This one? dark_jedi's DefCol :
U.S. 1993 Star Wars Trilogy Defintive Collection Box Set cat#0693-84 (CAV format)
With all my talk of incorrect aspect ratio... when I did the correction on the Technidisc I noticed that it almost perfectly match the 2004 DVD for the most part when I resize that transfer to 704x480, I also noticed that the GOUT-print is pretty badly warped, the distortion is worst in the left part of the frame, anyway what's interesting is that I also discovered that the lightsaber shot in Ben's hut in the GOUT transfer is vertically stretched or horizontally squished, it seems to me that they spliced in that part from a different source, probably because of the "split-saber syndrome" in the '93 transfer we talked about earlier in the thread.
Can someone please post this frame:
from the '95 "Faces" transfer, I'm just curious to know if the GOUT source actually match the "Faces" release rather than DC.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Don't own any Face LD myself.
There's dark_jedi's preservation from 2005
However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Thanks D_M! :) Any 4:3 letterbox DC preservations out there? or maybe someone could grab that frame from the actual LD?

Thanks none! I can't see all of them. :( Hmm... if the one that do show up is from the DC LD, then the "split-saber syndrome" was maybe only something the earlier pressings were affected by, I posted this frame from Dr Gonzo's preservation earlier in the thread:
The frame has been resized by imageshack I believe, hence the weird look of it. Anyway, I think he did the early pressing and as can be seen the stain/dirt isn't there, (if he didn't clean it that is).

Only posted one image. It seems images.google.com find similar image autoprocessing is adding those extra box 'images'. Off to the bug thread.

Oh, I see. Thanks for digging up that frame. Does that transfer also show these split saber artifacts caused by excessive DVNR?

I noticed this a few weeks ago while trying to come up with the minimal cropping needed for GOUT. Is this the only scene with this defect?
A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.
I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I actually don't know, I just happened to stumble upon this one as it was one of the parts in the Technidisc transfer that was in need of AR-correction.
Here's a color correction test I did on it a few weeks ago:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/nt80g3
A vast improvement but still not happy with it, might need to go into RGB color space if I'm going to get satisfactory results. Haven't worked on this lately as I'm occupied with THX whenever the time allows it. I think I'll junk the sharpening applied on my test samples for my final encode as I wasn't happy at all with how it looked on my CRT-TV, looks better at first glance but then you realize you've just added a fake sense of detail, looks artificial, at least on my CRT but looks pretty good on my LCD-screen though. I'll however need to get rid of those horrible lobster faces. One thing I find very troublesome with regards to hues and timing is that even if the clips look ok on your calibrated PC monitor, the calibrated TV sometimes show you something different. I recently realized this when going through my settings on the THX 1138 LD. :(
I did however notice that this shot seems vertically stretched in the 2004 DVD:
or should I say it seems squished in the original as the 2004 is a fresh scan from the negative and is likely more accurate, the '97SE source I checked matched the GOUT and Technidisc, haven't investigated this further and I'm not entirely sure about this one yet.

This could use more seeders at myspleen. It's extremely slow going. (usually +/ - 24 kbps) I had every intention of seeding as soon it finished downloading but I might just give it up and wait for v2.
Any progress on v2 btw?
Sorry to hear that, ator. I'm unable to seed this myself as I lost the files in a HD-crash a few months ago. So I can only recommend getting it from usenet or waiting for me to upload the 2nd version.
An improved one should be ready for upload quite soon, but I cannot say exactly when at the moment.

I know this is an old question but does anyone know were i can get a good copy of the 1997 se releases. I downloaded them i 2000 but they are very crappie copys of them. i have the 2004 dvds hate em and the blu-ray versions too. dont much care for them, also i loved the 97 versions have them on vhs both wide screen and full. I really would like them on disk adywans empire strikes back and star wars color corrected versions are stunning. now need to get a hold of rotj then i would be in heaven if someone knows were i can get a hold of the 1997 ses that were scanned in laser disk format. rather short of going me going out and buying a laser disk player and the special editions on disk that would be much appreciated. i have searched the internet high and low and found nothing any help please.

