Speaking as someone with a 'mystical' relationship with Jack Thompson (too long a story to go into here) I'm loathed to cut him out of any film but there is very little of him to work with in AOTC and to be honest (like Terence Stamp before him) he suffers from Lucas' inability to get a performance worthy of the actor so he might have to be replaced.

But yeah.

Either it's Kenobi's dad or other Jedi's dad.

So when Ben comes sniffing around Luke in years to come Owen has some justification for telling him to go run up a shutter and when Shmi dies Anakin can blame the Jedi for not protecting her enough.

Her name has been stricken from the records, he is discouraged from investigating his visions, he is justified in being pissed off.

If you couple that to a mysterious cloaked figure killing his mother's kidnappers you have a more tangible psycho drama going on than Anakin going ape-shit and confessing it all to Padme who responds by marrying him for crying out loud (modern girls).

Currently Owen hardly knows either Padme or Anakin, he seems happy enough to take Luke it doesn't square with the guy we meet later.
