I downloaded raw captures #2 and #3 last night and I was able to repair both with MultiPar. Enjoy!

I'll be uploading raw capture #1 in a little bit.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I'll be uploading the raw audio this weekend. After that, I'm going to start working on rendering the median'd version, a.k.a., Release v1.1!

Can't wait for the audio....I snagged a couple of the raw captures last night. I missed out on the initial uploads so I have not heard any of audio yet. I scanned through the caprture I got and they look great. I skimmed through all of the posts.....but I did not see a definitive conclusion of where this one came from? Has anyone identified it yet?

I dunno how, but my bookmark for this thread got misplaced!  Time to catch up!  I look forward to seeing the next upload!

How's this one coming? :/

All five raw captures have been uploaded. I plan to upload the raw audio soon.

After that, I have to encode the merged-median-of-three to MPEG2 and then sync the audio.

Poll time!

1. Should I shoot for a DVD5 or DVD9?
2. Should I leave the audio as PCM or compress it to AC3?

The DVD is just going to be the instant-play kind.

DVD9 with uncompressed PCM audio please :-)

Author

1. DVD9

2. PCM

If the other options are desired, it would be easy enough for people to make a DVD with AC3 from the DVD9.

agree with the above go with highest quality out of the options

I would vote for

DVD9

AC3

I say no to PCM because you're wasting valuable bitrate for a 70s era mono VHS soundtrack which already has a pretty poor frequency response of roughly 100 Hz to 10 kHz.

You're basically inflating the file size for little to no gain, wasting data that could be used to make a higher rate video encode.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Wow.  Good input.  I'm grabbing some popcorn.  :)

I've decided to go with DVD9 + AC3. The raw audio, of course, will be available on a.b.starwars.

I'm sorry for the long delays! Something life-related seems to get in the way everytime I sit down to get something done.

PS78 is getting a reboot. The five raw captures are available on Usenet (a.b.starwars) if anyone needs/wants them.

I'm going to take three new captures using only the Panasonic AG-1980P and the Panasonic DMR-ES10. I think my capture cards are doing something silly with the AGC, so I don't want to use them.

I'm also looking into getting a copy of the 1983 VHS tape of The Octagon because it has colorbars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHIe1oz4Dtg

I plan to use Moth3r's guide to make the colors of the captures as close as possible to the source.

I'm watching and capturing PS78 right now.

Discovery: Average/Median will destroy the final product. There's simply way too much vertical jitter. Furthermore, the vertical jitter is unpredictable.

I don't want to increase ghosting, so I'm going to shoot for one excellent capture.

Questions? Comments? Concerns?

There is no point in using colorbars from another source, even if it is of similar vintage. Colorbars are only meaningful if they were recorded on the same equipment on the same tape using the same dial settings as were used to dub the main program. In theory, all color bars should be the same, but there is a huge equipment and human error factor from dub to dub.

One good capture would certainly help to prevent the tape from getting worn down. Just make sure all the equipment (and the tape) is 100% good to go first (cleaning, connections, settings)!

The question is: Should I try to stabilize the vertical jumping/jitter?
