Info: Original 35mm Theatrical Versions of SE Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy 1997-2005

Negative 1 wanted somebody to start a new thread…

I think it would be fascinating to have transfers from 35mm prints of the Star Wars prequels as they appeared on film- especially Episode I from 1999.  Lots of changes were made when it went to DVD.  Episode II also has alternate shots.  Episode III was basically untampered with for DVD, but it was a direct digital file instead of a print.

If all these were preserved (along with 1980 Empire and 1983 Jedi in 35mm which it looks like is going to happen), our work will truly be done- and future generations will be able to watch the original theater versions of the entire Star Wars saga.

1997: Star Wars- A New Hope SE in 35mm in 5.1 and DTS (coloring very different from LD/VHS)

1997: The Empire Strikes Back SE in 35mm in 5.1 and DTS

1997: Return of the Jedi SE in 35mm in 5.1 and DTS

*1999: The Phantom Menace in 35mm (original version- maybe even the premiere version where Darth Maul is in one piece)

2002: Attack of the Clones in 35mm (alternate shots, no added scenes, more filmic look)

2005: Revenge of the Sith in 35mm (alternate transition, more filmic look)

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

obviously somewhere down the line

the 35mm prints need to be tracked down..

they shouldn't be that expensive, and

they'll be in pretty good shape.

however, that's a whole different can

of worms, right? hmmmmmmm..........

This WOULD be the most optimal solution and one I'd love to see come to fruition.  I'd actually be pleased if we could get at least 1 35mm copy of the PT as well....for posterity and historical reference.  I put out some feelers on the 35MM forum in hopes of gaining some info about the SE 35mm.

Wouldn't it be cool if we had our own film vault here?  :)  :)

yeah,

getting the PT on 35mm is also something

i wouldn't mind seeing/getting... who knows?????

again, they are pretty cheap to get also.. and

in good condition.

If we could somehow obtain stuff like this the DTS discs would sync properly and we'd have at least pre-DVD versions of these movies without any changes before moving to the consumer market.

This was posted over @ the 35mm forum:

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 1999 $450. SOLD
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones 2002 $550. SOLD
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith 2005 $600. Still Avail.

Whether these prices are normal or not, I would not know.  All I have in the way of film is a 35mm Scope Trailer for TPM.  I have a 35mm set for the SE Trilogy trailer but it was cut and sold in like 5 frames per strip.  I bought the whole lot but I have no way of scanning them to post as reference.

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

not sure what is causing the ghosting,

maybe something on the scanner settings?

(I was moving this over from the  The 1997 Star Wars Special Edition Trilogy Preservation Standards Thread [Work In Progress  thread but it looks like -1 beat me to it)  :)

I have some strips of the 35mm SE Jedi, about 5 frames per strip.  Here are some scans of some of the frames that might be useful to someone as a reference.  These are  using Silverfast's auto settings, I can post the full raw scans of the entire strips with no correction at all also if anybody wants to see them or thinks they may be useful as a color reference.

yes, I'm pretty sure they're on the film itself, it showed up on multiple scans and isn't on any of the other images.  Maybe something to do with the transfer from the master to this particular print?

I'm guessing the ghosting "could" be fixed?  :)

Well, upon review I think it is, as you guys suggested, an artifact of the scan.  Here is a new scan that is completely uncorrected (besides being made much smaller to fit on the forum).  It's hard to see on this tiny version but the ghosting is still there (you can see it on the left wing of the shuttle) but it is MUCH less noticeable.

(PS picasa web albums are a huge pain to use on the forum.  what site do you guys use to host pics?)

Can you see it here on the left of the wing?  It's hard to see

I use imageshack.us. You don't need an account if you rip the URL(s) out of view source after uploading your image(s).

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I use photobucket.

@ Brooks.....

Maybe I should send you my film strips for scanning....I'm not sure I'll be able to do anything with them any time soon.

How accurate is the scanning software when it comes to the film?

I'm not an expert or anything but it seems to me to be very accurate.  I use silverfast which came with the epson, pretty sophisticated software. I import directly into photoshop.  If you want I'd be happy to scan your film and then send it back to you along with the scans.  I enjoy doing that sort of thing.  I'll pm you :)

well i'll ask cinch about it,

maybe he knows what could

cause that ghosting to appear

on the original film..

i've never noticed it on any

of the prints we've got..

Could it be a misalignment on one of the emulsion layers?

I figure my request may have gotten lost actually.  The conversations are minimal but informative but it doesn't seem very busy.
