I agree that it's a good idea on how to end the trilogy. However, my opinion is that by that time Star Wars had already become a global cultural phenomena, especially among children. If ROTJ were to have ended the way Mr. Kurtz suggested, it might probably have left thousands of depressed or emotionally disturbed kids, haha.
So, in the larger context the decision to have a happy ending was best for all. Of course, as most/all of us agree, the way Mr. Lucas chose to create that happy ending to the trilogy should have been done a lot better...
