Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years — Page 10

I think this could be a good thing if done well. But in my opinon disney is going about this in the wrong way. They should forget the 6 movies and just make movies set in the same universe but with diffrent charachters and ditch the episode numbering, For example , I think the old republic storylines would make a great film trilogy by itself, There is so much they could do, The whole mandalorian war the fight with the sith would make a great film. Fans would be happy with it also because it wont affect any of the 6 main movies. If they were doing a sequel to return of the jedi then they would have to most likely recast actors which a lot of people will probably hate because its wont fit in with the way the series is made

So disney could do this in a great way if they branch off of the 6 main movies and adapt other adventures instead of showing us what happens afterwards

Ouch, my balls have been kicked again by GL. I thought it was the last time after Ep. III. Now I have to deal with even further kidifying of Star Wars. Fuck you too George. At least you personally can do no further damage. Good riddance.

The thing about this is that it's incredibly abrupt. It's not surprising, it's just unexpected that it happened today, without any rumblings. A sucker-punch.

But in terms of is it good or bad or will it make the OOT get released? I don't think it changes much.

If you loved the prequels, you could cry foul because "it's George Lucas' baby." But then you would be naive. He didn't solely write ESB, ROTJ, AOTC, and unofficially ROTS, and he didn't direct ESB and ROTJ either. He also didn't have anything to do with 99% of the EU, and he's been pretty hands off with the biggest two SW projects of the last seven years, which is Force Unleashed series and Clone Wars series. But yeah, he had a bit of input, and he's continuing in that capacity as a creative consultant, and based off his treatment ideas. So he's still in the same capacity to a large degree.

If you hated the prequels then this is great news. The prequels were good ideas for movies that were crippled by George Lucas inability to write or direct. This could be the best thing to happen to the series since 1980, and to be honest the acting, writing and directing of stuff like CW and Force Unleashed is pretty well done. So, hey, this could be the prequels you wanted in the first place.

And in terms of the OOT, it would be jumping the gun to make any predictions. My own feeling is that this could be the best thing, because Disney has always been kind to its classics, has always marketed itself based on its legacy, and with Lucas out of the way--he's a creative consultant on the sequels, not on the companies business dealings--there's really nothing holding them back. But then, with 7, 8 and 9 coming REALLY FUCKING SOON, maybe the OOT will take a back burner because they will be concentrating on these new films right away. Or: maybe not. We were always going to get the OOT, it was just a matter of time. Does this move that timeframe up or push it back? 50/50. But I would say it moves it up.

As for the end of fan films this is jumping the gun. Disney is harsher than Lucasfilm in the legal department, yes, but LFL will still retain a level of autonomy, and their fan relations are to a large degree built upon a mutual relationship, whether it's the 501st or whatever. That seems unlikely to go away. Things may change a bit, but I think it's foolish to say this is the end of all that. At the very least, it's up in the air, but more likely it will just undergo a bit of modification when the new management takes over. But from a business perspective they have a great thing going and it doesn't need to change, unless they start losing money, but they won't, and with the new films and business plan they have nothing to worry about.

But the point is this isn't really surpring, this whole move seems downright predictable, but the abruptness of it has thrown us all. But when you really break it down, there is as much pros as cons, and things ought to more or less remain the same, because it's too early to say otherwise in any case.

My two cents.

I agree with you for the most part. I'm not too high or low on this news. Not surprised at all. Always expected Lucas to hand off the series to someone else for more movies.

But about Disney, during much of the 2000s didn't they have various moratoriums on their 90s classics? I think Beauty and the Beast was one that was unavailable for some time. Yes, I think they've released most of these films and done them justice (I feel like one of their releases might have had controversy or something). However, I recall a lot of waiting and waiting for them to release their movies on DVD and blu-ray. Obviously these releases/remasters/upgrades take time, but it always seemed like they shuffled their feet a bit.

I know what you mean about Disney being good to their classics, but at the same time I could see them just holding onto the UOT like bait on the fishing line. Gain the trust of the disenfranchised fans, sell them some products, keep them hopeful for the UOT, sell more products, rinse and repeat. The release could happen eventually, but we all know Disney will milk that as much as, if not more, than Lucas would have (or has done).

“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”

Well, at least there is now a chance, they might not release an OUT, but Lucas *definitely* wasn't going to.

I have no idea how they would pull that off. I can't imagine Harrison Ford wanting anything to do with Star Wars again. His career has done just fine without it and he's past all that now. Mark Hamil, maybe, he has appeared in many chessy sci-fi films over the years, so he may be interested if the script seems interesting enough to him and the timing is right. Carrie Fisher, I can't imagine her coming back for more. The thing is - how shall I put this gracefully - they have all aged.

