The Forgotten Scenes

Well A couple weeks ago I found a 2 DVD and a VCD set on the UK ebay. I have always been fascinated by the lost footage, especially the famed lost cut of the original.

DVD 1 - The Complete Archives - This has the Making of Star Wars Documentary, the Original Theatrical Trailers, Classic Creatures, and A Flight through Asteroids - A stroryboard comparison.

DVD 2 - The forgotten scenes - This is what I was looking for, kind of. It is disappointing, certainly not good versions of the scenes but it has a number and mostly it is pictures, in a slideshow format. But they are in order and gives you an expalnation for the group of pictures and some video you might see. Once the idea of having footage to cut back into a new edit was gone, I enjoyed it. Its at least worth a once or twice through. It has pictures for the Ep. 5 and 6 as well.

The VCD - A Long Time Ago - Interestingly this was the most compelling of all of them. There was a rough cut of footage, storyboard animation, and drawings all from the movies that show the celebration scene in its extended glory from ROTJ as GL wanted it, I guess. Not sure how long ago this was spliced, but it looks old (pre-Naboo?). Further, it shows the screentests, edited in with the deleted scenes in an order that makes sense storywise, explaining some of the missing scenes. Now the screentests are with a variety of actors and in bad shape, but interesting nonetheless.

Lastly, I made a CD of the clips I pulled from T-Bonz site of deleted scenes and lost trailers for Quicktime/WMA.

So, Alas I tried, its not what I hoped for, but not a total loss either. I will pass this stuff along to Rikter and MagnoliaFan for their perusal to see if they can use it for anything. I dont have a DVD- burner, so Rikter I will send you the discs and you can copy them and pass them along to magnolia for me.

Thought you guys may be interested. They may be able to rework these and add some of what comes out on the new box set to make something interesting. Thought I'd let you all know. And please don't spend the 40 bucks on this...I did that, they'll use it for something if they can, and maybe let the rest of you know.

BTW, the deleted scenes are the
1. cantina scene, fully, extended with extra creatures, jenny (hans's girlfriend) and the bartering on the MF, etc.
2. The two Biggs scenes one where looks runs in the bar and they all go out and look at the sky, the second with Biggs telling him about the rebellion
3. There is a scene where luke running through town runs under a creature on stilts legs
4. The scene outside of the MF where they go look around
5. The scene at the begining where luke is looking at the sky, his robot breaks down and he gets in the landspeeder
6. A scene with Biggs where the pilots are getting prepped on the death star
7. a scene with at home with "mom"
I think if memory serves...
All are very sketchy looking, but still interesting.

Cool. Magnolia asked that if I get anything good to pass it along, I know its not what he or I hoped for exactly, but I know he'd like to see it. So I appreciate you taking first crack at doing something with it. Thanks, bro.

I'll check it out and see what I can do...
Hell, I found a still photo from a cut shot in Jedi that I actually found a way to reincorporate into the film, so who knows. Anything is possible.

I had been infuriatingly held up all week by software issues with my computer.
My friend kept insisting I updae a bunch of software on my mac and when I did, it killed all of my mpeg-2 exporting capabilities!!!
(cue heart failure)

I finally got it up and running again, differently but likely better, about 2 minutes ago.

That's awesome magnolia. You know, I think it'd be cool to have a version using the screentests, the choppy lost cuts, pictures, storyboards with the film spliced in order. Though it wouldn't be awesome to watch over and over and certainly not a theatrical pleasure...it would clarify what the orginal story was and some of what we've lost over time. Mark Hamill, still wants those intro scenes with him looking through the binoculars and then the two scenes with Biggs cut back in. It may never happen, but I'd love to hear and see it some order of the original script even if it looks crappy.

It might be due to language barrier, but... I didn't quite understand what's on that disc, Obi-wonton...
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

The VCD I was talking about...

The first scene is cut and splice to make what was supposed to be the celebration scene at the end of ROTJ (using a variety of sources). Not pretty mind you, but interesting (though of course now we'll get it for real in the new box set anyway, but it may differ to the one now).

Same with the next part which is an intro which is hugely missing in the cut of A new Hope we've seen, using bad deleted footage, screentests etc. in a way that makes it interesting to see (if even in a shady way) and hear what we missed and think about they way it was originally intended from scripts.

I've just bought this DVD set (although it has yet to arrive) and I was wondering if there's anything on TR-47's 7 disc set that's worth paying the extra $15 for that I don't get with this one.

Here's a complete list, but I don't know for sure what's what.

Can you help me?

Here's TR-47's set:

Disc 1 - Star Wars Bonus Material:
-The Making of Star Wars (1977) 50 min.
-SW trailers
-"The Moments We'll Always Remember" (30 sec. The Simpsons promo featuring Bart blowing up the Death Star)
-2 deleted scenes
-Alternate Cantina scene
-3 original audition clips from 1975 featuring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford
-Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia on SNL clip (1978)
-TROOPS (featuring the original "Bad Boys" theme that is not on the Total Movie DVD)
-"That 70's Show" Star Wars episode

Disc 2 - The Empire Strikes Back Bonus Material:
-SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 50 min.
-TESB trailers
-Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, and Billie Dee Williams interviews from 1980
-Underoos TV Commercial featuring Boba Fett 30 sec.
-THX demonstration short, "WOW!"
-THX sound editing demonstration short, "Soundtrack!"

Disc 3 - Return of the Jedi Bonus Material:
-Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi (1983) 50 min.
-From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga (1983) 65 min.
-ROTJ Trailers (including "Revenge of the Jedi")

Is it worth getting ontop of this "Forgotten Scenes" set, or should I save myself $15?

Thanks for any advice!!

- John
