Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released) — Page 29

Great news! I think that the one major thing that could be improved are the colors and the crushed blacks. With PSB and the yet to be released Negative1 project, we have pretty good sources for the original theatrical colors.

But it's the detail in the blacks that I hope you can bring back. In SW 2.0 I was amazed by the difference in the Jawa vehicle.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Oh and I'll have to pull out the disc and watch it again, but I remember feeling the mattes of the scenes on the platform after the millenium falcon lands on bespin could be improved. I'll watch it tonight to be more precise.

But Empire was pretty good already. I guess it helps that it was the most untouched of the three films.

Looking forward to Empire 2.0!!

The only thing that bothered me were the lightsaber halos that were mentioned already.

But with the better source material and improved Harmy-powers, I have great faith in the boy that this won't be an issue in 2.0

The look of the sabers is the only reason that Adywan's Theatrical Reconstruction is my preferred version of Empire rather than DeEd 1.0

I'm hoping we're able to give the credits the same treatment they got in SW 2.0.

Can't wait...

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Would it be to hard to return the color to Lukes face from the frostbite? That shot of Han finding Luke Part of the Tauntaun's leg is missing
The engines of the star destroy but with the ship would be cool. I imagine that shot of the Probot flying away with at smoke might a bit stuff.

looking for HDTV of the  Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

Hot diggity! super excited to hear you're already preparing to get started on this! I figured you'd be taking a well deserved break after the first 2.0.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it somewhere on this site before, but there's a shot of the star destroyer fleet where one of the star destroyers on the left had been repositioned (the nose was pointed more up than it was originally). But more importantly, the middle of this same ship was essentially invisible! Not sure if it was a result of the crushed blacks or the recompositing for the SE or something else. Anyway, I'll try to post screenshots later.

OK, I'd like to revive this thread, since I want to start working on v2.0 next month.

If you guys have any suggestions about what could be improved over v1.0, now is the time to start discussing them :-)

we're not going to be done with our 35mm for quite some

time.

however, if you want, we can try to put together

a preview of our colors in a manner

like mike did for you, with star wars. probably in

uncompressed screenshots or something similar.

let me know, and we'll work something out. it

could be useful for some parts.

Sounds great, thanks. Although, I must say that your version unfortunately cannot be considered a perfectly trustworthy color reference, since it's color corrected from a faded print. It would definitely still be a big help though!

apparently there were LPP prints out there of empire.

however, i don't know if anyone's ever come

across one. supposedly there were some sightings

on the 35mm collectors forum. but nothing came out

of it. anyways, it's not meant to be an absolute reference,

but it might be a guide to aid your own color choices.

It's actually the most tinkered with film of the bunch in terms of how many altered shots there are, it just happens to be much more subtle tweaks than the other two.

And in terms of technical aspects of the 2004 transfers, the ESB is definitely even more problematic than Star Wars.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Tell me about it. Though I doubt the actual number of altered shots would be more than SW. But yeah, there are quite a few more than what was undone in v1.0 and I intend to give it the same level of despecialization as SW v2.0 this time around.

Give me a PM Harmy if there's any composites you wish to restore where you feel the GOUT or Puggo's 16mm isn't enough, the LD-caps I have might be useful with some clean up in some shots, you never know.

And I really need to get off my ass and watch your Star Wars, a friend of mine came to me a few days ago and told me he had found this fantastic recreation of SW on the web and I wondered what he talked about. ;) Keep up the great work Harmy! :)

Trust me. It's the comparison freak you're talking to.

Yeah, those numbers are quite telling. Are they based on 005's current list? I have pointed out quite a few that's not yet been added. EDIT: noticed that it's based on your spreadsheet.

Well I'll be...

I stand corrected. The proof is in the pudding.

I have to say, I'm actually a bit stunned at the relatively low amount of shot changes in Jedi. It seems like a completely different film nowadays.

(inner voice: Perhaps that is due to the fact that a lot of the changes weren't merely recomposites, but gigantic annoying changes, like Jedi Rocks, flirting Boba, blinking Ewoks, Anakin ghost head and crappy Jabba CGI doors?)

Spreadsheet is about 1-3 months behind the changes thread's findings.  But for all three movies, don't think it's an additional +10.

Are they based on 005's current list?

Yes, one of the columns of data are the descriptions found in the doubleofive picasa collection.  Have figured out a way to process the spreadsheet and auto input it into After Effects.  Trying to work out a method to spit out an .srt.

Bias or not, retaining the colors as they once were while tidying them up to coincide with the HD format is for the sake of historical accuracy thanks to that Harmy touch; so long as the final product depicts the authenticity of the best known sources available, I trust in the polish and attention to detail that made SW 2.0 the best version by miles compared to most official ones. Just when it seems like we've reached a cooling down point, leave it to Harmy in bringing us back to the fun of seeing this journey pick up where it left off.

the shot I was talking about seems to be well documented in doubleohfive's google+ gallery of SE changes. Here's a pic:

Yeah. The problem is that I'm not quite sure what would be the best way to fix it.

I'm curious if digging out the crushed blacks like you did with SW 2.0 will make any difference. But my only other idea would be to just replace the "ghost ship" altogether either from the GOUT or maybe the Puggo Strikes Back? I dunno.... You're supposed to be the expert! ;)

Harmy, is the shadow clipping in Empire worse even than Star Wars? That frame looks fucking awful.

Key out the darker parts and fill those with the GOUT. That way you keep the detailed lit parts. Of course you would have to mask out the star background (as they probably won't line up) by hand.
