I hated the idea that the bad guys were really 'justified' because they were so far-seeing. It also made the good guys a bunch of short sighted tools.
I loved both Serenity and Avengers, but to be fair Serenity was a pretty niche movie, and Avengers benefited from what has to be the single most elaborate build up and marketing plan in the history of film.
