I have not read the NJO except for Vector Prime, and concur that it's a terrible idea, after thinking about it a bit more. Better for the EU to become a parallel universe or something. I like Joss but I don't think he's an appropriate choice at all. Hopefully they don't give it to Abrams, either. (I mean the 2009 'Star Trek' was pretty good and actually pretty 'Star Wars'-y but...I dunno. Something just doesn't seem right about that prospect. The tone? I dunno.)
JJ Abrams is committed to Star Trek though as not just the director of the new movies but also the person who gets to approve what is and isn't official Trek. So if they do offer the new Star Wars films to him he'd have to choose between control over the Star Trek franchise to do with what he pleases or just being a director on a film or three of something that he's been a fan of for a long time. Who knows maybe the amount of control he currently has over Star Trek may be enough for him to refuse directing the new Star Wars movies.