The 97s have this really weird smearing going on though, so everything has motion trails.
It's kind of like watching a 70s soap or something.

Regarding the weird AR scene(s) mentioned earlier: I have a fully-automated method to find these. Would anyone be interested in the results for each of the GOUT DVDs?
The fully-automated method is just a mixture of AviSynth's AutoCrop (modified to set the fopen(3) mode to append) and a Perl script.

You're interested in ROTJ then msycamore probably isn't the one to ask ;-)
Yeah, I'm not a big fan but I do actually own a GOUT-copy of it, albeit not purchased ;)
msthec1, this thread is aimed for the SWE LD which is the '81 re-release version, not the SE LD's. You might want to check this thread instead: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/LeeThorogoods-PAL-LaserDisc-Preservation-Project-97-SE-Finished-95-THX-Finished-97-SE-Uploaded-95-THX-Uploaded-to-the-newsgroup/topic/11824/

Sounds interesting. I'm sure that might come in handy for some if it works.

I'd be interested as well. But not just the results but the process. The TPM releases have various croppings, but would be interested in learning how many of the shots were not uncropped in the 2011 release. Can give it your own thread or don't mind it in the spreadsheet thread as that project will gladly suck up the data.
I took a shot at colour correcting the frame you were working on a while back. I've blown out the whites a tiny bit (for a change!) but I wanted to ask have you had any luck on lifting some of the darkness out of the Technidisc or is it just too embedded?
^ I take it you weren't happy with my tweak? Yes, I've found a satisfying balance by setting the black and white points more accurately.
On an unrelated note I recently found a mint copy of JSC ESB cheap, what was interesting is that it have slightly different framing/cropping compared to Arnie.d's X9-capture on some reels, you have to wonder how many damn pressings did they actually do of all these films. I intend to preserve it at some point, here's a color corrected sample: http://www.sendspace.com/file/nljqnk

The sample looks good. How much color correction did you do? It's fascinating that there's yet another pressing of the JSC ESB.
@msycamore = it's more a case of my mind won't let me put this stuff down. I keep playing with stuff in Gimp and then five minutes after I've done it I think the envelope can be pushed again. Even though my logical brain understands these laserdisc/vhs sources are limited containers for a 35mm print, that much has been filtered out through the transfer, that correcting one range in the picture will throw out something else in the picture (or in the next scene) - I still keep hoping for a miracle tweak, because I want to be able to see Star Wars in a semi-analogue form (meaning retaining some of the special qualities of organic film photography not an over CGI'd form (apologies to those who grew up with the special edition and GL but that's not MY film!!!). I posted my tweak not because I doubt you were working towards the best overall balance for the film (I wouldnt want to watch my tweaks for very long because I always end up creating harsh contrasts and blown out whites just so I can get to a fleshtone I like which lies in the mid range - sacrificing everything for skintone). I post some stuff a) to rally the experts b) to see if anyone knows how to produce the next tweak to gain a new bit of ground. Tweaking is addictive at first because you can see something magically improve but then it becomes diminishing returns of what you can squeeze out. I have a hard time learning theory and tend to learn some things better through repetition and pictures/diagrams. Unfortunately with Star Wars there's no 100% definitive visual example to point to unreservedly say this is the full or near to full cinematic experience... yet (?). I saw the special edition at the cinema in 1997 and I was really disappointed not by the CGI additions but by the cold / modern colours. It felt like a completely other alien film to me. This was more depressing to my world view than the Phantom Menace. Having seen the Senator screening media I then realized I had never even seen the film properly in the first place. What cruelty! :O) I'm hoping a newly finessed laserdisc, vhs or even gout version will give me at least a semi decent semi authentic film experience back!!!
