"7 - 8 - 9 was written in 1975. Story is very dark."

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

Looks like the guys at RedLetterMedia will have even more of a frenzy on their hands in the following decade. Any thoughts on potential filmmakers/directors to helm where it's going from here or is that for another discussion?

Would you guys think that Fox could/would want to release the OOT before losing the rights to make money off from them one last time? Or do you think that we should wait till 2020 to see where we at?

Some news....

Disney does NOT NOT NOT own the previous 6 films. They only have the rights to future films and to the characters themselves. They cannot do anything with the older films.

I thought Fox owned Ep. 4 in perpetuity?? no?

So I don't think this is true. Fox owns the distribution rights, which will eventually expire, according to this. While originally Fox also owned the copyright to 'Star Wars', this was traded to Lucasfilm sometime in the late 90s, probably in the deal that netted Fox distribution rights to the prequels. And if you check out any 2000+ release of 'Star Wars', it will be (c) Lucasfilm, not 20th Century Fox. Zombie wrote an article about all this here.

New interview with Lucas biographer:

http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-post/star-wars-7-8-and-9-are-most-exciting-says-george-lucas-biographer-exclusive-63006

The next in the series, he said, involve Luke Skywalker in his 30s and 40s, but Lucas was unlikely to turn to Mark Hamill, who played Luke in the original but whose performance left the director dissatisfied.

Good thing Lucas went with better actors for his prequels.

Most people don't realize that the director has a HUGE impact on the actors performances.  With all the stories about how Lucas hardly even talked to the actors on set during SW, it's a wonder that the performances were as good as they were.  And Hamil gets a bad rap for SW, but the audience clearly bought into Luke Skywalker, and without him making Luke a believable character, it would not have been nearly the movie that it was.

And it's not that he hired bad actors for the prequels, it's just that he is that bad of a director.  He was an editor first, and he has even stated that the editing room is where he is comfortable and where he thinks the movie is really "made".

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

I have not read the NJO except for Vector Prime, and concur that it's a terrible idea, after thinking about it a bit more. Better for the EU to become a parallel universe or something. I like Joss but I don't think he's an appropriate choice at all. Hopefully they don't give it to Abrams, either. (I mean the 2009 'Star Trek' was pretty good and actually pretty 'Star Wars'-y but...I dunno. Something just doesn't seem right about that prospect. The tone? I dunno.)

Fixed it for you.

I agree with an above comment about RLM. Probably the only thing I care about here is that I get many more years of RLM reviews.

Dale Pollock is now claiming he's read story treatments for 12 films. I dunno what to believe anymore...

Maybe 5-25-77 will finally come out now?

Where were you in '77?

I wonder if this will prove to be the final blow which kills the Star Wars franchise or the saving grace which redeems it. Only time will time, I suppose. At the very least, I hope lightsaber colours beyond the plain ol' blue, red, and green will make decent appearances in the films to come.

I hope so but I'm kind of worried. He was doing a cross country promotional tour of the film but ran into some bad luck. On September 18th he made a blog post about how the brakes in the vehicle he was using were shot and that he needed help. He hasn't blogged since. =/

I'm not sure how to feel about this. :-/ Does Disney now own the rights to eps 1, 2 & 3?
Does this help our cause or hurt it?

I don't care at all about any future films. It will be just a further degradation of the franchise.

I think it helps. Fox always wants to put out the OT, dealing with anyone else will be easier than the brick wall.

Ok, so even after 2020, Fox still owns distribution of episode IV in perpetuity, doesn't that put the final nail in the idea that the special edition is a wholly new thing created in 1997?

I'm sure they would want to but like what's been said Fox only owns the distribution rights, Lucasfilm owns these films, that's why we are in this situation. Lucas is hell-bent on not getting his old films restored - everything is as usual in regards to the classics for now...

The recent event is great if you like to see new Star Wars films and merchandise, something I have completely zero interest in.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Unfortunately I feel you're correct. Am I old? No. Am I old according to the demographic they aim the Clone Wars cgi show to? Yep. Like you said, Lucas has long abandoned the original fans in favor of the younger demographic, so they can sell more new toys and action figures.

I seem to recall a movie that spun off tons of kid toys, costumes, cartoons, breakfast cereals, theme park rides, and comics and more toys. It had a cute beeping robot. a fun monkey man that was cool but totally superfluous to the plot in all ways, a charmingly chaste love triangle, only one up close death that was no only bloodless, but bodiless. That movie was called "Star Wars."

In "The Clone Wars" I've seen an insane mutilated cyborg living a tortured existence on a hell planet of endless burning garbage, the difficulties of being a regular soldier trying to survive, slave soldiers serving under racist commanders, including being ordered to murder their own friends, and a passionate forbidden marriage kept secret.

I'm not sure the demographics are as "old" or "young" as you simplify them.

Thank you for saying this.

I think the George Lucas of 1979/80 was a bit more unfiltered and less guarded than he is now. The whole book is an largely unvarnished look at ESB's production and where Lucas thought the saga was going. Even Carrie Fisher's drug problems are hinted at. For those reasons, I think it will remain forever out of print.

The new making of is actually even more unfiltered than Alan Arnold's superb book, I recommend Rinzler's book even if you own the old making of due to the great additional material. Rinzler got access to Alan Arnold's original tape recordings and his stories and interviews are more straightforward in some cases than what was allowed in print back then.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

That's like saying "with all the money they make at the box office ($billion+) why bother making toys?"

The OOT is a niche as it is, the BR sales of the SEs prove it enough. They have no reason to go back to the OOT.

Before anyone else mentions Joss Whedon's name in connection with Episode 7, might I just remind you that he's already set to direct a big budget sequel due for release in May 2015. It's called The Avengers 2.

This will also be the reason why Episode 7 wont be released in May 2015. Why would they put 2 of their big budget blockbusters in direct competition against each other?

I wouldn't expect to see this until November 2015 at the earliest & I doubt that is enough time to come up with a new Star Wars movie.

Wow.  This came out of left field.  I am surprised Lucas would sell Lucasfilm off, just like that.

Well of course Disney will want to make some home video money, but what will stop them from just re-releasing the SE's? The Blu-ray sold well and has proven that the overwhelming majority will not care if they get the originals or not. There really isn't much demand for the originals and it would cost more money to clean them up and restore them than it would to just reissue the SE's which are already ready. It's not like theres tons of extra money to be made by releasing the originals like some people seem to think. They could make just as much money by re-releasing the SE's, maybe more b/c they won't have to have the originals restored, so it seems very unlikely that this improves our chances of getting an official OUT release.
