i am one of the few people i guess who have watched all the special features on the LOTR EE discs... both...
for the most part they were entertaining... but they both had 1 or 2 features which were just awesome...
one i believe was a day in the life of a hobbit...
its kinda unbelievable what the hobbits had to go through for all three of these damn movies..
to be honest with you if i was offered their job i would have definatly turned it down...
if you watch that feature on the disc you'll understand why...

and about commentaries... i've only ever listened to one...
The Goonies.. haha i was with a girl at the time and we knew we weren't gonna do much watching of the movie... so i told her ahhh what the hell lets check it out...
it wasnt as bad as i thought... esp since they had the entire cast available..
but its not something i would do for all my titles..
hell i havent even seen the SW commentaries

anyone here have a favorite DVD?
mine is A. Gleaming the Cube (to those old school forum members you all know why) and B. Memento Collectors Edition (2 disc) which has the most frusterating menus ever... but also the most original
those of you who have seen it know what im talking about

I have too many DVDs to have a favourite (over 200).

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Criterion's The Rock. No DVD could ever surpass it's quality of transfer.

It also has some good extras too (it's a two disc one)

My favorite dvds are probably the Big Trouble in Little China 2-disc SE and the Criterion Robocop. Also, I have to give credit to both Leon and The Fifth Element which both have remarkably good transfers, in my opinion.

Thanks for the info, bad_karma24. When I asked about superbits, I actually had the Leon version in mind. Now I know to stay away from it! But I might have to check out the superbit Fifth Element. Here I go, buying the same dvds over again.

I, too, love my Criterion Robocop. Damn good disc. If any of you ever have the chance to nab it, I highly suggest it. I also really love my Criterion Chasing Amy. Another fave is the Almost Famous Bootleg Edition.

I got Criterion's Chasing Amy for $20 at B+N!

Not bad when the MSRP is $40!

Not bad at all! I got mine the day it came out because CA is one of my favorite movies of all time. Definitely my fave Kevin Smith film. I only paid US$25 though so it wasn't too bad.

Nope. Wouldn't get around to watching it.

Agreed. Reference video quality. An extremely natural, unfiltered look with about as much detail as the DVD format can provide.

Superbits are all marketing hype. There is nothing technically different about the process Columbia/Sony uses when producing the discs. They just increase the bitrate. There are plenty of high-quality, high-bitrate discs from other studios that blow away most Superbit releases without any lame marketing BS.

I've held off from buying the Mohicns dvd here in UK, dont know about your release but ours was totally Vanilla

Interestingly enough, this movie has a 15 rating in the UK on VHS & DVD, yet on its release it was a PG & was about a minute longer. The extra minute contained MORE scalpings, people having holes blown through them with muskets, the scene where Monroe has his heart cut out was far more graphic & bloody & the end fight with Magua was longer & bloodier!

I think as well when Uncas has his throat slit you actually see it rather than just the blood squirt.

I was quite shocked on seeing LOTM at the cinema way back in 92, I think a lot of people were shocked at how gruesome & bloody it was for what was rated as a childrens film, in fact many patrons left the cinema in disgust, shame really it is an amazing film & I would love to have a version of that on DVD...

Not true. Superbits are unfiltered. Regular releases are. The bit-rate is raised in order to accomodate the new level of detail. Some releases are simply better than others.

Not all SuperBits are unfiltered. The transfers used for The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth were the same as the original releases, only with DTS and higher bitrates. Even then, the DTS track was out of sync.

I'm aware of the DTS problem on Labyrinth.

And we're not talking about transfer... with the exceptions of Desperado and Lawrence of Arabia (and maybe one or two more that I'm not aware of) Superbits use the same transfer as the original. The bit-rate isn't just raised... that would do nothing really. Suberbits are indeed horizontally un-filtered.

i also heard the Superbit of Labyrinth was pretty shabby...
thats why i ended up buying just the regular one for the time being...

Really other than the DTS tracks I don't see much of a reason for the Superbits. On a bigger screen you "MIGHT" notice a very small difference but not worth spending 22+ bux for.

Just my two cents

I notice a good amount of difference on most of them... I'm on a 53" though. It's enough to make it worth the price.

I guess if you want to nick pick you can see some differences but not enough to shell out the extra money for. I'm running a 57" and a 92" and when it comes down to it by the time the Superbits come out the original movie is like 9 bux for a disc.

For me I just can't justify the extra money on something that is only slightly better at best. It's not like the superbits are leaps and bounds over the other discs. However the Lawrence of Arabia and Fifth Element discs were considerable improvement over the older discs.

For me I have to ask is it really important to spend 22+ bux on and better looking version of "Cliffhanger" or "Starship Troopers" when there are VERY good looking version already available for under 10 bux?

Now if the Superbits were a bit cheaper......

Then I would have to buy all of them for the better sound and picture. I could justify the marginal upgrades in picture for a lower price. But for now I’m sticking with the lower priced discs so I can spend my money on stuff I really need super editions of.

Like SHOWGIRLS

Just kidding you need two super editions of SHOWGIRLS.

My Equipment
57” 16:9 HD Toshiba Projection TV (57HX81) or InFocus 7200 (16:9) 92" screen
Pioneer VSX-D810S (Receiver)
Pioneer DV-F727 (DVD Player)
M&K V-1250 THX Subwoofer
Infinity 12” Subwoofer (BU-120)
M&K 550 THX Surround (X2)
M&K LCR-750 THX Front (X2)
M&K 750-THX Center (X2 - one in front and one in rear)
Monster Clean Power Center HTS2500 MKII
^just so you know what i'm compairing my Superbits on. I mostly use the Toshiba TV to be honest (lighting issues).

EDIT SPELLING

Well, to each his own. I'll assume your display is properly calibrated (you'd be surprised how many aren't). I would have to agree on the lack of SuperBits in which there is a difference. I'm quite comfortable with my non-SE Starship Troopers and AFO.

BTW, Showgirls is the "VIP Edition"
