I hope Lucas doesn't spoil it for them by abseiling in and running off with the print.
I would like to see that. I'm too young to have seen the original version in theaters. I have them on VHS, though. And a VCR that still works.

Are you not familiar with the "GOUT", or any of the fan preservations derived from it?

No I'm not familiar with "GOUT". I stay away from anything fans have done with the films if that's what this is.
GOUT (George's Original Unaltered Trilogy) refers to the shoddy official DVD release of the pre-1997 versions.
Harmy's reconstructions are really worth the effort getting hold of as they are the nearest thing to a proper presentation I've seen.
Oh, okay. The VHS OT I own was bought from a video store going out of business. The picture and sound quality on them is bad, but I still watch them. I olso own the SE on dvd and the complete saga on blu-ray.
You've got some catching up to do! The "GOUT" is the one official DVD release that is pretty much identical to your VHS, only better quality. The DarkJedi version corrects many of the digital artifacts on the GOUT combined with a very high quality upscale. And Harmy's preservation is a full HD recreation of the original cuts using a variety of sources and difficult recompositing. Neither is a "fan edit". If you love the original films, you owe it to yourself to check these out. There are threads in the "preservation" section of the forum.
I don't care much for "fan edits" either. But the preservation efforts are pretty much what this forum is all about - preserving the originals. And if George won't do it, we will!

Thanks for clearing that up. I'll definitely check it out.
Yes, most projects in the "Star Wars Preservations and Other Fan Projects" subforum are pure un-edited Star Wars, although they're put together by fans, not Lucas. Don't let that dissuade you. There's a difference between a fan edit and a fan preservation.
But more importantly, WAS THE ORIGINAL CUT SHOWN IN WALES?
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?
Awesome !
Can't find any news for this showing yet.

No me neither. I'm amazed we have no Welsh members on site to give us the lowdown.
Oh hang on, just found this :-)

Cool, as they didn't show it for free there's a risk they got in trouble for it, hope it went ok.

IMO Harmy's recreation fall somewhere in the fan-edit territory, as it contains After Effects compositing done by Harmy and leave some SE compositing in there, technically a new version of the film takes shape. I applaud his efforts and know that calling it a fan-edit is downplaying his work and intent, but I also feel that it's important that we draw the lines correctly of what is original and what is not.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

I think the best way to describe Harmy's is a reconstruction of the Original.
The DeSpecializing term works, it lets you know the intent and potential drawbacks. (look at all the things we still are finding changed in 97) Not sure when in general conversation the term, DeSpecialized, got dropped and replaced with Harmy's preservation. Maybe as he transitioned from Partially to what it is now, people realized the scope and dedication and moved the title from DeSpecialized to the man himself.
Sent an e-mail to the theater, see if anything returns.
I like to consider Harmy's work a preservation. Because although in many cases he is rebuilding elements rather than cleaning original ones, to me the end result looks more like what I saw in the theater in 1977 than any other project. I know most people saw a grainy, dirty, overplayed film, or a fuzzy VHS tape on a small screen, but what appeared in May and June of 1977 was clean, sharp, and ultra hi def. Harmy's version does the best job of preserving that original 1977 opening day viewing experience.

So sad that they were charging money for it....maybe they aren't as educated when it comes to these prints and what could get them closed down.....THIS is why FAN preservation has become so important...and necessary. It has the biggest and best impact for ALL fans....free of charge.

Something weird with the forum, ignore above post (can't enter any text).
Wanted to just jibe:
"News just in, George Lucas destroys Welsh cinema with nothing more than a hammer"
Never found any feedback on this, I mailed the theater too to no avail.
Me neither. I just can't find anything at all about this showing.
Any news?
A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.
I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!
