Why do you choose the version that shows the most information? As illustrated above, that may not always be the directors intent. A Fish Called Wanda is also a perfect example of this.
Tested it myself. Compared several internet widescreen shots with fullscreen shots of my DVD. In all shots with an effect in them like Judgement Day fullscreen appeared to show more on the top and bottom and widescreen showed more on the sides. In all non effect shots I could not find one where widescreen showed anything more on the sides. The widescreen version is a hack job. I always choose whatever version shows most of the movie. Which is normally widescreen. There are exceptions.
