Do we really need 4k at home? I mean it's not like it's giant screens like in the movie theather. (unless you're really rich) Is the extra detail really noticable on a home sized projection screen?
Note: I don't have much experience with 4K video, so I really have no clue how much better it looks compared to 1080p/2k
Probably not, but the future may bring advancements in technology to make it feasible; e.g., better compression algorithms, more energy-efficient televisions, etc.
If it's cheap and easy (it's not now), then why not?
Edit: Furthermore, consumer demand for "high definition" drives companies (and other institutions) to spend more on R&D. It's a win for society as a whole. (Also, those better compression algorithms for 4K may make our DVD-sized videos much smaller.)
