The Ep. 7 project was alive at least going back to June 2012. Lucas was writing the treatment. Now is this treatment based on old material or new? We'll never be told I bet. Most likey hes been lying for years and just never embellished on the treatments.
If Lucas just started the ep. 7 project, that means he did so in order to strengthen the value of Lucasfilm for the Disney sale. He went back on his word (remember when Red Tails came out and he said it would never happen) and created the Ep. 7 project just to give Star Wars a bigger sale value.
Unreal. I've always been a Lucas apologist, even though I've wanted the OOT release and prefer the originals, but this is too much.
For those holding out for the OOT Blu Rays, I guarantee some part of the deal was not altering the special editions in any way unless Lucas approves. And Kathleen Kennedy probably gave him a verbal agreement the originals won't be released.
But who knows, he just sold his legacy to Hollywood which he hated for 30 plus years, anything is possible now.
