LOS ANGELES (AP) — Arnold Schwarzenegger is coming back — as Conan the Barbarian.

Universal Pictures says California’s former governor will star in ‘‘The Legend of Conan,’’ an action film being developed for the actor. Deadline Hollywood was the first to report the news Friday.

The 65-year-old Schwarzenegger starred in two previous films about the mythic hero: 1982’s ‘‘Conan the Barbarian’’ and 1984’s ‘‘Conan the Destroyer.’’

Schwarzenegger told Deadline he loves the character and is ‘‘honored’’ to play him again.end of story marker

I hate to be negative, but this is a very bad idea.  Why would anyone want to pay to see a two hour vanity project by this guy? Schwarzenegger can't act, and he is way too old for this. I'm having flashbacks of Roger Moore as Bond in the 80's. This is going to be truly pathetic with no John Milius involvement. Are they going to make it a retro homage to the original? If so, they can't use CGI. You would need to have the huge grand De Lerentis style sets, puppets, recognizable stable of lovable character actors, etc. It's most likely going to be in 3-D.  They could do the TRON CGI style youth treatment on Arnold, but then why not just make it an animated film with his voice? What do you people think about this one?

I think that Arnold can too act, even if he sometimes hams it up. There are far worse actors than him. He has a unique style, he has an incredible screen presence, he understands character cause he studied psychology at 15. He actually explained in a documentary how he used it to defeat his bodybuilding rivals.

I once too thought he was a bad actor, but now I actually admire the guy. Because you can see how in many of his roles, even if the movie is not exactly top notch, he does try to give a good performance.

Too old? Maybe. So I won't say I think this project is a good idea.

He could simply being playing old King Conan, (as glimpsed in the other films) telling a story in flashback?

We just had a Conan movie last year, not from Universal, so the rights must have lapsed, or Universal still has sequel dibs.

Mako's character will be sorely missed either way.

Thanks for the comments.

I understand that they could use the older King Conan story line based on the original story as written by the creator. No matter what I like or dislike about the idea, it's going to happen, and I will most likely see it at some point.

I just hope they are not trying to mimic the other Arnold films from the 80's to the point of it just turning out to be an uncomfortable parody. All they have is Arnold. The creative team of the original film most likely will not be involved, so I just don't get the marketing angel.

You know how in Superman Returns, the film makers used some of the retro old school Donner era film production elements, changed some locations (The Daily Planet) to fit in more with the comic style, and yet had a modern movie style at the same time? That did not work too well, and that is what I am afraid will happen with this Conan film.  It would be nice if this film would use traditional 1980's era production tools and methods.   There are a few old model makers out there that I personally know that would love the work.

I don't know ... he's been typecast - albeit willingly - into roles that aren't very meaty in a thespianic sense. Were he to branch out and take on more dramatic, less action-oriented roles, who can really say how he'd fare?

That aside ... I'd rather Ahnold wait a few decades before making another Conan film. Conan the Octogenerian has a nice ring to it, don't you think? =P

“The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make… It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he’ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.”

This movie picks up Conan where Arnold is now in his life, and we will be able to use the fact that he has aged in this story. I love the property of Conan so much that I wouldn’t touch it unless we came up with something worthy. We think this is a worthy successor to the original film. Think of this as Conan’s Unforgiven.

He good enough to play Conan in the first two movies, I don't see why he couldn't play an older Conan.

So is Arnold going to be replaying every role he's done?

My personal hope would be a return to John Kimball in Kindergarten Cop 2: Held Back.

I read Conan Of The Isles some years back, and Conan was about 65 years old in that adventure.

The younger cast members of the original film should be about half way through graduate school by now.

I read somewhere that's there's plans for him to star in a Terminator remake/reboot. Now, if the plan's to yet again reprise the role of the cyborg, then that's a really bad idea.

A few years ago the proposed plan was to have Arnold and Robert Patrick play genetic/stem cell scientists who engineer younger versions of themselves. It's actually a decent idea but I'm sure the Hollywood execution would be terrible.

They were pushing it with T2. The whole point of the flesh Terminators was that they could fool the resistance and infiltrate their bases to eradicate them. How is that supposed to work if entire production lines are identical?

It would have worked better if they established that Skynet periodically abducts survivors and replaces them with cybernetic doubles. A sort of post-apocalyptic take on the Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