What if they tried to pull it off as an animated film, like Polar Express or Final Fantasy:Spirits Within? Use the likeness of the main characters (with their permission of course) and have the film near photo-realistic. They could maybe convince them to provide the voices that way. That would also allow them to offer visuals that are boundless. Of course after Mars Needs Moms flopping, I'm not sure if Disney would want to do a motion-capture Star Wars, even though it wasn't the animators' faults.

Obviously though they are planning on a live-action film. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to accept anybody else playing Luke, Han and Leia.

Honestly, I'm really worried about the scores.  A Star Wars feature, live-action film without John Williams?  Unthinkable.

Aw, c'mon now - I'm sure Danny Elfman would be a great choice!

and all the expand universe stuff is not interesting at all, to see in films..seriously if there's some disney's good films from franchise (Avangers for exeeeeeeemple) they are all forgettable..and i'm pretty sur that the episodes 1,2,3 will be masterpieces compared to every new SW disney movie to come.

no more fox fanfare, no more lucafilm logo, no more darkness, more ewoks, more jar jar ear Mickey, and more princess leia SWHS songs...

People have seriously burned their Star Wars stuff? Kind of a selfish act. Not to mention the toxins released into the air. ;)

I think in a few more years, the head CGI used on Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy will be seamless. We'll probably be inundated with movies starring dead actors though. And "live" Elvis concerts.

They'll probably just recast everyone. I can see it now, a new movie every few years far surpassing episodes 7, 8, 9. Star Wars will become like the James Bond franchise, a new actor playing Luke every few films.

This sounds crazy, but it may be useful in some circumstances.

It'd be much better than the cardboard-cutout of Bruce Lee's head that they used to finish The Game of Death. :-)

Honestly, I feel like this is the best possible outcome.

Depending on how long after Jedi this takes place, maybe a Luke Jedi spirit could be played by Hamill. But I don't see Fisher or Ford coming back no matter what.

Seriously?  There's no way anybody could ever make a SW film as bad as the prequels.  Hell, Bruckheimer and Bay could make Ep 7 starring Shia Labeouf as Han Solo and it would look like The Godfather next to the PT.   And of course the lucasfilm logo will still be there.  Why wouldn't it?

If they fixed up the current EU and then put it to bed, they could establish a whole new canon.

They could start with the OT storylines and expand from there. They could recycle the best of the OEU and the stories and elements that had promise but weren't put into full effect.

I don't know about this site. Such extensive altering of the properties is sure to draw attention. Honestly, if I were a Disney legal beagel, I'd be dropping C&Ds on this site like a blizzard.

I hope the real talent around here could conitnue. On an approved secure site if nothing else.

If they throw enough money his way, I'm sure Mark Hamill will be up for playing Luke for a new trilogy (keep an eye on his Twitter account!).

Otherwise, recasting wouldn't be out of the question, especially if there is a large gap in story time between the OT and ST (as there was between the PT and OT).

In Disney I trust.  They are doing a good job with the Avengers movies and I am confident they will do a good job here.  At least the franchise is now out of the hands of George Lucas.

 Spoiler free for the ST

When you say that you wouldnt be able to accept anyone else playing han, luke, leia can i remind you that youre probably like me: OLD

Do you think Disney cares about that demographic? Seriously? Its nothing too do with us anymore. It's basically a reboot for the next generation of kids. We've been told goodbye as an audience.

But Lucas will become Disney's second largest individual shareholder, after the family of Steve Jobs. (One thing nobody I've read seems to have pointed out is that this deal in some way reunites Lucasfilm with its' former computer graphics department, which ended up selling to Disney several years earlier for much more than Lucasfilm itself.)

Lucas' having such a large stake still carries a whole lot of weight, even if it isn't an outright veto (it's still just a small percentage of the company). Now, maybe there are elements within Lucasfilm who have wanted to get the OoT out that Lucas has thusfar vetoed, who will now have some breathing room. I doubt that these people could have gotten promoted in the organization if they felt that way openly though, considering Lucas' attitude though...so we'd have to hope that many there are people in the shadows who want this, or that the suits are willing to override Lucas' wishes. Otherwise...I dunno, I just don't see much of a reason to be hopeful.

The 2011 Blu-ray collection, btw, is billed as 'The Complete Saga'. I sincerely doubt that these talks have been in the works for more than a year, or that Lucas had any kind of story treatment for the third trilogy until very recently (you would have mentioned it in your book!)

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

Lucas specifically mentioned having written treatments for nine films in interviews given for the original making of ESB book.
