If the classics were released...

If the original (and I mean ORIGINAL) trilogy was released on DVD, would you still buy the SE's? You know it might sound blasfemy, but if both versions were released I would buy the SE's first, mostly because I've seen the original ones before, and I would be curious about the changes. I would later buy the original ones, maybe 1 or 2 months later.

Hell yeah I would. Then again I doubt the question was directed at me so whatever.

Sure, I would be curious as to what other changes were being made. I would definitely buy the original theatrical ones first, though.

The O-OT is all I want, and I'm not the least bit curious about the SE changes.

Well, since I'm not buying the new versions or the SEs in a situation where the O-OTs will not be coming out, dunno why I would if they were.

Might rent the SE, but that would be about it, unless I saw it for a good deal on eBay or Half.com

The novelty of the Special Editions wore off long ago for me. There really would be no need to purchase these DVDs for me were they for sale alongside the original theatrical versions of these films.

It was adressed to everyone here...

You see, if the original ones were also released, I'd think "ok, I can relax now, the original ones are for sale... yet I own them on oan scan VHS and I've seen them so much... I'll just buy the 2004 SEs, because I want to, and in a few months I'll get the original ones. no need for it now..."

But NO! Georgie Lucas here wants to screw with my mind! I can't watch the original THX-1138, I never will thanks to him, and I can't own both the original and the SE versions, at least not legally.

Since I, personally, would be happy with a widescreen VHS copy;and given the fact that I all but destroyed dad's copies of the SE(I'm not proud of it, but he knew how I felt at the time)? No, there's absolutely, positively, no way that I'll purchase this DVD set, nor accept them as gifts. Strike that. The only way I could possibly justify having them, when I dispise them, and everything they stand for, would be to satisfy a completest urge if my Star Wars collection were to ever surpass Steven Sansweet's. They would occupy a "Hall of Shame" along with all the other SE stuff I got at the time(a few store displays my father grabbed, etc. I wouldn't touch the SE toys for my otherwise complete PotF collection). Given that, and the fact that I never rebuy without reason, even an O-OT release would be purchased more as a "give my tapes a break", and "Prove Lucas' revisionest history wrong" kind of thing. It makes a SE purchase even less likely.

Wow you gotta a point there.

I'd pick up the SE's if the OT were also available. Curiousity and the completest in me would demand it. Whether I would *like* the SE's is another matter entirely. As a film buff in general though, it's always interesting to see the different paths films can take. I have the Criterion box of "Brazil" with both the directors cut and the Studio cut of the film, and the difference is shocking. Same holds true for the Directors cut vs the Theatrical cut of Blade Runner. As a study in film history, the SE's would be an interesting case study, and there's just no way I could resist owning both. To my mind, Lucas can mess around with the films as much as he likes, just as long as the OT remains available. That's the only thing I want.

damn now that i think about it...
im not sure if i would buy them anymore...

i mean i want to so i can see how the movies have changed... (or been tampered with) but at the same time i know i would never watch them...
so why waste the $50 on them....

hrm...
i think it would have to come down to that point for me to make a decision...

I would buy the classics in a heartbeat... I am still in two minds about whether to buy the DVD's in September or not. I probably will, just out of curiosity. Whilst there is a certain "novely factor" in seeing the various changes, I personally found that the novelty wore off VERY quickly with the SE's, and I went back to watching the originals again.

What I would find really interesting is how many of the people on these boards have actually seen the "Original" versions of these films. When I say original I mean in the theaters during the original theatrical runs. Back when Star Wars was just Star Wars not Episode 4. He's been making changes since 1977.

I did. Back in London, The Odeon Leicester Square with my uncle. Fell asleep coz I thought it was boring. As soon as it came to my town I watched it about 6 times!

If both were released as a three-disc, double-sided, barebones release I would, because it would cost too much otherwise. If I had to choose between an SE and OT release, I'd pick the widescreen OT release definitely.

Granted, the changes made back in 77 were of a much less conspicuous or important nature. Adding the subtitle "Episode IV: A New Hope" is hardly on par with having greedo shoot first, adding cgi song/dance numbers, or any of the SE changes. The whole elitist attitude about who's seen the "original" Star Wars is kinda crappy I think. If you saw Star Wars in the theater before 1997, or on video, laserdisc, CED, what have you, then you saw the original Star Wars in my books, regardless of if some percentage saw a version without the episode subtitle, or some saw a print with a slightly different audio track.

It's not a matter of having an elitist attitude, it's very simply stating that Lucas has been changing these films since the very begining. The language on the tractor beam, C3PO's line that is either in or out depending on which version you see. He has tweeked with these for almost 30 years and sadly will continue to do so. I just find the rants humoruous escpecially when they come from people who weren't even alive when Jedi was released.

Because, as you know no one born after Jedi can appreciate filmmaking/history? I will never buy the SE's.

semi good point... until the last sentence...
funny how you have no details... afraid we'd notice you weren't born before jedi either?

and the numerous spelling errors definatly brings to mind someone i know very well...

Not that it really makes a world of difference to me but my DOB is 4/11/76. I've said in previous post that while I have no recollection of Star Wars in the theaters the first time, I vividly remember both Empire And Jedi. My whole point was that the only truly original versions of these films where the original theatrical runs, because I'm sure there were alterations made with each video release.
