I hope beyond hope that we get the theatricals, but I see it going more like instead of focusing on the past and milking it over and over again like Lucas, they will completely ignore the old movies and focus on the ones they own every part of (though I guess Fox really has nothing to do with even SW at this point, right?).

We'll either be catered to, or completely ignored in favor of the new fans. If they can walk a middle ground, I will applaud them.

Here's the deal I made on Twitter:

Here's the deal, #DisneyLucasMerger: you restore & release the original cuts of the Original Trilogy, I will buy them & we will parts ways.

(Cont) If you don't, you get nothing from me. Original Trilogy, or nothing. Got it, #DisneyLucasMerger?

Here's another deal #DisneyLucasMerger: restore the originals, AND hire @adywan & @jamieswb and I will buy EVERYTHING YOU SELL. #longshot

As for fan edits, we can only hope that they will continue to let us function as we have. But who knows, they could buy Adywan too and make them yet another alternate version to milk for more money!

Damn, zombie's next book will be getting a new chapter!  The Fall of the Lucas Empire!

I've suspected some sort of "vote of no confidence" thing was going on behind the scenes at LFL.  The failures of Red Tails, TPM3D, and that SW TV show that never got off the ground must have had some kind of impact.  I'd love to know what went down behind the scenes and maybe zombie can find some people that will talk.

I agree with those that say it can't get worse than where we were yesterday.

I also think a new petition should be done up ASAP.

Right now my biggest concern is the fate of Dark Horse' Star Wars license. What with Disney owning Marvel it would be a tragedy if they were cut out. The Dark Horse team has consistently been releasing the best Star Wars content for years now.

Thats my attitude too, the only way we can be worse off is if disney close down this site. Other than that theres a slim hope oot will be restored so we're better off. Who cares about ep7 after rhe prequels.

There is no reason for Disney to try to take down this site or any fan site that doesn't link to illegal downloads.

If they did the amazing thing and gave us the OUT the forums would still be full of discussion and the community would remain as a monument to patience.

As for the sequels I'm interested, I don't expect anything good anymore but I would watched them.

The really smart thing for Disney to do would be to seek out some of the people on here and use them as a resource. There is clearly a lot of talent on here so It would make more sense to make money from it that spending money shutting it down.

How much does one Adywan cost, exactly?

Right, so there are "possibilities"

Quick youtube tip. If you're on a desktop/laptop and click the "share" button under the video and then expand the options drop down you can get a link that starts the video at a specific time frame...just thought I'd share.

Well, whether or not Episodes 7, 8, and 9 are any good (and they could be crap, but who knows?), I'm SURE that there is a much higher chance of the OUT being released under Disney's watch than Lucas's. We all know Lucas had a hatred for the OUT and adamantly refused to release them, despite all our nagging - I doubt Disney will be as unwilling to release them. So I think this news is the best news I've heard in years!!

What I'd just like to know is... does this mean Princess Leia will be a Disney Princess?

Really just shocked...

I've always been curious about what an Episode VII would like on the big screen, but honestly never expected one to HAPPEN, nor did I think it would be done by Disney.

After watching the quick interview, I like to think that Disney will move many Star Wars adaptations to the big screen than LucasFilm ever envisioned. A new cast of Luke/Leia/Solo, etc is going to be interesting as well.

Fox still has the distribution rights to the existing films, though, right? Doesn't that mean that they, not Disney, would be the ones to continue to send petitions to?

Dark Horse has published Disney titles in the past, and issued some high end collector's merchandise, (statues of characters from the classic Scrooge McDuck comics) so I can't imagine why they would want to shake things up there.

As for fan edits...  You know how sometimes you like to use Star Wars analogies?

You may end up talking about fan edits and this site...before the dark times, before the Empire.

Also well said, timdiggerm.

Can anyone name a Disney or Marvel fan site that's been shut down? I don't know of any.

I can imagine George Lucas torching Skywalker Ranch right after making the deal. "Now nobody will see the originals!"

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I hope Joe Johnston gets a shot at directing a sequel, since he wanted to do a Boba Fett movie.

I'll give my thought on all of this.

When I first read the news, I stared open-mouthed at the screen for about a minute as I read. While I've learned not to take what George Lucas says to heart, I honestly believed that there would never be another live-action film, at least during Lucas's lifetime.

Once my shock subsided enough, I began to think about what this sequel trilogy would be like. I'll admit it, I'm optimistic. Disney owning it doesn't bother me, (I won't be surprised if they end up owning everything one day), since many other Disney-owned projects have turned out great (Tron: Legacy, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pixar, etc. And since the major downfall of the PT was Lucas's poor directing and creative choices, there's a possibility of the new films being the films we wanted with the prequels but never got. There's also the possibility that they could end up being worse, but I truly think it's a bad idea to make assumptions about something before we have any details about it.

As other people have mentioned, there's the possibility that we could get the OOT in good quality. Disney wants to make money, as much as they can, and I'm sure they know there's a demand for the originals to be properly remastered. Lucas refuses to release them because he doesn't consider them the true versions, not because of any money issues. Disney could care less.

I'm keeping an open mind. If this is a Godsend, that's great. If not, oh well, it's not the end of the world.

I hope George will have time to do those small films nobody wants to see...

Honestly, I don't think this announcement changes things in the larger framework. More movies, more products.

If you have someone like Brad Bird directing (and writing) a Star Wars film it could be really interesting, but I guess I'm apathetic toward this because I expected it all along.

Man. I'm out of it for a little while to take a nap, and I wake up to everything I once knew to be upside down.

I don't even know what to think. There's optimism, but there's also wariness at having been screwed before.

This is gonna take some thinking.

For those who care about the future of LucasArts:

Disney CEO Robert Iger briefly discussed Disney's plans for game development using the intellectual properties acquired in the acquisition, saying, "We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console. We'll look opportunistically at console, most likely in licensing rather than publishing, but we think that given the nature of these characters and how well known they are, and the storytelling, that they lend themselves quite nicely, as they've already demonstrated to the other platforms."

Well, it was nice while it lasted.

I'm glad you posted this, as it was a dream of mine to work at Lucasarts. "Now," I thought, "I'll work for Disney I guess..." but after this news... I don't think so.

At the same time, maybe I'll get to work on a Star Wars movie, though.

I don't even know anymore.

One more thing, I have to imagine one of the reasons Lucas made this deal was to "protect the IP". He didn't really pursue lawsuits of fan films and such in the past, but I think the SW fan universe has expanded such that if Lucas wants to keep it all in the family, he knows he's going to have to crack down. But since he's too lazy to spearhead that himself, he's comfortable letting Disney and Kathleen take the reins.

To me, anything Star Wars related...has to come from his mind

Considering I'm the polar opposite - I only follow\own\care about Star Wars that is non-Lucas - this has the potential to be positive.

Abrams got Star Trek back to it's roots, so maybe Disney can give the world something Star Wars other than the twirling colors, small galaxy, children's films that Lucas turned them into in 1983.
