i'm not being flippant, but the laserdiscs look appreciably better than any dvd bootleg i've seen. don't get me wrong, i enjoy the "tr47 set" and watch it frequently, and i grant that it's the best transfer to dvd-r i've yet to see, but they don't hold a candle to the laserdiscs on my system. this is using a new-ish 36 inch toshiba TV...not even flat screen and not HD. and then, when i compare stills on my computer with a capture card, the resolution is several factors better on the lasers (unless you're talking about the '89 non-THX version of the lasers, then they're about comparable). in short, the THX lasers are better, hands down, but if one wants the best available on dvd-r, i'd go with the TR47s.
as a side note, if anyone is in the market for a laserdisc player, i would recommmend the LD-V8000 unit. it is the best mass produced industrial player ever built, and they can be found relatively cheaply. the video on this unit is absolutely gorgeous. they also will last forever. check this link...
