a clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJlgpozN31s  and the Jar-Jar hate train doesn't stop there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUQfHRfX2o8

Thanks, That's really funny and ..so real for fans..i thing Simon pegg, Edgar wright should do to next trilogy they are true SW fans.

I remain mostly optimistic.

I wish that were true. There is always the possibility of "something worse".

And considering Disney have done this for only the one logical reason, that being bleed it dry for every last cent, then it's very possible.

I'm willing to bet, despite the backlash in 1999, they'll create a new JarJar-like character to make the little kiddies laugh, and bring in the cash.
I'm picturing something along the lines of those two border-line racist Autobots from the second film. Forget the names, they were ice-cream trucks or something.

Regardless, Fox still owns the OT, not Disney.

They dropped the cash for the first film. George, via banks, covered Empire and Jedi, but still used Fox to distribute.

New interview with Lucas biographer:

...Lucas was unlikely to turn to Mark Hamill, who played Luke in the original but whose performance left the director dissatisfied.

Because Lucas knows so much about quality acting and which actors are capable of it?

"Faster and more intense!" - Lucas
What a dickhead.

I loved Anthony Daniels response to this..."I don't think anybody could take a more intense 3PO"

I personally think Disney will focus entirely on new content for the next 8 years. New films in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Each will have its own home video release.

Then, in 2020 (assuming the distribution rights for the originals goes to Disney as I've read) they'll pull the others out of "the vault" amd release a 9 film box set with (hopefully) the unaltered restored OT as an added hook.

My apologies if this has been linked in here already.  As a non-Lucas Star Wars fan and huge Zahn nerd, my very first thought when they made the announcement was "They have to get Bryce Dallas Howard to play Mara".  ;-)

Most of us (and the rest of fandom) have been wondering what this means for the suddenly announced future films, the theatrical originals, why Lucas did this, etc, etc, and rightly so.

That said; I had to laugh when I logged on to Facebook yesterday and there was a post by Zahn saying Disney hasn't contacted him about the Thrawn Trilogy, but he would hop on a plane immediately if they wanted to talk.  Said he'd charter one personally if he had to.  ;-)

Nice to know I'm not the only one who would love to see EU, non-Lucas Star Wars.  This goes back to what Alex and I touched on several pages back.  Some people see this as a bad thing, some see it as a good thing.  Either way, one thing is certain.  Star Wars the entity just got a whole lot more interesting.

You forget that there's always something you could bait hungry fans with when it comes to Star Wars, what about the movies in 3D, more deleted scenes and outtakes, documentaries etc. the possibilities of extra material are endless when it comes to SW.

I'd love to be proven wrong but you basically see these false hopes year after year, in 2004 "when the 30th anniversary comes around there's simply no way they could miss an opportunity like that to cash in on the originals." in 2006 "they cannot possibly release 13 year old non-anamorpic transfers could they? that cannot be true, there's no way they would get away with a release of that kind" or 2010 "This time I don't think they have any choice but to include the originals, fool me once...", 2011 "the collars Will  be fixed" 2012....

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I liked the Vong.

The idea of living beings that are not connected to the Force is ignoring the most basic "rules" of Star Wars. The idea of an enemy coming from another galaxy opens a whole can of worms and is too far-fetched for me to accept. So is living spaceships and the like.

I'd stay away from most of the classics of science fiction and space opera if I were you then.

Can't see the correlation.

Most of the classics of science fiction and space opera have organic ships and intergalactic invasions in them at some point.

If you find these concepts far-fetched you will not enjoy those classics.

"And not just on this site." It mostly is just this site, I think. People on Internet forums aren't representative of the average person.

The average person doesn't buy two versions of the same film in the same home video format.

There are a largish number of people who would just pirate an OUT blu-ray.

However the sort of people who would want to see all the versions are more likely to be the sort of people who collect things anyway.

They would be the sort of people who would rather buy the home video release than illegally download it and these are the sort of people that home video distributors would be wise to court rather than piss off.

Disney understand this probably better than Lucas (the man) does.

I was in a supermarket yesterday and they had Star Wars figures based on the deleted scenes of Return Of The Jedi in there.

This is a supermarket in a small town in central Scotland but nowhere in the world can I buy a HD copy of the OUT.

It's just nuts.
